CHAPTER THIRTY EIGHT
CHAPTER THIRTY EIGHT
The sound of the doorbell broke the silence, and Rachel got up to answer it. Lisa watched as Rachel opened the door, a look of relief washing over her face as she saw Jake standing in the doorway.
"Hey," Jake said, his eyes scanning the room as he took in the destruction. "What happened here?"
Rachel stepped aside, allowing Jake to enter. "Marcus happened," she said, her voice tight with anger. "He showed up at the house, looking for Lisa. He trashed the place."
Jake's expression turned grim, and he nodded. "I'm sorry, Rach. I had no idea he was this unstable."
Lisa watched as Jake's eyes met hers, a look of determination in their depths. He was going to help them, and together, they were going to resolve Marcus’ issue.
As Jake listened to Rachel's account of Marcus' behavior, his expression changed from curiosity to concern. He leaned against the couch, his eyes narrowing as he processed the information.
"Marcus is known for going after whatever he wants," Jake said, his voice thoughtful. "But he's never really been stuck on any girl. He's always been the type to move on to the next conquest."
Rachel's eyes flashed with anger. "Well, he's stuck on Lisa now, and it's getting creepy."
Jake nodded, his expression serious. "I agree. This new obsessive behavior is new to me. He never used to care about anyone enough to get this worked up."
Lisa spoke up, her voice firm. "I don't care what his motivations are. I just want him to leave me alone."
Jake's eyes met Lisa's, and for a moment, they just stared at each other. Then Jake spoke up again.
"He must really like you, Lisa, to have come back looking for you like this."
Rachel immediately shut him down, her voice firm. "My friend will never be with somebody like Marcus. He's toxic, and she deserves so much better."
Jake held up his hands, a placating smile on his face. "Hey, I'm not saying she should be with him. I'm just saying that Marcus' behavior is unusual, even for him."
Lisa shook her head, her eyes flashing with anger. "I don't want to feature in his new motivations, Jake. I just want him to stop."
The room fell silent, the only sound was the heavy breathing of the three occupants. Jake's eyes met Rachel's, and they exchanged a weighted glance.
Finally, Jake spoke up again. "Okay, let's figure out what to do next. We need to get Marcus to back off and leave Lisa alone."
As Jake delved deeper into the situation, Lisa and Rachel engaged in a series of furtive, guilty exchanges, their eyes darting back and forth in a telling manner. Jake couldn't help but notice the guilty glances exchanged between Lisa and Rachel. It was as if they were hiding something, and Jake's curiosity was piqued. He asked if there was anything else he should know, and Rachel hesitated for a moment before revealing the truth.
"Marcus sent Lisa money," Rachel said, her voice barely above a whisper. "A lot of money."
Jake's eyes widened as though surprised, but he remained silent, encouraging Rachel to continue.
"Lisa hasn't returned it yet," Rachel added, her eyes darting towards Lisa, who looked away, her cheeks flushing with guilt.
As Jake listened to Rachel's account of Marcus sending Lisa a large sum of money, he barely raised an eyebrow. His nonchalant reaction spoke volumes about Marcus's reputation for reckless spending.
"That's how he blows money away," Jake said with a shrug, his tone implying that Marcus's behavior was nothing new. "He's always throwing money around without thinking twice."
Marcus's behavior was a classic case of using money as a means to exert control or influence over others. By sending Lisa a large sum of money, Marcus was likely trying to buy her affection or attention. It was a manipulative tactic, one that Jake seemed all too familiar with.
"Whether the money is returned or not, it doesn't stop Marcus from doing what he wants to do," Jake said, his words painting a picture of a man driven by his desires, regardless of the outcome.
Jake's words hung in the air, a stark reminder of the reality of their situation. Rachel's expression turned determined, her eyes flashing with anger. "That's exactly why we need to sue him," she said, her voice firm. "We need to take him down, make him pay for what he's done." Lisa nodded in agreement, her eyes locked on Jake's. "And I need to charge a restraining order against him. He can't just keep showing up at my house, trashing the place, and expecting me to be okay with it."
Jake sighed, his expression softening. "I understand why you feel that way, but trust me, the law won't help you against someone as powerful and influential as Marcus." Rachel's eyes narrowed, her anger simmering just below the surface. "What do you mean? He's not above the law." Jake's gaze met hers, his eyes serious. "Marcus has connections, Rachel. He has people who'll do his bidding, who'll make sure he gets what he wants. The law won't be able to protect you, not in the way you think it will."
Lisa's eyes dropped, her shoulders slumping in defeat. Rachel's expression turned mutinous, but Jake could see the fear lurking in her eyes. "So what do you suggest we do?" Rachel asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Jake's gaze locked onto Lisa's, his eyes serious. "I think you should see him, Lisa. Speak to him, return the money, and make it clear that it's over." Lisa's eyes widened in horror, her face paling. "No way," she said, her voice shaking. "I won't do it." Rachel's expression mirrored Lisa's, her eyes flashing with anger. "That's not a good idea, Jake. He needs to be sued, not spoken to."
Jake sighed, his patience wearing thin. "You're not listening to me. Marcus won't stop until he gets what he wants. If you don't speak to him, he'll just keep showing up, keep pushing until he gets a reaction. At least if you see him, you can try to reason with him, make him understand that it's over." Rachel's expression turned stubborn, but Jake could see the doubt lurking in her eyes. "I still think we should sue him," she said, her voice firm.
Jake's gaze met Rachel's, his eyes serious. "I'm not saying we shouldn't take legal action, but for now, this is the best option. We need to buy some time, figure out our next move." Lisa's eyes locked onto Jake's, her expression hesitant. "What if he doesn't listen?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Jake's expression softened, his eyes filled with empathy. "I'll be there with you, Lisa. We'll face him together." Rachel's expression turned reluctant, but eventually, she nodded in agreement. "Fine," she said, her voice tight. "But if he tries anything, I'm there to get him arrested."
Jake nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. "I'll make sure he's on his best behavior." Lisa took a deep breath, her eyes locked on Jake's. "Okay," she said, her voice firm. "Let's do it.''
