Chapter 82 Fifth Portal Surge (Sam POV)
Chapter 82 Fifth Portal Surge (Sam POV)
The fifth portal tears open at Pike Place Market thirty-seven minutes before midnight, and the reformed demon I've been trusting all week is the one who opened it, the one supposing to be dead also.
"Zephyr, what are you doing?" I stare at the hellhound who saved us in the underground tunnels, who warned us about Asmodai's plans, who died protecting us from demonic retaliation. Except he's not dead. He's standing at the center of a summoning circle carved into the cobblestones, his collar of solidified moonlight pulsing with energy that feeds directly into the portal. "You're supposed to be..."
"Dead?" Zephyr's voice carries harmonics that didn't exist before. "Sam, I was never reformed. Never defected. I was Asmodai's plant from the beginning. My 'death' in the underground was theater. My warnings about the ritual were carefully crafted truths designed to make you trust me. And now..." He gestures to the expanding portal. "Now I've fulfilled my actual purpose. Opening the fifth gateway directly at your staging area. Collapsing your defensive perimeter from the inside."
Demons pour through the portal. Not the lesser ones we've been fighting all night but major entities, warriors with armor made of shadow, mages channeling fire that burns across dimensions, hunters with claws that can tear through blessed steel.
"All units, fall back!" Kieran is already moving, knife drawn. "Lord Ash, form defensive line! Raziel, ward the civilians! Sam..."
"I'm handling Zephyr." My corruption is at ninety point two percent. The artifact burns against my chest. And something else is awakening, something I've been suppressing since the pocket dimension. "Kieran, clear the area around the portal. I'm going to try something."
"Try what?" But Kieran is already herding civilians away from the expanding gateway.
I don't answer. Don't explain. Just focus on the feeling I had in the pocket dimension, the moment when my Nephilim nature found balance instead of war. When angel and demon stopped fighting for dominance and started working together.
The artifact responds. Golden light mixes with shadow energy, creating something that's neither holy nor infernal but both simultaneously.
"Impressive." Zephyr circles me, his hellhound form growing larger. "Sam, you're learning to channel your hybrid nature properly. But you're too late. The portal is open. The demons are through. And Asmodai himself is preparing to manifest now that you've conveniently destroyed all six artifact fragments and positioned yourself exactly where he needs you."
"The fragments." I remember, we scattered them during the battle at the compound. "Zephyr, you're saying the fragments are still important? Even destroyed?"
"Destroyed in physical reality." Zephyr's teeth are too sharp, too numerous. "But they exist across dimensions, Sam. And their destruction in this realm just made them accessible in others. Asmodai has been collecting the scattered spiritual essence of each fragment you destroyed. By midnight, he'll have reassembled them in the demon realm. And when you activate your artifact during the ritual, you'll create a resonance bridge that pulls those reassembled fragments back through, completing Sariel's original design."
"So destroying the fragments was the trap." I process this with the cold logic that ninety percent corruption provides. "Every action I took to stop the invasion was actually enabling it."
"Exactly." Zephyr lunges.
I don't dodge. Don't block. Just channel power through the artifact and let my Nephilim nature do what it's been trying to do for three years.
Wings erupt from my back.
Not metaphorical. Not spiritual. Physical wings made of golden fire and shadow energy, spanning twelve feet from tip to tip, burning with power that makes even major demons hesitate.
"Oh." Zephyr stops mid-lunge. "That's...that's not supposed to happen yet. You're not supposed to achieve full Nephilim manifestation until the ritual begins. How are you..."
"Because I'm not fighting it anymore." The wings feel natural despite being impossible. "Zephyr, I've spent three years suppressing my hybrid nature. Trying to use minimal power to avoid corruption. But that suppression was the corruption. The war between angel and demon inside me was what degraded my humanity. Now that I've let them work together..." I flex the wings experimentally. "Now I'm not fighting myself. I'm just...being what I actually am."
The wings beat once, and I'm airborne. Flying shouldn't be possible, I don't have the body structure, don't have the knowledge, but the wings know what to do even if I don't.
I dive toward Zephyr with speed that turns my body into a weapon.
The hellhound yelps, dodging barely in time. "Sam, this isn't...you're not supposed to be this strong! Not until you activate the artifact! Not until..."
"Until you've positioned me exactly where Asmodai wants me?" I land between Zephyr and the portal, wings spread to block demon reinforcements. "Zephyr, I'm done being manipulated. Done following plans that turn out to be traps. You want this portal? You're going to have to go through me first."
"Gladly." Zephyr's form shifts, growing larger, more demonic. "Sam Drewsbury, you think manifesting wings makes you dangerous? I've been alive for three centuries! I've fought angels and won! You're just a corrupted human playing at being..."
