Chapter 501
Ivy Windsor’s eyes went wide as saucers when she spotted the patrol officer in uniform outside the car window. She frantically slapped Jamison’s arm. “Jamison Ludwig–the, the police!”
He let go instantly, and she retreated to her seat, turning away to hide her face.
The officer was still knocking on the window, so Jamison had no choice but to lower it.
“Sir, may I see your license and registration?” The officer gave a polite salute, though he looked a little embarrassed.
Jamison cleared his throat, quickly fished out his documents, and handed them
over.
He looked a bit awkward himself, but there was an unmistakable gleam of excitement in his eyes.
After a quick check, the officer glanced at the luxury car–clearly out of his league–then returned the documents. “You’re good to go, but you can’t park here. Please move along as soon as possible.” His tone was all business.
“Sorry about that, I’ll leave right away,” Jamison replied.
He took back his paperwork, gave the officer a nod, rolled up the window, and drove off immediately.
Noticing that Ivy looked like she wished she could burrow into her own chest, he chuckled. “You hiding from the world, or trying to be an ostrich?”
Ivy’s face flushed scarlet. “This is all your fault! So embarrassing. I’m never riding with you again!”
He was always so handsy–she couldn’t stop him, and now they’d even attracted the police. What must the officer think?
“Then next time, I’ll take your car,” Dr. Ludwig teased, grinning.
..!” Ivy was speechless.
By the time they reached the university gates, it was already past ten. Jamison suggested, “How about I stay and have lunch with you before I go?”
“No, just drop me here. You should get back to the hospital,” Ivy insisted. She didn’t want him driving all the way to the dorms–the fancy car was way too conspicuous.
Jamison was reluctant to let her go, but she wouldn’t budge, practically forcing him to stop at the gate.
“I should be home Friday night unless something comes up. Call me if you need anything, okay?” Ivy turned to remind him before getting out.
Jamison didn’t answer, and she could tell he wasn’t thrilled.
Sensing his mood, Ivy ignored the students streaming past, leaned over, and gave him a quick kiss.
Naturally, as she tried to pull away, his strong hand cupped the back of her neck, deepening the kiss.
“Remind me again, when did you say you were a germaphobe?” Ivy muttered as she wiped her lips, shooting him a side–eye.
“Why do you ask?”
“I read somewhere there are over twenty different types of bacteria in the human mouth. With all this kissing, we’re swapping, what, forty or fifty kinds? You’re a doctor–you should know how gross that is.”
Jamison stared at her, half–amused, half–defeated.
“What, did I say something wrong?”
He couldn’t help but laugh, shaking his head. “Sometimes I wish you weren’t so logical. Life would be easier if you were just a little airheaded and sweet.”
Ivy knew exactly what he meant. She rolled her eyes in mock annoyance. “Then maybe you should find yourself an airhead–someone who’d cling to you all day. See how much you like that.”
She pushed open the car door. “I’m going. Drive safe.”
“I will. I’ll come visit when I can.”
“Okay.”
Truth was, Ivy didn’t really want to leave either. But she knew love wasn’t everything, and too much of anything could ruin it. If they spent every waking moment together, once the honeymoon phase faded, one of them would inevitably get tired. She treasured this unlikely twist of fate and this incredible man. That’s why she preferred a slow and steady love–a love that could last.

She loved Jamison, but she loved herself more. She hoped to become an even better version of herself.
Watching the luxury car disappear down the road, Ivy finally turned and walked through the university gates.
There was a small convenience store just inside. She remembered she needed a few things, so she slipped inside and came out a few minutes later with a shopping bag.
She had barely stepped back onto the main path when someone called her name.
“Ivy!”
Startled, she turned and saw a man jogging toward her.
Oh. It was Roberta’s boyfriend–what was his name again? She couldn’t quite remember, but she’d never had a good impression of him. She gave a brief glance and kept walking.
He caught up, eyes lingering on her face with way too much enthusiasm. “Ivy, don’t you remember me? I’m Adler, Roberta’s boyfriend.”
“Yeah, I know,” Ivy replied coolly.
“Hey, is your bag heavy? Here, let me carry it for you.” He reached for her shopping bag.
“No, thanks.” Ivy dodged instinctively.
“Oh, come on, don’t be shy. I’m heading to Roberta’s dorm anyway–it’s on my way.” He reached again.
Ivy fixed him with a cold stare. “I’m not being shy. I just don’t need help.”
“Uh…” Adler laughed awkwardly. “Alright, alright…”
Not wanting to walk with him, Ivy picked up her pace.
But he shamelessly hurried to keep up. “So, Ivy, what does your boyfriend do? He seems loaded.”
“I don’t have a boyfriend. That’s my husband. We’re married.”
“What?” Adler’s voice shot up a few octaves, drawing stares from passing students. “You’re still in school and already married? Don’t tell me you took a break from classes just to get hitched?”
Ivy was thoroughly annoyed.

Just then, a campus shuttle trundled by. Without even asking where it was headed,
Ivy waved it down and hopped on.
