Chapter 39 The mystery Arsonist
: The mystery arsonist
The place had begun to engulf in flames. My heart raced as I banged on the door, pressing my back against it as I used the door knob once again to pry it open. This is the worst time to have a faulty door.
“My clo—clothes, my documents! Fire—Fire!” I yelled, realizing the severity of the situation I’m in.
“Somebody help—help me!” I screamed, hearing a little chatter from outside, I screamed some more banging on the door until I heard a voice call from outside the door.
“Miss Thompson—are you in there?” The raspy masculine voice yelled. In response, I did the same, screaming “Yes!” I yelled aloud, still coughing as the smoke had made its way to my lungs.
“Ma’am—please stand away from the door, we’re forcing it open!” The man yelled from outside and immediately I did so, standing by the side of the door as the flames continued to rage, blurring my sight and burning all of my things.
“Please hurry” I coughed, standing away from the door as I heard the banging grow louder, praying deep in my heart that I’m rescued. I clasped my hands together, shutting my eyes completely as the door came flying open. A man emerged from the unhinged door which lied next to me.
“Stretch out your arm!” he yelled. I did as told, stretching out my arm, I felt a weight pull me up in the midst of the chaos and led me out of the room covered in smoke. I could hear the sirens blaring from below as I made my way down with an aid.
My belongings—everything, gone. I let the tears in my eyes fall as I watched the firefighters put out the fire as quickly as they could. “Ma’am” one of the men in uniform came in front of me, his light blue eyes reflecting the flame in my eyes as I watched it all burn.
“Ma’am” he called out again, snapping me back to reality “Ma’am—are you okay? Do you need to get to the hospital?” He asked in a low tone as I watched with only a few shakes of the head to notify that I didn’t want anything—just my money and belongings which had now gone up in flames.
“I know you’re in shock but ma’am—you have to pull yourself together” he held onto my shoulders trying to communicate but all I could hear were muffled chatter and screams.
“Amorino—Lily” Dante called from behind, nodding to the man in uniform.
“Are you her partner?” The man asked but before he could say anything else, Dante had me in his arms, picking me up and heading straight for his car. My heart raced as fear crept in, everything I had—gone.
“Just hang on” Dante breathed as he took me into the car, placing me at the back seat and letting himself in “Drive” he said to the driver who quickly put his foot on the accelerator, driving off immediately while I shuddered on his body, tears trickling down my cherk as I sobbed uncontrollably.
“It’ll be fine—I promise” his soft baritone kept assuring me until we got home.
Casperall stood by the door, her arms opened wide to take me in, I hugged her, letting my tears flow. Everything I had abs thought I would actually use were either burnt to ashes or still in the flames. I didn’t hesitate the moment I sat on the couch, I cried myself to sleep.
“Good morning Lily” Casperall said the moment I opened my eyes to see the shining light emanating from the window. A tray of food in her hands as I placed my hands on the sherts running up my legs.
“Wh—where am I?” I asked with a raspy voice, squinting my eyes so I could see her properly.
“You’re home—mister Moretti brought you back when you witnessed the fire at the hotel, I’m glad you’re awake” her voice etched with concern, she placed the back of her palm on my forehead as I tried to discern what happened and what she had just said.
“Oh my—miss, you’re having a fever!” She exclaimed, putting the tray on the table right beside the bed and sitting next to me as she pulled out a thermometer and stuck it in my mouth, above my tongue.
“Wh—what’s happening?” I mumbled as she took it out. Watching her act so concerned made me shudder just a bit. She acted like she was my mother. I couldn’t lie—I loved being treated like that, a child.
“You need to go to the doctor” she said, turning to leave. I held her by her wrist, half awake and yawning through the morning.
“I’m fine—it’s fine, there’s no need to do all that, I’ll be fine, where’s Dante?” The first question that slipped out of my lips were his whereabouts. I couldn’t understand why but I needed to speak to him about the fire.
“He’s downstairs—having breakfast” she pointed towards the door. I nodded quickly, rushing out of my room and straight to him. “Miss—miss Lily—please wait up” I heard from behind but my mind was solely on how to confront him, after all, the fire seemed to have been caused in my apartment which means either he had done it to bring me back here or someone else has been targeting me.
“Dante—I need to speak to you!” I yelled from the top of the stairs, walking down hastily as much as I could. There he was, sitting on dining table, sipping his tea gently as he scrolled on his phone. He quickly turned his gaze to me the moment I walked in.
“Oh great—Amorino, you’re awake” he said with a smile, placing down his cup and settling the earphones in his ear. “I’ll talk once I get to work” he mumbled. I could tell that he was talking to the party on the other side of the phone.
“Why did you do it?” I asked. He raised a brow at me before taking out the ear phones he had in his ears. He didn’t respond, just a stare that read “What are you talking about?”
“Why did I do what?” He questioned, his demeanor steady and unmoved, it irked me. I could tell even without proof that to keep me, he somewhat concocted everything and got the hotel burnt just so I would run back to him.
“You caused the incident yesterday—didn’t you?” I threw it like a bomb. Casperall gasped before turning to leave. I could hear her from behind me as she scurried along with the other workers who moved away swiftly.
“And cost you your life? You know I’d never do that Amorino—why would I want that?” His voice sounded sincere but I just couldn’t trust it. It was uncanny. First, I was called here with the excuse that he didn’t want to go to the doctor, then—my apartment is set on fire and is irreplaceable.
“Then how did you get to me so quickly?!”
“It was on the news—also Claire called me to make sure you were alright, she said she heard that the hotel you were in had caught on fire” I paused to think—that was quite plausible, she knew Felov as the owner and ofcourse she’d call him first.
Drained of my strength, I pulled out a chair and took a seat, “Then it must be someone watching me!” I exclaimed
“I can’t believe you’d think that I did that—after everything we’ve been through” he paused, he had a point “Is that how shallow you think I am Lily?” His question hit a nerve. My glare loosened. I didn’t seem to make it look like that—all the circumstances pointed towards that.
“I—I didn’t me—mean it like that” I stuttered for loss of words, I really didn’t intend to hurt him, except her hurt me, which he didn’t. “It wasn’t my intention to do that—I mean, it’s not like I don’t trust you—”
“But you know that I’m a bad man who’s willing to get what he wants” he exhaled, taking his suit, pulling out his chair “I’m leaving for work—I already processed your leave of absence. Stay home and rest” he said with a stern face as he made his way to the door.
“Dante” I called out, he didn’t look back. I sank my body on the couch. I blew it. He’s letting me stay on his property with no rent considered, yet, the first I do is accuse the man I claim to love.
“You’re really a fool Lily!” I yelled, taking a cushion pillow to my face to muffle my scream. Just as I stood up to get back to my room, maybe to get a hot bath, I noticed a paper lying on the dining table. It was a picture—a picture of a man.
I stared at it, it looked familiar—a man with an atrocious hoodie—dark shades, it was him, the man from yesterday who bumped into me. I could tell that something was off about him and the paper he held which had the number 601, or maybe it was the number 109.
“That’s my room number” I mumbled “He’s the one who tried to kill me”