I punch him.
Nephilim strength enhanced by ninety percent corruption and full manifestation turns my fist into a battering ram that sends Zephyr flying backward through three market stalls.
"I'm not playing." The wings fold slightly, preparing for another strike. "Zephyr, you made a tactical error. You revealed your betrayal before I was positioned for the ritual. Before I was vulnerable. Now you're just another demon between me and midnight."
Zephyr staggers upright, blood streaming from his mouth. "You can't close this portal! It's too strong! Too deeply rooted in physical reality! Even with wings, even with full manifestation, you're just one Nephilim against..."
"She's not alone." Kieran appears beside me, knife ready. "Zephyr, you want to fight Sam? You fight both of us."
"The cursed hunter and the corrupted bridge." Zephyr laughs, but there's fear in it now. "What are you going to do? Kill me? I'm already dead, remember? Died in the underground. This is just...spiritual manifestation."
"Then we'll disperse your manifestation." I focus power through the artifact, feeling the wings respond. "Kieran, can you handle the demons coming through the portal while I deal with Zephyr?"
"Can I...Sam, there are fifty demons coming through that portal!" But Kieran is already moving toward them. "Yes. Yes, I can handle fifty demons while you fight a reformed hellhound who's apparently been playing us all week. Why not? What's a little impossible odds between partners?"
He charges the portal. Blessed knife flashing in darkness. Cutting through demons with efficiency born from three centuries of practice.
But I see him stumble. See the curse feedback starting even though he's barely killed three demons. The soul-bond we created to save Lucinda is still active, still connecting us, and through it I feel Kieran's pain.
"Kieran!" I spread my wings, preparing to help. "Hold on, I'm..."
"No!" Kieran kills two more demons despite the curse overwhelming him. "Sam, focus on Zephyr! I can handle this! I just need..."
He collapses. Five simultaneous deaths flooding through his consciousness. Too much. Too fast.
The soul-bond flares. Without thinking, I channel power through it, not to strengthen Kieran but to absorb part of his pain. To take the curse feedback into myself and bear it alongside him.
The deaths hit me. Five demons I didn't kill. Five consciousnesses extinguishing. Five final moments of existence ending in blade and blood.
But I'm ninety percent corrupted. The deaths that would shatter a human mind just wash through my hybrid nature like water through stone. Angel half processes the tragedy. Demon half processes the necessity. And together, they balance the curse feedback into something bearable.
"Sam?" Kieran gasps from where he collapsed. "What did you...how did you..."
"Soul-bond." I keep one wing extended toward the portal, blocking demon reinforcements while simultaneously bearing part of Kieran's curse. "Kieran, I can take some of your pain. Not all of it. But enough that you can keep fighting without being paralyzed by death feedback."
"That's not...you can't just take curse damage like that!" But Kieran is standing again, moving again, killing again. "Sam, the curse was specifically designed to be non-transferable! Cernunnos made sure I'd suffer alone!"
"Cernunnos didn't account for Nephilim with soul-bonds." I'm processing ten deaths now, five from Kieran's continued fighting, five from my own strikes against demons trying to flank us. "Kieran, I can handle this. My hybrid nature processes death differently than human consciousness. Let me carry part of your burden."
"This is insane." But Kieran is fighting more effectively now. Killing without the immediate paralysis that's plagued him all week. "Sam, when this is over, we're having a serious conversation about boundaries and sacrifice and..."
"If we survive, we can have all the conversations you want." I turn my attention back to Zephyr, who's been using our distraction to strengthen the portal. "But right now, I need you functional. Need your three centuries of combat experience helping hold this defensive line. So stop arguing and start fighting."
"Yes ma'am." Kieran actually smiles despite everything. "Sam Drewsbury giving tactical orders while flying on Nephilim wings and absorbing curse damage. You've come a long way from the psychic investigator I met a week ago."
"That psychic investigator is gone." I launch myself at Zephyr with wings propelling me faster than any human should move. "What's left is whatever I'm becoming. And right now, I'm becoming very motivated to make you regret betraying us."
Zephyr tries to dodge. Tries to teleport. But my wings are faster, they fold around him like a cage made of golden fire and shadow energy, trapping him in place.
"Sam, please!" Zephyr's voice cracks. "I didn't want to betray you! Asmodai has my pack! Has my family held hostage in the demon realm! He said if I didn't open the fifth portal, he'd torture them for eternity! I had no choice!"
"There's always a choice." But I hesitate. "Zephyr, if what you're saying is true, if Asmodai is holding your pack hostage..."
