Chapter 153 Unexpected Intimacy

Chapter 153 Unexpected Intimacy
Charlotte: POV

The nurse led us down a sterile hallway to a treatment room, her cheerful demeanor a stark contrast to the tension coiled in my chest. Michael's ears were still flaming red, and he kept his gaze fixed firmly on the floor tiles, as if studying their pattern might somehow transport him elsewhere.

The treatment room was small and clinical—pale blue walls, the constant beep of monitors from nearby rooms, and that sharp antiseptic smell that made my nose wrinkle. A young nurse with a cheerful demeanor bustled in with supplies, her ponytail bouncing as she moved.

"Alright, let's get that shirt off and see what we're working with," she said, already reaching for Michael's jacket.

I helped him shrug out of the blood-soaked jacket and shirt, trying not to wince at the glass fragments embedded in his skin. There were three major lacerations—one across his left shoulder, one on his forearm, and a nasty gash along his ribs. Dried blood had crusted around the wounds, and I could see bruises already forming beneath the skin.

"Your boyfriend's pretty brave," the nurse commented as she began cleaning the wounds with practiced efficiency. "These look like defensive injuries. Were you two mugged or something?"

"Something like that," I said vaguely, watching Michael's jaw clench as the antiseptic touched raw flesh.

Michael remained silent, his jaw clenched as the nurse worked. I could see him trying to maintain his professional composure, but the pain and embarrassment were clearly getting to him. His knuckles were white where he gripped the edge of the examination table.

"You're lucky to have her," the nurse continued, oblivious to the tension crackling between us. "Most guys would've just toughed it out at home, but she dragged you here to get proper treatment." She smiled at me warmly. "That's how you know someone really cares."

I felt heat rise to my own cheeks. "I just... didn't want him to bleed to death in my car."

The nurse laughed, a bright sound that felt out of place given the circumstances. "Well, he's not in danger of that. These look worse than they are. Though that shoulder might need an X-ray. Could be a minor dislocation."

She finished cleaning and bandaging the wounds with efficient precision, then left to arrange for the X-ray, promising the doctor would be in shortly.

The moment the door clicked shut, Michael turned to me, his expression a mixture of confusion and something else I couldn't quite read—something that made my pulse quicken.

"Why didn't you correct them?" he asked quietly.

I busied myself with my purse, suddenly unable to meet his eyes. My fingers fumbled with the clasp. "Correct what?"

"You know what. The girlfriend thing." His ears were still red, but his voice was steady. "Why did you say yes?"

I finally looked up at him, and the intensity in his gaze made my breath catch. Those brown eyes with amber flecks seemed to see right through me, stripping away every defense I'd carefully constructed.

"I don't know," I admitted, my voice coming out smaller than I intended. "It just... seemed easier."

"Easier?" he repeated, his brow furrowing. A muscle twitched in his jaw.

"Does it matter?" I asked, feeling defensive now. My hands twisted together. "It's not like we'll ever see these people again. And it made things simpler. Girlfriends get to stay in the room, ask questions, make decisions if needed. Employers... not so much."

Michael studied me for a long moment, and I had the uncomfortable feeling he could see right through my excuse. His gaze was too knowing, too perceptive. "Is that really why?" he asked softly.

The question hung between us, heavy with implications I wasn't ready to explore. The beeping of monitors from the next room suddenly seemed very loud.

"What other reason would there be?" I asked, trying to sound casual and failing miserably. My voice cracked slightly on the last word.

He didn't answer, just continued watching me with those dark, unreadable eyes. The silence stretched, broken only by the muffled sounds of the hospital around us—footsteps in the hallway, distant conversations, the hum of medical equipment.

Finally, he spoke. "You don't owe me anything, you know. For tonight. It's my job to protect you."

"I know that," I said, perhaps too quickly. "But it's also my job to make sure you're taken care of. You work for me, Michael. Your wellbeing is my responsibility."

"Is that what this is?" he asked, and there was something almost challenging in his tone. "Professional responsibility?"

I opened my mouth to say yes, to retreat back into the safe territory of employer-employee boundaries. But the word wouldn't come.

Because the truth was, when I'd seen Sean charging at him with that broken bottle, when I'd watched Michael take hit after hit to keep me safe, something had shifted inside me. Something I wasn't ready to name, but couldn't deny either.

I found myself moving closer to him, drawn by an impulse I didn't fully understand. The clinical lighting cast shadows across his face, highlighting the strong line of his jaw, the curve of his lips.

"You know what?" I said slowly, my voice dropping to something more intimate. "Maybe I should just let you be my real boyfriend."

Michael's eyes widened, and I could see his Adam's apple bob as he swallowed hard.

I sat down on the examination table beside him, close enough that our thighs touched. The warmth of his body radiated through the thin fabric of my dress. Slowly, deliberately, I wrapped my arms around his neck.

"I mean, look at you," I continued, my fingers playing with the hair at his nape. "You're hot as fuck. Built like a goddamn tank. And that thing you did with those guys tonight?" I leaned in closer, my lips nearly brushing his ear. "I bet you're just as good in bed."

Michael's face and ears turned an impressive shade of crimson. He jerked his head away, his entire body going rigid. "Ms. Caldwell, please maintain appropriate boundaries," he said stiffly, though his voice had gone rough. "I don't... I don't sell my body."

I couldn't help but laugh. "Relax, I'm just fucking with you. Your face is priceless right now."

There was something undeniably attractive about Michael Sullivan—not just his looks, but the way he moved, the quiet competence, the unwavering loyalty. The way he'd put himself between me and danger without a second thought.

Before either of us could say anything else, the door opened. The nurse from before poked her head in, her smile widening when she saw our position—me still with my arms around Michael's neck, him looking like he wanted the floor to swallow him whole.

"Aw, you two are so sweet," she said, completely misreading the situation. "Mr. Sullivan, we're ready for that X-ray now. Your girlfriend can come along if she wants."

I slid off the table, suddenly aware of how close we'd been. Michael stood as well, carefully avoiding my gaze as he followed the nurse out of the room.
