CHAPTER 142
IS THIS REALLY MY DORIAN?
CHARLOTTE
I had not been in the pack house since the previous day.
I went to the campus to collect the textbooks for the classes I had missed so I could catch up. After that I went straight to Zade’s house.
I needed the quiet to revise and copy notes without interruption. Mia’s call came while I was still there. She told me to return to the pack house immediately. I did not argue.
Zade had already been complaining about me staying alone. He kept reminding me that the rogues who attacked me in Italy could still be watching.
I arrived to find the pack house in the middle of a heated commotion. Voices overlapped in the main areas. I caught the same words repeated from different directions: Pregnancy, The Alpha, The right decision.
I found Mia in the kitchen. She grabbed my wrist the moment she saw me and pulled me toward my room. Once the door closed she spoke fast.
“Something juicy happened yesterday and today. You need to hear it.”
I dropped onto the edge of my bed. The mattress dipped under my weight. “Spill the tea.”
Mia sat across from me. “Alpha Dorian got Selina pregnant.”
I stared at her. A short chuckle left my mouth before I could stop it. “You are telling a lie, right? Dorian would not do such a thing.”
She shook her head. “That is what I believed when Selina made the announcement in the main room yesterday. Then the healer’s result came back inconclusive. She is still standing on her words that Dorian is the father. He is actively denying it. That part makes it look suspicious. It seems she went to him first, he denied it, and then she told the whole pack.”
My heart started racing at once. The beat turned hard and uneven under my ribs. Heat rose up my neck and into my face. My fingers tightened against the edge of the mattress until the fabric bunched under them.
A cold pressure settled in my stomach. I could hear my own breathing in the quiet room. The words kept repeating in my head and none of them fitted with the man I thought I knew.
I stood up so fast the bed shifted behind me. Mia called after me.
“Where are you going?”
I did not answer. I was already out the door and moving down the corridor toward Dorian’s office. My boots struck the floor harder than usual. Inside my chest Lumina was howling, the sound sharp and restless. Shock mixed with something hotter. I forced the wolf to settle.
Quiet. Be still. We need to hear it from his mouth first.
I reached the office, opened the door, and walked straight in.
Dorian looked up from the papers on his table. A smile formed on his face. “When did you return?”
The smile landed wrong. I remembered clearly that he had not called or messaged once to ask where I was. Yet here he sat, smiling and welcoming me as if he had been paying attention the entire time. My hands curled into fists at my sides.
I stopped in front of the table. My voice came out tighter than I expected. “Is what I am hearing true?”
He set the pen down and looked at me. “What did you hear?”
I pointed a finger at him. The tip stayed steady even though my pulse did not. “Do not even dare pretend. Is it true? Tell me, is it true?”
He sighed. The sound was low. “I am not the father of the child, Charlotte.”
I kept my eyes on his face. “How do you expect me to believe that? You two were dating when I arrived at the pack. She's always hooked up around you.”
His frown came fast and spread wide across his face. “I never dated Selina. Do not use that kind of word.”
I stepped closer to the edge of the table. “Just tell me the truth. Are you the father of the child?”
“I am not.” he answered, the frowns deepening.
The denial sat between us. My throat felt dry. “Okay fine. Let's agree you didn't get her pregnant. Did you sleep with her or not?”
He pressed his lips together tightly. For a moment he said nothing. Then the words came out flat. “It was before anything began happening between us.”
I shook my head. The motion felt sharp. Heat and pressure built behind my eyes at the same time. My voice dropped but stayed clear.
“That's a big lie and you know that, Dorian.” I yelled. “I feel betrayed. You had sex with her knowing fully well I am your mate. I feel so betrayed and heartbroken. All this while you were just trying to get into my pants. You used me and lied to me. You made me believe you really cared about me. But you did not care at all.”
Dorian’s voice came firm across the desk. “Do not speak like that. I never used you. I never lied to you about anything. Stop saying this nonsense. It's seriously pissing me off.”
I stared at him. My chest felt tight enough that each breath came short. Heat sat heavy behind my eyes and my fingers pressed hard against the edge of the table until the wood bit into my skin.
“Can you not read the handwriting on the wall? Selina’s pregnancy is a lie. She is trying to take what we have for each other and destroy it.”
My pulse hammered in my throat. I forced the next words out before the pressure in my chest could stop them.
“She has attacked me twice. She was the one who attacked me at the training ground. She warned me never to get close to you.”
Dorian’s expression hardened at once. His shoulders squared and his eyes narrowed. “Why are you telling me this now? I clearly remember asking you then. You refused to inform me. I begged you to. I literally did everything but you refused to inform me.”
The tone of his voice landed like a slap. I pulled back half a step. Did Dorian just speak to me this way? My throat tightened until it hurt to swallow.
“I did not inform you because she threatened me. She said you were not going to believe me. That's the reason I refused to inform you.”
He looked at me without blinking. The silence between us stretched long enough for my stomach to twist.
“So you believed Selina over the chance that I would not believe you? Is that what you're trying to say?”
The words pushed the air straight out of my lungs. Tears rose fast and spilled over before I could stop them. My voice cracked as it left my mouth.
“What was I supposed to do? I did not know you were my mate. I felt the pull between us and I asked you about it. You kept lying to me. So I believed her. She poisoned me with wolfsbane. She attacked me until I almost died. I was scared. If you're the one, won't you be? That is why I stayed quiet.”
Dorian shook his head once. His voice stayed flat and cold. “That is not an excuse. You should have trusted me as your Alpha. I would have protected you. You should have told me then, not now.”
Frustration and hurt mixed until my hands started shaking. I curled them into fists at my sides and pressed my nails into my palms to keep control. Inside my head the same thought kept circling.
He is not listening. He is choosing her version over mine.
My voice came out tighter than before. “This is what Selina wanted. She planned this.”
He held my gaze without softening. “Do you have any proof of that?”
My mouth opened. No sound came out. I closed it. I opened it again. Closed it once more. I stared at him and could not believe the words that had just left his mouth. He was supporting her. He was not taking anything I said as truth. Everything I had just told him sat between us and changed nothing.
I did not know how to make him see it from my side. The urge to beg rose for a second and I pushed it down hard. I was too proud for that. My eyes burned but I kept them open.
My voice dropped lower but stayed steady. “Something is wrong, Dorian. Do not believe Selina. Investigate the pregnancy properly.”
Dorian straightened the papers on his desk with slow, deliberate movements. His tone turned final. “You are letting jealousy cloud your judgment. This is not your business.”
