Chapter 43 What’s Wrong With Boss?
SIENNA

A strange coldness hit me like a tidal wave. The atmosphere became suffocating and uncomfortable. Everyone in the office shared glances as they tried to comprehend why the CEO was standing in the middle of the office with both hands in his pockets.

“Whose are those?” He pointed at the flowers on the table, his eyes darting over them with no ounce of care. It was at that moment that I knew I’d made a mistake. He wasn’t the one who sent the flowers, and I’d just indirectly informed him that another man sent me flowers.

Lowering my head, I bit my lower lip and shook my head slightly as I cursed myself inwardly. I was such a fool. What sort of mistake did I just make?

Everyone remained silent. They didn’t answer his question, and he was definitely not having it.

“Whose are those?” he grunted, visibly pissed off.

I shuddered at the intensity and seriousness of his voice and gaze. What the hell have I done?

“Mi… mine, sir,” I stuttered, terrified. I stood up from my seat. I wasn’t even seeing the man who used to pin me to the wall and suck the hell out of me. I wasn’t seeing the man who always fucked the hell out of me until I couldn’t pronounce his name anymore. I saw somebody else. Someone scary.

For a moment, there was silence. He scanned me from head to toe as though I were someone he was just seeing for the first time, and weirdly, that broke my heart.

Without saying a word, he shifted his gaze to John and said, “Clean those up. I’m allergic to flowers.” He pointed at the bouquet.

Everyone exchanged glances, stunned.

John stood up. “Boss, I don’t think the flowers will trigger your allergy since they’re far from your office,” he spoke up defensively, glancing at me with empathy.

Only if I could drag John to a corner and warn him not to trudge the path he laid because of its danger. This was the worst time to speak back to Lucien. He could do the unthinkable.

“Who’s boss?” His voice cut me short.

The smile on John’s face dissipated when he heard the question. Of course, he didn’t need to be warned twice before realizing what he had done. Lines of fear appeared on his face as he scratched the back of his neck.

“I… I… no… That isn’t my intention. I… I just thought to…”

“Throw them out. Now!!!”

John rushed over, snatched the flowers, and dashed away without sparing me another glance. I didn’t even feel sad for the flowers but for the poor boy. He’d just earned himself a transfer of aggression from Lucien. It was going to be a long day for him today.

My head was still lowered. I couldn’t bear to look at Lucien’s face. I couldn’t dare. I already knew what I would find, so I didn’t bother.

After staring for a few additional seconds, he spun around and returned to his office. Only then did everyone release a sharp breath. Murmurs spread across the office. Some looked at me with empathy, and some made it glaringly obvious that it was my fault.

I didn’t react. Whatever I got from them was worth it. If only I’d used my brain and not sent that message.

“Ding! Ding!” beeps filled the room. Everyone’s phones beeped one after the other, indicating a new message. Since it came at the same time, it was definitely from the company’s website.

At first, I had no intention of checking what it was, but when the stares and murmurs increased, I just had to.

I expected everything but not this. Lucien had just prohibited flowers in the office and throughout the whole company. My mouth parted, and for seconds, I could only blink.

Wait. Wasn’t he lying about being allergic to flowers? I thought he said that because he was angry I received flowers from another man. Was he serious?

I inhaled deeply. Things were more complicated than I assumed, and I couldn’t believe I’d just become a topic in the company. They would definitely blame me for instigating this new rule.

“Miss Sienna Vale,” Lucien’s voice wafted into my ears.

Instantly, I stood up. “Yes, boss.”

The door to his office was slightly open, and he popped his head outside.

“Your attention is needed in my office. Now.” He shut the door afterward. Just like he was stern with John, he wasn’t gentle with me either. Something within me twisted, knowing I was the one who caused all this. I should have made my findings before assuming he sent the flowers.

As I stood up and walked toward his office, everyone stared at me sympathetically, including those who were blaming me for putting them in trouble. Well, I guessed they knew being called to Lucien’s office in such an atmosphere meant something deadly.

My knees weakened and shook slightly as I neared his door. What was he going to do with me? Sack me?
