Chapter 64 Unexpected visitor

Chapter 64 Unexpected visitor

The warmth of the morning still lingered in the garden as we returned to Silverfang. Sunlight poured through the windows, painting golden streaks on the stone floor, and the faint scent of flowers seemed to follow us inside. I felt a quiet joy just walking beside Aiden, our fingers still entwined, the simplicity of holding hands feeling like the most precious treasure.

I was humming softly, thinking of how the garden had made me feel alive again, when a sharp knock echoed through the hall.

Aiden stiffened beside me, golden eyes narrowing just slightly.

“That’s… unusual,” he murmured, brushing a loose strand of hair from his face. “Visitors aren’t common at this hour.”

I tilted my head. “Do you… want me to answer?”

He shook his head quickly, the faintest blush rising across his cheeks. “I… no. I’ll handle it. You… stay here.”

I gave him a playful smile, brushing my thumb along his hand. “You mean, ‘I’ll handle it and probably make a mess of everything, but try not to be too flustered’?”

Aiden blinked at me, a faint pink spreading across his jaw. He opened his mouth as if to protest, then closed it again, muttering something that sounded suspiciously like, “Impossible girl…”

Before I could tease him further, the door opened. A figure stepped into the hall—a messenger from the human realm, dressed in worn leathers, eyes sharp and cautious. He held a sealed letter, the kind that made the air feel heavier instantly.

“Prince Aiden?” the man asked, voice low but firm. “A message for you—and for Lady Elara.”

Aiden’s hand brushed mine again, shyly, but I noticed the faint tremor in it. His golden eyes darkened slightly as he took the letter, breaking the seal with careful fingers.

“What… what does it say?” I asked softly, moving closer to his side.

Aiden cleared his throat, trying to mask his unease. His cheeks, however, betrayed him, pinking lightly. “It… it’s a message from the human realm,” he murmured. “Something… requires attention. Perhaps… soon.”

My stomach gave a small, nervous twist. “Soon?”

He nodded, swallowing hard. “Yes. We… may need to travel there. Or at least prepare. I… I don’t know the details yet.”

I reached out, touching his arm gently. “We’ll face it together,” I whispered.

Aiden blinked, golden eyes softening with a mixture of relief and… something shy and unspoken. He looked down at our hands. “Together,” he repeated quietly. “Yes… together.”

The messenger shifted, glancing at both of us. “The message is… urgent, Prince. I thought it best to deliver it in person.”

Aiden exhaled, running a hand through his hair. Even in his calmest moments, the strands fell over his face in soft waves that made my heart skip. “Thank you,” he murmured, voice quiet. “We’ll… take it seriously.”

The messenger nodded, then left as quickly as he had arrived, leaving a lingering tension in the hall.

I looked at Aiden. He was trying to straighten, to appear composed and in control, but his hands were fidgeting slightly. His golden hair fell over his forehead, and when he brushed it back, a faint pink tinge revealed how much he was trying not to show the nervousness I could feel in the pit of my stomach.

“You’re… flustered,” I teased softly, stepping closer.

He froze, golden eyes wide, and his lips parted for a moment before he muttered, “I… I am not. I’m… not flustered.”

I smiled, lifting a hand to tuck a stray strand of hair behind his ear. “You’re adorable when you try not to be.”

His ears burned, and he glanced away, muttering something almost inaudible. “…Impossible girl.”

I laughed softly, brushing my thumb along his jaw. “You know, you don’t have to hide it from me. I can see everything, Aiden. Even the parts you think you’re hiding.”

He swallowed, shyness curling around him like a cloak. Then, almost imperceptibly, his hand found mine, fingers brushing gently against mine. “It… it’s harder than I thought,” he admitted, voice low. “To stay… composed… when there’s so much at stake. And… and you’re here.”

My chest tightened at the honesty in his tone. I stepped closer, brushing my forehead against his shoulder. “Then lean on me,” I whispered. “We’ll face it together. I’m not going anywhere.”

Aiden’s shoulders relaxed slightly, and he let out a quiet breath. “Thank you… Elara.”

We stood together for a moment, the quiet of Silverfang surrounding us, the sunlight streaming in soft golden beams. The letter lay unopened on the table beside us, a symbol of responsibilities and potential danger, but for a brief moment, it didn’t matter. All that mattered was the warmth between us, the gentle press of our hands, the way his golden hair fell around us like a halo.

Finally, he reached for the letter, his hand brushing mine again, shyness and tenderness wrapped into every gesture. “We’ll read this together,” he said softly. “And… we’ll handle whatever comes next. I… I won’t let anything happen to you.”

I smiled, resting my head against his shoulder. “I know.”

He inhaled sharply, golden eyes flicking to mine, and I felt the familiar warmth of his presence, steady and protective, wash over me. He tried to hide the small blush creeping along his neck, but I caught it instantly and pressed my fingers against his chest lightly.

“You don’t have to hide it,” I whispered. “Not with me.”

He glanced down at me, lips parting as if to say something, then pressed a shy kiss to the top of my head. “Not with you,” he murmured, voice soft.

The letter still lay on the table, a subtle reminder of the world beyond our golden bubble, but for now, Aiden and I simply held each other, letting the quiet intimacy between us anchor our hearts.

And as the sunlight danced across the room, I realized something: no matter what challenges came from the human realm, from Silverfang, or from the unknown, we would face it side by side.

Together.

And in that certainty, even the weight of responsibility felt lighter.
