Chapter 40 “The Wolf Who Knew My Name”

Chapter 40 “The Wolf Who Knew My Name”

The air in the war chamber vibrates with magic and dread. My body trembles as Aiden holds me close, shielding me instinctively. The wolf stands at the center, colossal, its black fur blending with the shadows, eyes burning amber with a terrible familiarity.

And then, for a fleeting heartbeat, I see him—my father. The gentle face I remember as a child. The warmth, the protection, the love. But it’s twisted now, half-shattered by whatever ancient magic consumed him.

“Papa…” My voice is barely a whisper.

Aiden stiffens, eyes flaring gold. “Elara—no.”

But I can’t stop myself. Something inside me—my heart, my soul—recognizes him. “Why… why are you doing this?”

The wolf tilts its massive head, and the voice slips into my mind, low, broken, and yet unmistakably familiar.

Elera… my star…

Tears spring to my eyes. My knees threaten to buckle. “Father…”

Aiden tightens his grip, growling. “She’s mine!” His wolf surges forward, golden eyes blazing as he steps between me and the creature. “You’ll never touch her!”

The wolf lets out a low, rumbling snarl. Its shadow stretches across the room, creeping along the walls, twisting the torches’ flames.

Always… my daughter… The voice is weaker now, strangled, as if some part of him is fighting against the corruption. Run… hide… he’s not me…

Aiden’s fury explodes. He shifts fully, wolf form surging, claws raking the floor. The chamber shakes under the weight of our combined magic. “If you were still my father,” he growls, “you wouldn’t have become this monster!”

The wolf tilts its head, eyes flickering to Aiden, recognition—and something like regret—hiding beneath the corruption.

He’s not… the one…

My chest tightens. “Father, fight it!” My voice cracks with desperation. “You are not this thing!”

The wolf snarls, and for a terrifying instant, its shadowed face contorts into the man I knew, pleading with me with those amber eyes. But then the darkness roars louder, and the illusion fades.

The Seer steps forward, staff raised, voice trembling. “The corruption is ancient. It’s using his body as a vessel. Only something equally powerful—or a pure heart—can anchor him back.”

Aiden looks at me, breathing hard, claws scraping the floor. “You?” he asks, voice raw. “You’re the anchor?”

I shake my head weakly. “I don’t know… but I can try!” My magic stirs beneath my skin, silver-blue flames flickering along my arms.

“Wait—no!” The Seer yells. “Your power is still unstable. If you strike him now, it could destroy you both!”

I glance at Aiden, who shakes his head fiercely. “I don’t care. I won’t let him hurt her—or anyone else!” He gestures for me to stay behind him, but I refuse.

“I’m not staying behind!” I shout. “He’s my father! I can reach him!”

The wolf advances, each step cracking the stone beneath it. Its gaze fixes on me, and suddenly, the corruption inside it flares, a pulse of darkness radiating from its body like poison. I stumble back, magic erupting uncontrollably from me in defensive waves, knocking the guards to the walls.

Aiden lunges, catching me before I fall. He presses his forehead to mine, his claws retracting slightly as he speaks in a low, fierce whisper. “Then we do this together. Now.”

I take a shaky breath and focus. Memories of my father flood me—the bedtime stories, the lullabies, the warmth of his hands. The love I felt, pure and untarnished. I reach deep into myself, channeling that memory, that love, into a tether aimed at the wolf.

“Father!” I shout. “Hear me! You are not this shadow! You are more than this darkness!”

The wolf halts, ears flicking, eyes narrowing. The amber glow falters. It growls, but it’s quieter, confused.

Aiden presses closer, his wolf form glowing gold, claws tapping in the air, creating a protective barrier around me. “He can hear you!” he says, voice fierce. “Keep going!”

I step forward, letting my magic flow, letting my voice pierce the darkness. “Remember who you were! The man who held me when I was scared, who taught me to be brave. That man still exists—he’s still in there!”

For a moment, the world is silent. Then the wolf trembles. Its massive body shudders violently, black shadows peeling off, revealing glimpses of human form beneath. A low, guttural cry escapes its throat—a mixture of pain and recognition.

Aiden grabs my hand, pulling me slightly back. “Don’t let go of him! Anchor him with your heart!”

I close my eyes, letting all my love, all my memories, all my soul flow into the tether. I feel the corruption fight back, twisting and clawing, but I refuse to let go.

And then, it happens.

A blinding flash of silver-blue erupts from me, striking the wolf directly in the chest. The shadows scream, twisting like smoke around him, before splintering into nothingness. The wolf collapses, no longer monstrous, but weak and trembling.

I stagger forward, and the figure before me shifts—familiar, human. My father’s face, pale and exhausted, stares at me.

“E… Elara…” His voice is hoarse, broken. “My star…”

I fall to my knees beside him, tears streaming freely. “Papa… you’re back…”

Aiden drops beside us, pressing a hand to my shoulder. “He’s free,” he whispers, his eyes still glowing gold, tail of wolf-form flickering faintly behind him.

The Queen steps forward, still wary. “Are you certain the corruption is gone?”

The Seer nods slowly. “For now. But remnants linger. We must keep him under watch.”

My father’s lips twitch into a faint, tired smile. “I… I am so sorry, my daughter. For everything.”

I throw my arms around him, sobbing. “Don’t ever leave me again!”

Aiden watches, chest heaving, jaw tight. His hand brushes mine instinctively, possessively, and I feel the bond thrum between us, stronger than ever after surviving everything together.

But outside the war chamber, beyond the palace walls, I know the danger hasn’t vanished. The shadows that corrupted him came from somewhere ancient and evil. And now, they will return.

I glance at Aiden, resolve hardening in his golden eyes. “We face it together,” I whisper.

“Yes,” he says, leaning close, brushing his lips to my temple. “Always together.”

And as my father trembles nearby, whispering apologies and fear, I know one terrifying truth: the game has only just begun.

Because the shadows are still watching.
And they know my name.
