Having just returned from studying abroad, she received an offer from Northcrest. She didn’t even bother stopping by Seastone City–the plane touched down straight in Northcrest.
When Edith found out her cousin was coming home, and not just anywhere, but to Northcrest, she was beside herself with excitement.
These past few years with the Vance family, Edith hadn’t made many friends, nor had she worked outside the house. Her social circle was tiny; sometimes, she didn’t even have a confidante to talk to.
In a flurry, she packed up and hurried down to the Hawksley family
garage.
She had a driver’s license. Back at the Vance family estate, she’d
occasionally taken Beckett’s car out for a spin.
But Beckett never liked her drawing attention, so outings were rare, and chances to drive even rarer.
Now, facing the Hawksley garage–lined wall to wall with gleaming sports cars–Edith felt a little intimidated.
She decided to call Justin.
He picked up after three rings.
After all, these were Justin’s cars. Edith felt she should at least ask, “Justin, is it all right if I take one of the cars from the garage?”
“Of course,” Justin replied without hesitation.
Edith smiled to herself, half–expecting him to ask another question.
But after a long silence, Justin didn’t say another word.
Finally, Edith couldn’t help but ask, “Aren’t you going to ask where I’m driving to?”
There was a brief, surprised pause on the other end before Justin

answered, “Mrs. Hawksley, you’re free to go wherever you like. If I
insisted on knowing every detail, wouldn’t that make me unbearably controlling?”
He had a point.
Edith agreed with him, but given how little they really knew each other, she couldn’t help wondering if this was just a polite way to say he wasn’t
interested.
Maybe he was just too busy to care about her daily routine.
Either way, it saved her some hassle.
Latonia, seeing Edith about to head out, hurried over and led her to the display case by the door where the car keys were kept.
Edith surveyed the neat rows of elegant keys, feeling overwhelmed.
She had no idea which one to choose.
Rumor had it that the Sumner family was full of politicians and old money, but in truth, Kearney lived modestly. The Sumner family’s days were plain and simple; Edith had never been around this many luxury cars before.
Latonia noticed her dilemma and smiled, offering a suggestion. “Mrs. Hawksley, since you’re picking up your cousin, why not take this one?”
She handed over a Porsche key. “It’s bright and stylish, makes a good impression, and it’s safe. Perfect for two people.”
Edith didn’t overthink it. She took the key and headed out.

Hawksley Tower Headquarters.
Justin sat in his corner office on the top floor, gazing across at Northcrest Tower. He squinted, watching as Henson–making far too much noise
with his tea–slurped and clattered in the chair opposite.
“Could you be any louder?” Justin said, exasperated.

With a huff, Henson set his teacup down and stopped drinking altogether. Honestly, having to watch Justin’s moods just for a cup of tea was infuriating.
He’d come to Hawksley Group today to discuss an Al partnership and, if he was being honest, to see if Justin was actually coming into the office these days.
He’d figured that, having just brought home his much–anticipated bride, Justin would be glued to the Hawksley estate.
Who would’ve thought the guy was still a workaholic?
Henson snorted, “What, did you find out married life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be? Is that why you’re back at the office already, working like your honeymoon never happened?”
