Chapter 73 No Precedent For Nephilim (Sam POV)

Chapter 73 No Precedent For Nephilim (Sam POV)

"I know." I check the time on my phone...2:47 PM. "Tyler, how's the fragment destruction timeline looking?"
"Aggressive but achievable." Tyler turns his laptop so I can see the schedule. "Five fragments, approximately ninety minutes each, fifteen-minute travel time between locations. You'll finish the last destruction around 10:30 PM. That gives you ninety minutes to reach Pike Place Market, coordinate with fae and angelic forces, and prepare for the midnight ritual."
"And my corruption trajectory?" I ask the question I'm dreading.
"Based on power expenditure at the first fragment..." Tyler pulls up calculations. "Each subsequent destruction will push you approximately point six percent higher. Five destructions means three percent total increase. You'll finish at eighty-nine point eight percent. Almost ninety percent corrupted."
"Ten percent away from complete transformation." I process the numbers. "Tyler, at ninety percent corruption, will I still be...me? Still human enough to make choices?"
"According to Lucinda's notes..." Tyler hesitates. "At ninety percent, most Nephilim report significant personality changes. Increased aggression. Decreased empathy. Stronger connection to demonic impulses. But cognitive function remains intact. You'll still be you, just...harder. Colder. More willing to make ruthless choices."
"So I'll become the weapon everyone's afraid I'll become." I sit heavily in a library chair. "Tyler, will I still care about saving Seattle at ninety percent? Will I still prioritize humanity over demonic power?"
"I don't know." Tyler's honesty is brutal but necessary. "Sam, there's no precedent for Nephilim operating at ninety percent corruption while trying to seal gateways. Every historical case at that level shows the Nephilim either getting executed or fully transforming into demonic servants. You're attempting something unprecedented."
"Then I'd better make it count." I stand, checking weapons. "Marcus, confirm tactical positioning for tonight. Kieran, contact Lord Ash and coordinate with Raziel's angelic team. Tyler, maintain communication with Echo...I need her ghost-vision monitoring everything. If I start acting corrupted, if I start making choices that serve demons instead of humanity, I need someone to tell me immediately."
"I'll tell you." Kieran's voice is firm.
"Thank you." The gratitude is genuine. "Kieran, I'd rather die at your hand than angelic execution. At least...at least you'll make it mean something."
"Stop planning your death and start planning your success." Tyler closes his laptop. "Sam, you've been assuming you'll cross the corruption threshold during fragment destruction. But what if you don't? What if you manage the power expenditure perfectly and finish at exactly eighty-six point nine percent? Then angels can't execute you. You'll have stayed below their threshold while completing the mission."
"That's..." I want to believe it's possible. "Tyler, that requires perfect power control across five fragment destructions while managing combat, travel, and increasing corruption. The margin for error is zero."
"So don't make errors." Tyler's voice carries absolute faith. "Sam, you've been doing impossible things all week. You've survived Marcus's betrayal, Lucinda's compromise, Echo's dissolution, and countless demon attacks. You've learned to balance your Nephilim abilities in a pocket dimension. You've saved fae refugees and exposed angelic spies and coordinated a defensive alliance that shouldn't exist. If anyone can destroy five fragments without crossing the corruption threshold, it's you."
"Tyler's right." Marcus checks his weapon. "Sam, I've watched you operate under impossible pressure for days. You're stronger than you think. Smarter than you give yourself credit for. If perfect power control is what's required to survive tonight, you'll achieve it because failure isn't acceptable."
"No pressure." But I'm smiling slightly. "Okay. Okay, new goal: destroy five fragments while maintaining exactly eighty-six point nine percent corruption. Stay point one percent below the angelic execution threshold. Complete the mission without scheduling my own death. How hard can it be?"
"Extremely hard." Kieran doesn't sugarcoat it. "But hard isn't impossible. Sam, I'll help you monitor your corruption levels between fragments. We'll calibrate power output after each destruction. We'll adapt as needed to keep you below threshold."
"Then let's move." I head toward the library exit. "First fragment is downtown Seattle. Thirty minutes from here. We destroy it, assess corruption impact, adjust strategy for the remaining four. Tyler, maintain communications. Marcus, keep tactical teams ready for rapid deployment. Kieran..." I meet his eyes. "Keep me human. No matter how hard that becomes."
"Always." Kieran follows me out into Seattle's afternoon sunlight. "Sam, I've kept myself human through three hundred years of curse-inflicted death. I can keep you human through five fragment destructions."
We drive toward downtown Seattle in tense silence. My phone buzzes with a message from Echo: Sam, I'm monitoring the angelic team. They're genuinely hoping you succeed. Hoping you stay below corruption threshold. Hoping they don't have to execute you. Angels aren't evil. They're just...inflexible. Following protocols designed to prevent catastrophic threats. If you can stay below eighty-seven percent, they'll let you live. But if you cross that line, they'll kill you without hesitation. No mercy. No exceptions. Just...enforcement.
"I know." I whisper it to my phone screen, knowing Echo will somehow sense the response. "Echo, I'm going to try. Going to fight to stay below threshold. But if I fail...if I cross eighty-seven percent...at least I'll die knowing I tried everything."
Don't die. Echo's text is simple but fierce. Sam, I'm already dead. Rhodes is dead. Kieran is cursed. Your grandmother is compromised. Tyler has sacrificed twelve years. Marcus has been corrupted for thirty-five. We've all paid terrible prices for this mission. Don't let the final price be your life. Fight. Survive. Win.
"I'll try." I set the phone aside as we pull up to the downtown location. "Kieran, let's destroy a fragment without dying. Novel concept for this investigation."
"Revolutionary." But Kieran is smiling as we exit the car. "Sam, after this is over, after we've won and you've survived…remind me to take you somewhere that isn't a supernatural battlefield. Somewhere normal humans go on dates. Coffee shops or movies or…I don't know. Whatever people do when they're not fighting demons."
"A date." I laugh despite everything. "Kieran Braut, are you asking me out?"
"I'm planning for a future where we both survive long enough to have that conversation properly." Kieran draws his knife. "Now focus. Fragment destruction first. Dating later. Priorities."
"Priorities." I touch the artifact, feeling it respond at eighty-six point eight percent. "Let's go prove the angels wrong. Let's destroy five fragments while staying below threshold. Let's show them that some corrupted Nephilim are worth keeping alive."
We head toward the fragment location, and somewhere behind us, six angels watch with celestial fire in their eyes, waiting to see if I'm the exception to their corruption protocols or just another weapon that needs to be eliminated before it destroys the world.
