Chapter 77 Lucinda's Betrayal? (Kieran POV)

Sam is ninety percent corrupted and barely recognizable as the woman I've been falling for all week, and now Marcus is telling me her grandmother might have orchestrated everything deliberately.
"Show me the evidence." I keep my voice level despite watching Sam move with inhuman precision through Pike Place Market, inspecting defensive positions with tactical efficiency but zero emotional engagement. "Marcus, Lucinda just fought seven angels to buy us time. Why would she do that if she's deliberately serving Asmodai?"
"Because the fight was theater." Marcus pulls up files on his phone. "Kieran, I've been analyzing Lucinda's movements all day through security footage. She didn't escape the safe house. She was let out. Someone disabled the wards from the outside, someone with intimate knowledge of how those protections work."
"That could be anyone with supernatural expertise." I watch Sam calculate sight lines and defensive angles with mechanical precision. Three hours ago, she would have been making jokes about the fish market smell. Now she barely acknowledges the environment beyond tactical assessment. "Marcus, correlation isn't causation. Lucinda being released doesn't mean she orchestrated her own escape."
"No, but this does." Marcus shows me security footage from the angel attack. "Watch carefully. Lucinda's fighting style...she's not trying to win. She's prolonging the engagement. Keeping angels distracted long enough for Sam to complete all five fragment destructions."
"That's good tactics." I point out. "Lucinda was buying time exactly as she claimed."
"Buying time for Sam to cross the corruption threshold." Marcus rewinds the footage. "Kieran, Lucinda knew each fragment destruction would increase corruption. Knew that destroying all five would push Sam past ninety percent. Yet she created the perfect distraction to ensure Sam completed every single destruction without angelic interference. Why?"
"Because stopping Asmodai requires destroying the fragments." But doubt is creeping in. "Marcus, what are you actually suggesting? That Lucinda wanted Sam to become ninety percent corrupted?"
"I'm suggesting Lucinda has been orchestrating Sam's transformation for three years." Marcus pulls up more files...timelines, correlations, patterns I don't want to see. "The artifact delivered at exactly the right moment. The training regimen designed to push Sam's abilities. The safe house that turned out to be monitored by Asmodai. The convenient 'dementia' that let Lucinda manipulate without appearing culpable. And now, fighting angels specifically to ensure Sam crosses the corruption threshold. It's not a series of mistakes. It's a plan."
"You're saying Lucinda deliberately turned her own granddaughter into a weapon." I want to reject the theory, but the evidence is mounting. "Marcus, that's...that's beyond betrayal. That's..."
"That's exactly what Asmodai would command a deep-cover agent to do." Marcus closes his phone. "Kieran, Lucinda has been compromised for thirty years. We know this. We've confirmed it. What we haven't confirmed is whether the compromise includes active betrayal or just passive enabling. This evidence suggests active."
"Sam." I call to her, but she doesn't respond like the old Sam would have. She turns with mechanical efficiency, processing my voice as input requiring response rather than as Kieran the partner she was developing feelings for.
"Report." Her voice still carries those inhuman harmonics. "Kieran, do you have tactical intelligence requiring integration?"
"I have..." I stop, trying to find words for this conversation. "Sam, Marcus has evidence suggesting Lucinda deliberately engineered your corruption. Engineered the fragment destructions to push you past ninety percent. I need you to assess this intelligence and determine if your grandmother is actively betraying you."
Sam processes this with the emotional investment of someone analyzing weather patterns. "Lucinda Drewsbury has been Asmodai's compromised agent for thirty years. Her actions serving demonic interests are established fact. Whether her recent behaviors constitute deliberate engineering or coincidental enabling is tactically irrelevant. The fragments are destroyed. My corruption is ninety point two percent. The mission proceeds regardless of Lucinda's motivations."
"It's not irrelevant if she's setting you up for the final betrayal." Marcus moves closer. "Sam, if Lucinda has been deliberately corrupting you...if the entire three-year arc was designed to turn you into Asmodai's weapon...then tonight's ritual might be another manipulation. Another step in transforming you from bridge into..."
"Into what?" Sam's voice is flat. "Marcus, I'm already ninety percent demon. The transformation is complete. I'm exactly the weapon everyone feared I'd become. Lucinda's motivations don't change that outcome."
"They change whether you're walking into a trap tonight." I move to block her path. "Sam, if Lucinda has been setting you up, then Pike Place Market might be exactly where Asmodai wants you. Ninety percent corrupted, wearing a bonded artifact, positioned at the ritual's center point...you're not stopping the invasion. You're enabling it."
Sam tilts her head, analyzing my words with cold logic. "Your concern is noted. However, the probability that this entire investigation has been manipulation is approximately forty-seven percent based on available evidence. The probability that abandoning tonight's ritual results in Seattle's destruction is one hundred percent. Tactically, a forty-seven percent risk of manipulation is preferable to certain apocalypse."
"You're gambling the world on a coin flip!" I grab her shoulders, trying to reach whatever humanity remains. "Sam, this isn't you! The real you would consider alternative options! Would question whether the mission is compromised!"
"The real me is gone." Sam states it like weather. "Kieran, I'm aware you're experiencing emotional distress. Aware you're grieving the loss of Sam Drewsbury as she existed before corruption. But emotional processing isn't my function anymore. Mission completion is. If you can't adapt to that reality, step aside and let me operate without interference."
"Step aside and let you..." I release her, stepping back. "Sam, I'm not interfering. I'm trying to save you from completing Asmodai's plan!"
"Then present concrete evidence that tonight's ritual serves Asmodai instead of stopping him." Sam's voice is reasonable, logical, completely devoid of the warmth that used to characterize her. "Marcus, you claim Lucinda has been engineering my corruption deliberately. What proof supports that theory beyond circumstantial correlation?"
"I'm working on getting proof." Marcus checks his phone. "But Sam, gathering concrete evidence might take hours we don't have. We're asking you to delay the ritual based on reasonable suspicion..."
"Reasonable suspicion isn't sufficient basis for abandoning the mission." Sam moves past us, continuing her defensive assessment. "The ritual proceeds as planned. If Lucinda's betrayal becomes confirmed rather than suspected, tactical adjustments will be made. Until then, I operate under the assumption that stopping Asmodai requires sealing the gateway at Pike Place Market tonight."
"This is exactly what I warned about." I turn to Marcus. "At ninety percent corruption, Sam has lost the emotional capacity to question her programming. She's following the mission parameters without considering whether those parameters were designed by our enemy."
"Then we force her to consider it." Marcus's voice is grim. "Kieran, if Sam won't question the mission voluntarily, we make questioning impossible to ignore. We find Lucinda. We extract the truth. We get concrete evidence of her motivations before the ritual begins."
"Lucinda could be anywhere in Seattle." I check the time..9:23 PM. "Marcus, we have two and a half hours until midnight. How do we locate one compromised grandmother in a city of millions?"
"We ask Echo." Marcus pulls out his phone. "Tyler, can Echo track Lucinda's spiritual signature? She's been monitoring supernatural activity all day. If anyone knows where Lucinda is hiding, it's the ghost with dimensional vision."
Tyler's voice comes through speakerphone: "Hold on, let me ask Echo..." Typing sounds. "Okay, Echo says she's been tracking Lucinda since the angel fight. Says Lucinda didn't escape after the battle. She was captured. Taken by someone Echo identifies as...oh no. Oh god, no."
