Chapter 90 You Can Have Whatever You Want Sarah

Chapter 90 You Can Have Whatever You Want Sarah
The smell of wet ash and burnt plastic was the first thing that hit Sarah as she stepped through the ruined entrance of her studio, and the morning light coming through the collapsed roof made the interior look like a skeleton of the place she had spent twenty years building.

She didn't cry, she just walked to the center of the room and looked at the blackened remains of her drafting table, her boots crunching on the soot and the melted glass that had once been her front window.

Alex walked behind her, his hand resting on the small of her back as he navigated the debris, and the tension between them was no longer about the lies of the Harrington family or the secrets of the Vane estate.

It was a physical, grounding relief to be standing in the wreckage together, and for the first time since the fire, Sarah didn't feel like she was looking at the end of her career, she felt like she was looking at a blank site that was ready for a new foundation.

"The structural beams are still intact, and the fire department says the basement safe held the heat, so the original blueprints for the North End are likely still in one piece," Alex said, his voice was a low, steady sound in the quiet of the ruins, and he didn't look like a corporate heir anymore, he looked like a man who was already calculating the tonnage of the debris that needed to be moved.

"It’s just wood and drywall, Alex, I’ve built a hundred buildings from less than this, so don't look at me like I’m a victim of a tragedy," Sarah said, she turned to face him and her eyes were sharp and focused, her business mind already taking over the shock of the loss.

"I’m not looking at a victim, I’m looking at the lead architect of the Harrington-Hayes partnership, and I’m looking at a studio that is going to be rebuilt by the best crew in the city starting at noon today," Alex told her, he pulled his phone from his pocket and his thumb moved across the screen with a fast, authoritative energy that showed he was already back in command.

"I haven't signed a contract for a rebuild yet, and I haven't cleared the insurance adjusters, so you can put that phone away until we talk about the budget," Sarah said, she walked over to him and put her hand on the device, stopping his movement.

"The budget is part of the corporate restructuring, Sarah, and as the head of the trust, I have the authority to fast-track any project that is critical to the North End clinics," Alex replied, he looked at her with a look that was both stubborn and full of a raw, private heat.

"I am the owner of this firm, and I am not accepting a rebuild as a gift from the Harrington Group, because if I do, the board will always think they own a piece of my name," Sarah told him, her voice was a firm line of steel that didn't leave room for an argument. "I want a formal loan agreement, with a standard interest rate and a ten-year repayment schedule, and I want it drafted by my own lawyers before a single hammer hits a nail."

"You really aren't going to let me do this for you, are you?" Alex asked, he let out a short, frustrated breath but he didn't look angry, he looked like he was finally seeing the woman who didn't need a savior.

"I’m letting you provide the capital, Alex, but I’m the one who is going to pay it back with the work I do on those clinics, and that is the only way this partnership is going to survive the next twenty years," Sarah said, she stepped closer to him until their chests were touching, her hands sliding up to grip his shoulders.

"Fine, I’ll have the legal team draft a loan by five o'clock, but I’m still hiring the foreman I want, because I’m not having you work in a building that isn't reinforced for a direct hit from a tank," Alex said, and he pulled her into him, his arms wrapping around her waist with an authoritative, heavy pressure that made the burnt room feel like a sanctuary.

They stood in the middle of the scorched office, the sun hitting the soot on their clothes, and the physical connection between them was a restorative force that stripped away the last of the week's exhaustion. Alex took control of the moment, his kiss was deep and possessive, a raw confirmation that they were no longer fighting a war, they were building a life. Sarah met him with a hunger that was just as intense, her hands pulling him closer as she realized that the Smart Sarah who had built the firm was finally paired with a man who was her equal in every way. There were no more secrets to hide and no more family members to run from, there was only the smell of the salt air coming through the broken windows and the weight of their partnership.

"I want the new office to have a glass wall that looks toward the North End, so I can see the progress on the clinics every morning," Sarah whispered against his skin as they finally pulled apart, her eyes bright with a new vision for the space.

"You can have whatever you want, Sarah, as long as the door has a lock that only I have the key to," Alex joked, his voice was a warm murmur that made her laugh for the first time in days.

They spent the next hour walking through the rest of the building, making notes on what could be salvaged and what needed to be scrapped, and the conversation was basic and focused on the logistics of the reconstruction.

Mark had already sent over the equipment manifests from the Vane estate, and the first flatbed truck from the construction union was already pulling up to the curb outside. The neighborhood was starting to wake up, and the people from the local shops were coming out to see the two of them standing in the ruins, and there was a sense of quiet support in the way the bakery owner nodded to Sarah as he opened his door.

"The city is already talking about the decree, and the press is calling it the start of a new era for the district," Alex said, he looked at the street and then at the phone in his hand, which was buzzing with a new set of messages from the Harrington legal team.

"The board is scared, but the unions are on our side, and that is something my father never understood how to manage."

"Your father managed through fear, but you are managing through a contract, and that is why you are going to win this time," Sarah told him, she leaned against the blackened wall and watched him work the phone, her observant mind noting the way he carried the Harrington authority without the Harrington cruelty.

The quiet of the office was broken by the sharp, rhythmic ringing of Alex’s private line, the one that he only used for family and his personal staff. He pulled it out and saw the name on the screen, and his expression went from focused to a state of sudden, sharp alert as he hit the speaker button.

"Dr. Aris? Is everything okay at the cabin?" Alex asked, his voice was a low, urgent sound that made Sarah stand up straight.

"He is awake, Alex, and the monitors are showing a stable heart rate for the first time in forty-eight hours," the doctor’s voice came through, sounding tired but relieved.

"That’s good news, tell him I’m on my way and I’ll be there within the hour," Alex said, he was already reaching for his car keys.

"Wait, Alex, you don't understand," the doctor said, and there was a pause on the other end of the line that made the air in the studio feel cold. "He knows about the decree and he knows about the trust, but he doesn't want to see you right now, he was very specific about who he wanted to speak to first."

"Who?" Sarah asked, stepping closer to the phone.

"He is asking for Sarah Hayes, and he said he won't take his medication or talk to the lawyers until she is standing in the room with him," the doctor said, and then the line went dead, leaving the three of them in the silence of the burnt studio.

Sarah looked at Alex, and she saw the confusion and the old pain in his eyes as he realized that the "Lion" was still trying to control the game, even from a hospital bed in the woods.
