Chapter 16 The first message
“Are you okay”?
Dona asked and Hazel nodded, trying to recollect herself.
“You should make some sounds instead of startling me like that”.
She said as she stood up, dusting herself up but Dona raised her brows.
“Huh? What are you talking about? I've been calling you but you kept murmuring for someone to leave you alone. You only went silent after I tapped you”.
She said and Hazel looked at her surprised.
“I was murmuring”?
She asked and Dona nodded.
“You sounded like someone was following you or something”.
She said but Hazel stayed silent as she could not remember saying anything like that. To her, she was awfully quiet.
She then looked at Dona and spoke.
“What about you? You kept screaming and saying someone would win and all of us would die”.
Hazel said and Dona immediately went mute, causing Hazel to look at her with a brow raised in suspicion.
“Dona”?
She called, stretching out her name.
“Huh”?
Dona answered with her eyes wide opened.
“What are you not telling me”?
She asked but Dona shook her head. Hazel was about to speak again when Lucian barged into the room.
“Mom, mom! You need to come outside”.
He said and both ladies looked at each other before rushing outside.
As soon as they got out, Hazel placed her hand on her mouth in shock.
“How did this happen”?
Hazel asked but Kael who was there before all of them just stayed silent, looking at the dead ravens on the floor.
Dona stood behind them. She knew this was her fault but she wasn't sure why they would die without a clear intention. Usually when creatures around her dies, it was usually because she was scared and tried to defend herself.
It was often the creatures that tried to cause her harm that she ends up killing but of course, a few innocent victims could be affected once in a while.
'could it be because of the vision'?
She thought with her heart beating so fast.
“That's not possible, I've never killed anything because of a vision before and I've had worse visions”.
She said, trying to console herself but it wasn't working.
Her eyes opened wide when Hazel turned and began walking towards her.
“Was this you”?
Hazel asked, putting Kael's attention on them.
Dona stayed silent. She couldn't defend herself but she was hurt at how quickly Hazel accused her.
Hazel closed her eyes and exhaled. She didn't want to say anything that she would regret but something was off about Dona. It felt like she was hiding something.
“Dad! Mom”!
Lucian called out, drawing their attention away from Dona.
“I found this on one of the birds”.
He said and they immediately rushed to collect it from him.
It was an arrow with a piece of paper.
Hazel opened it and began to read.
“It's been five long years Hazel, but you're still no fun.
I've decided to take matters into my own hands and bring a little bit of something to you. So tell me, how do you like my little gift”?
That was all the paper read before suddenly, the bird that were all dead and scattered around the ground began to come back alive, flying away like nothing happened.
And in no time, all the birds were gone. All except the one who was shot with an arrow".
Hazel kept looking at the letter and all she could think of was…
“Dona”.
She turned to were Dona was standing and she was still there but as soon as Hazel turned to her, she ran back inside.
Hazel let out a sigh of frustration.
“What is wrong with me? Why do I keep suspecting her for everything”?
She said a bit loudly, causing Kael to turn to her.
“If your mind is telling you not to trust her, then you should probably listen. But don't push her away completely”.
He said and she turned to him with a brow raised.
“Remember, the only way to get your enemy is to keep them close”.
He said and she nodded but her heart felt tight.
She was missing something, she could feel it but she wasn't sure what it was.
With the confusion in her mind, she squeezed the letter in her hand, folding her hands in a fist.
Dona rushed into her room and began packing her bag. She didn't have much to pack so she just packed all of her essentials, ready to leave this place as soon as possible.
But while she was packing, she suddenly felt like throwing up.
She ran to the bathroom and began to vomit blood. She looked at herself in the mirror and her reflection gave her an evil smile with blood on it's teeth.
“Black magic”.
She said and suddenly turned when she heard the door to the room open up.
Flushing down the blood and going back to the room, she met Hazel in the room.
Hazel turned to her in shock.
“Where are you going”?
She asked and Dona walked towards her bag and zipped it up.
“I'm leaving, I'll go back to the witches village or somewhere else but I can't stay here anymore”.
She said but Hazel moved closer.
“Dona, I'm sorry okay? I… I was a bit out of it but you can't leave because of a misunderstanding”.
She said and Dona scoffed.
“A misunderstanding? We haven't been here for up to a week Hazel. If you already doubt me so much in two days, I can only imagine how the rest of my stay here will be".
She said and shook her head as she carried her bag.
“It's best to maintain the good memories I have of you and leave. I don't want to have to hate you Hazel".
She said and Hazel moved closer about to speak when Dona coughed.
Hazel looked at her, wondering if she was fine but the moment Dona opened her hand, it was filled with blood.
Hazel's eyes opened wide as she looked at her.
“Dona you…”
Dona's heart was beating fast, hoping Hazel wasn't about to accuse her of something else.
“Are you being attacked”?
