Chapter 50 Tracking

Chapter 50 Tracking

Raymond wore a navy blue trench coat, his long legs quite eye-catching.

He was carrying a briefcase, clearly having just arrived not long ago.

Raymond was surprised to run into Cordelia here. He spoke first, "Are you here to see a doctor?"

"Looking for a friend."

Cordelia replied curtly, lowering her head to fish out her car keys as she walked toward her car.

Raymond stepped aside to let her pass. His gaze moved from Cordelia's face to the visitor card clipped to her jacket collar, where the floor number read 7F.

If Raymond remembered correctly, the 7th floor was GeneVita Innovations—unauthorized personnel not allowed.

Looking for a friend in the core R&D area?

Who would believe that excuse!

Raymond waited until her car disappeared before quickening his pace into the elevator.

He was here to attend an academic conference on surgical auxiliary drugs. His contact was on the third floor.

But somehow he pressed the button for the 7th floor. After stepping out of the elevator, he approached the reception desk and asked, "That lady who just left—is she with your company?"

The receptionist looked uncomfortable. "That lady is an important investor in our company. May I ask who you are?"

"Nothing, just curious." Raymond nodded and turned back into the elevator to go downstairs.

An important investor?

In the elevator, Raymond's brow furrowed slightly. Was Cordelia an investor in GeneVita Innovations?

But Raymond knew well that investing in a biotech company required substantial financial and human resources. Where did Cordelia get that kind of money?

Raymond immediately thought of Cordelia's years living in Empire of Upheaval. That place was full of drugs and crime. Could Cordelia have gone down a criminal path?

At this thought, Raymond's frown deepened.

Cordelia, driving away, had just pulled onto the main road when she looked up and spotted that same black Buick from earlier following her again.

Really asking for it!

Cordelia remained calm and continued driving. When she reached a fork in the road, she suddenly yanked the steering wheel, and the car turned into a small side road.

Before the engine even stopped, Cordelia grabbed a baseball bat, opened the door, and got out.

Lonnie Caldwell saw Cordelia's car turn into the small road from a distance. He was hesitating whether to follow when he saw the car stop.

Suspicious, but not thinking too much of it, he stopped his car and jumped out.

He hid to the side and observed for a while. Seeing Cordelia's car just sitting there without any movement, after waiting a bit, the impatient Lonnie walked over.

He pressed against the car window, trying hard to look inside. Unfortunately, the tinted film on Cordelia's windows blocked everything completely. After looking for a long time, Lonnie saw nothing.

Just as he was about to turn and leave in disappointment, a woman's voice came from behind him, "Looking for me?"

Lonnie's heart jumped. He spun around quickly, only to see Cordelia, whom he'd been searching for everywhere, standing right behind him.

"You?"

Seeing him too nervous to speak, Cordelia rested the baseball bat on her shoulder, raised an eyebrow, and slowly walked over. "Are you looking for me or not?"

Lonnie waved his hands frantically in fear. "No, no, you've got the wrong person. I'm just passing by."

"Passing by?"

Cordelia snorted coldly. "You've been following me since I left the apartment complex. I didn't have time to deal with you earlier, but you actually dared to keep following!"

She swung the bat in her hand, striking it against the car's hood, directly blocking Lonnie's path.

"Speak up. Who told you to follow me, and what did they offer you?"

Lonnie cursed himself silently. This might be the first time since becoming a private detective that he'd encountered such a fierce woman.

Looking at her menacing expression, she might actually hit him.

Lonnie shrank back, hurrying to explain, "Miss, I really just happened to pass by and thought it was strange to see a car parked here, so I came to take a look. You've really misunderstood."

Seeing him stubbornly refusing to admit it, Cordelia didn't indulge him. She reached out, grabbed Lonnie by the back of his collar, dragged him over, and threw him into a person-deep mud pit nearby.

It had just rained, and the pit was full of mud mixed with rainwater. After being thrown in, Lonnie was covered in mud and water, dazed for a long moment.

Wait, how did he end up in a mud pit in the blink of an eye?

And how was Cordelia so strong?

When Lonnie looked up again, he saw Cordelia holding a shovel. Looking at her fierce expression, Lonnie was truly scared.

He stammered, "Ms. Fox, what are you doing? Murder is illegal!"

Cordelia sneered. "Now you know I'm Ms. Fox? Didn't you just say you didn't know me?"

Lonnie froze, realizing his slip. He slapped himself on the mouth. "Ms. Fox, I was wrong, really wrong. Please spare me this once."

"I can spare you, but you need to tell me who sent you."

As Cordelia spoke, her hands kept moving, shoveling dirt from the ground and tossing it onto Lonnie.

The hole Lonnie was in was over a person's height, with smooth sides he couldn't climb. With nowhere to hide, watching more and more dirt falling on him, Lonnie finally couldn't take it anymore and begged for mercy.

"Ms. Fox, spare me! A woman named Julie gave me money to follow you."

Hearing Julie's name, Cordelia stopped what she was doing and looked at Lonnie. "Why did she want you to follow me?"

Seeing her stop, Lonnie breathed a sigh of relief and quickly said, "Just to monitor you, to see who you meet with daily."

As if afraid Cordelia would get angry, he hurried to explain, "Including this time, I've only followed Ms. Fox twice total."

Cordelia's face showed no expression. "When was the last time?"

Lonnie thought for a moment. "At your residence. I saw a man come to see you, and I got confused and took a few photos and sent them to Julie."

At this point, Lonnie slapped himself hard twice.

"Ms. Fox, I was really wrong. I'll never dare do it again. Please let me go."

Cordelia remembered now. Lonnie must be talking about when Raymond brought her medicine last time.

Her face remained expressionless. "After you sent the photos, did Julie say anything?"

Lonnie shook his head frantically. "No, no, nothing at all. She just told me to keep following."

He continued begging, "Ms. Fox, I really know I was wrong. I'll never dare do it again. Please spare me this once."

"Give me your phone."

Hearing Cordelia's command, Lonnie quickly complied. Just as he handed over the phone, he heard a loud crash—a shovel came down from above, landing directly on his foot.

Lonnie screamed, clutching his foot as he fell into the mud.

Cordelia took the phone, snapped a photo of Lonnie in the pit, then looked down at him from above. "If you dare follow me again, next time it'll be your head I'm aiming for!"

With that, Cordelia took the phone and turned to leave.

Only Lonnie remained, looking up at the top of the mud pit, then at the shovel by his feet, on the verge of tears.