"He is." Tears stream down Zephyr's hellhound face. "Sam, I'm three hundred years old. I've been reformed for two centuries. Been trying to resist demonic nature for longer than Kieran's been cursed. But Asmodai found my weakness. Found the one thing I couldn't sacrifice. And he used it to force my cooperation."
The soul-bond flares again. Not with Kieran this time but with something else, the part of me that's still human enough to understand being forced into impossible choices.
"Echo." I reach out through spiritual dimensions. "Can you verify Zephyr's story? Can you see if there's a hellhound pack being held hostage in the demon realm?"
"Checking." Echo's consciousness spreads through dimensional barriers with Marcus helping analyze what she finds. "Sam, he's telling the truth. There are seven hellhounds imprisoned in Asmodai's fortress. They're being tortured. Used as leverage to force Zephyr's cooperation. If he doesn't open the fifth portal, Asmodai kills them all."
"So we're back to impossible choices." I keep the wings caged around Zephyr but don't strike. "Zephyr betrays us or his family dies. We stop Zephyr or demons pour through the portal. No good options."
"Then we create a good option." Kieran appears beside me, somehow still functional despite killing twenty demons in the past five minutes. "Sam, you've got Nephilim wings. You can fly across dimensions. What if you used that ability to rescue Zephyr's pack while simultaneously disrupting the portal from the other side?"
"That's..." I process the suggestion. "That's actually tactically sound. If I can cross into the demon realm, I can free the hostages and destabilize the portal's anchor simultaneously. But Kieran, that means leaving Pike Place Market undefended. Leaving you to coordinate against fifty demons without my support."
"I've been defending against demons for three centuries." Kieran's voice is steady. "I can handle thirty more minutes. Sam, go. Rescue Zephyr's pack. Prove that we're different than Asmodai. That we don't sacrifice innocent beings for tactical advantage."
"Even if it means risking the defensive perimeter?" I need to hear him say it.
"Even then." Kieran meets my eyes. "Sam, you taught me something this week. You taught me that sometimes the tactically sound choice is the wrong choice. That humanity isn't about perfect calculations but about refusing to become the monsters we're fighting. So go. Save Zephyr's pack. I'll hold the line here."
"Kieran..." The emotion is difficult to process at ninety percent corruption, but I feel it anyway. "Thank you. For believing I'm still human enough to make these choices. For trusting me despite knowing I'm barely myself anymore."
"You'll always be yourself." Kieran returns to fighting demons. "Sam Drewsbury, the woman who hunts supernatural killers and somehow makes me believe in humanity again despite three centuries of evidence to the contrary. Now go. Before I change my mind about this insane rescue mission."
I turn to Zephyr. "Where exactly is Asmodai keeping your pack?"
"Northwest tower of his fortress." Zephyr's voice carries desperate hope. "Sam, if you're actually doing this, if you're actually trying to save them...they're in cells three through nine. Seven hellhounds. My family. Please...please don't let this be another manipulation. Please actually save them."
"I'll save them." The wings spread fully. "But Zephyr, you're coming with me. You're going to show me exactly where they are. And if this is another trap, if you're leading me into ambush, I'm going to demonstrate why ninety percent corrupted Nephilim are the most dangerous beings in any realm."
"It's not a trap." Zephyr's collar of solidified moonlight pulses. "Sam, I swear on my pack's lives. This is genuine. Asmodai forced my cooperation through hostages. Help me free them, and I'll help you close this portal properly."
"Then let's go." I grab Zephyr with one hand while the other channels power through the artifact. The wings beat once, twice, and then...
We're flying. Not through physical space but through dimensional barriers. The artifact knows the way, knows how to navigate between realms, and my wings provide the propulsion.
The demon realm materializes around us. It's worse than the pocket dimension,a landscape of perpetual twilight, burning cities, and screaming that never ends.
"Northwest tower." I orient using instincts I didn't know I had. "Zephyr, lead the way."
We fly through Asmodai's territory. Past armies of demons preparing for invasion. Past fortresses built from bones and suffering. Past horrors that would shatter human sanity.
But I'm not fully human anymore. The sights that should traumatize me just get processed and filed away. Tactical intelligence for future reference.
"There!" Zephyr points to a tower that looks like it's made of frozen screams. "Sam, that's where they're holding my pack! But the defenses...there are wards, guards, magical barriers that will alert Asmodai the moment we..."
I don't wait for him to finish. Just fold my wings and dive toward the tower with enough speed to turn entry into a battering ram.
The wards shatter. The guards die before they can raise alarms. The magical barriers collapse under Nephilim power that doesn't care about demonic defenses.
We crash through the tower wall. Land in a corridor lined with cells.
Seven hellhounds look up with eyes that carry centuries of suffering.
"Zephyr?" One of them, older, scarred, probably the pack leader, stares in disbelief. "Brother, you came back? But Asmodai said you abandoned us. Said you chose freedom over family."
"He lied." Zephyr's voice breaks. "I've been his agent for a month. Opening portals. Betraying allies. All to buy time until I could find a way to rescue you. And Sam..." He gestures to me. "Sam is that way. She's a bridge. A weapon. A Nephilim who's choosing to save demons despite having every reason to let us die."
"Not every reason." I start breaking open the cell doors. "Zephyr, your pack didn't choose to serve Asmodai. They're hostages. Innocent victims. And I'm...I'm trying to remember that distinction matters even when I'm ninety percent corrupted and barely capable of processing empathy."
The cells open. Seven hellhounds emerge, weak, traumatized, but alive.
"We need to go." I spread my wings. "Zephyr, can your pack fly? Can they travel across dimensions?"
"Not without anchor." The pack leader limps forward. "Bridge, we're too weak. Too damaged. We need someone to carry us across barriers. Need someone with power to..."
"I'll carry you." The decision is immediate. "All seven of you. My wings are strong enough. But we need to move now before Asmodai realizes what we've done."
I gather the hellhounds with shadow energy that extends from my wings. Create a protective cocoon that holds all seven plus Zephyr.
"Hold on." The wings beat. Once. Twice. Three times.
We're flying back toward physical reality. Toward Pike Place Market. Toward a portal that needs closing and a ritual that needs performing and a world that needs saving.
Behind us, alarms start screaming across Asmodai's fortress.
"He knows." Zephyr's voice is grim. "Sam, Asmodai knows you freed my pack. Knows you crossed into his realm without permission. He's going to retaliate. Going to..."
"Let him retaliate." We burst back through dimensional barriers into physical Seattle. "Zephyr, I just demonstrated that I can invade his fortress, free his hostages, and escape before he can respond. That's tactical intelligence he didn't want me to have. That's power he didn't want me to demonstrate. And now..." We land at Pike Place Market, where Kieran has somehow managed to hold defensive line despite overwhelming odds. "Now he knows exactly how dangerous I've become."
The seven hellhounds collapse onto cobblestones. Weak. Traumatized. But free.
"Sam." Zephyr's voice carries something like worship. "You actually did it. You freed my family. Despite the tactical risk. Despite the time cost. Despite having every reason to prioritize the mission over demon hostages."
"Because the mission includes remembering that not all demons are enemies." I fold my wings. "Zephyr, close the portal. Fulfill your promise. Help us stop Asmodai's invasion."
"I'll do more than close it." Zephyr moves toward the portal with renewed purpose. "Sam, I'll help you hunt the scattered artifact fragments. The spiritual essence that exists across dimensions. If Asmodai has been collecting them in the demon realm, I know where they are. Know how to find them. Know how to prevent him from reassembling them during your ritual."
"Then we have work to do." I check the time, twenty-three minutes until midnight. "Kieran, status report?"
"Forty-seven demons dead. My curse is manageable thanks to you absorbing part of the feedback. Defensive perimeter is holding." Kieran looks at my wings with something like awe. "Sam, you're flying. You're literally flying with Nephilim wings while maintaining enough humanity to rescue demon hostages. That's...that's not how corruption is supposed to work."
"Nothing about tonight is how it's supposed to work." The wings fold against my back, still present but less prominent. "Kieran, we need to hunt six artifact fragments scattered across dimensional space. Need to find them before Asmodai reassembles them in the demon realm. Can you coordinate defensive positioning while Zephyr and I handle fragment recovery?"
"Can I coordinate?" Kieran laughs. "Sam, after watching you invade hell and rescue hellhounds while managing to close a portal and maintain tactical awareness...yes. Yes, I can coordinate defensive positioning. Go. Hunt your fragments. Save the world. I'll hold things together here."
"Thank you." I spread my wings again. "Zephyr, show me where the fragments are. We've got twenty-three minutes to prevent Asmodai from completing Sariel's design."
"Follow me." Zephyr's form shifts, healthier now, stronger, like freeing his pack restored something essential. "Sam, bridge-walker, demon-rescuer, corrupted Nephilim who somehow maintains enough humanity to make impossible choices...you're either going to save the world or destroy it. And honestly? I'm betting on save."
We fly into dimensional space together. Nephilim and reformed demon. Hunting fragments of ancient artifacts while trying to stop an invasion that's been three years in the making.
My wings burn with golden fire and shadow energy. My corruption sits at ninety point two percent. My humanity is barely recognizable.
But I'm still choosing to save demon hostages instead of sacrificing them for tactical advantage.
And maybe...maybe that choice means I'm not as corrupted as the numbers suggest.
