Chapter 79 –But Where Is The Bride?

My room door opened again, and I rolled my eyes, whipping around with fire blazing on my tongue, irritated and ready to cuss Jaxon out.
But I froze when I saw it was Katherine. She was wearing a regular floor-length dress that was designed to hide her baby bump, and it was doing just that.
She wasn't even one of my bridesmaids, nor was she my maid of honor. So on top of everything, I'll be standing next to women I've only met once or twice.
"What the hell happened in here?" I frowned at her.
"What? Nothing." I hoped she dropped whatever she was onto... I could tell just by the look of sympathy in her eyes where this conversation was going.
I turned back to the task at hand. This damn dress.
"I was on my way to your room when I saw Jaxon storming past. I called to him, and he didn't even answer." Katherine frowned, her eyes wandering off.
"I swear..." I ranted as I ruffled through the layers of the dress, "there was just a zipper somewhere here..."
"Are you sure this is what you want?" Katherine's voice was low, and she seemed timid, which was weird coming from her, as she was always bold.
My hands were still busy with the dress as Kathy's question echoed through my mind.
"Alex..." came Katherine. I hadn't noticed she was now infront of me, she too was holding onto the dress.
"Talk to me, babe, it's okay. You know I won't judge."
"It's not like I have a choice."
"Ofcourse you do."
"No, Katherine, I don't. This was always how it was meant to be‐ me marrying the love of my life." My lips quivered, and I went back to looking for the zipper.
I was on the verge of a crashout, any second now...
"Oh, babe. Not like this, not in this hideous dress, with this hideous makeup, with a bunch of stuck-ups that don't really know who you are."
I hadn’t noticed I was crying until her fingers came up to my face, a piece of tissue dabbing my tears away. I hadn’t even noticed when she went in her purse to get that piece of tissue.
I took a shaky breath and wheezed. Katherine pouted, her own eyes glossy with tears.
"This was my choice, and what's done is done. Whatever repercussions there are, I'll have to deal with them." I held my head up, refusing to cry for the rest of the day.
"I need to get into this dress already and get this over with." I laughed humorously.
"How bad can it be?" Katherine's eyes darted to the side, and her lips parted.
"Don't answer that." I shook my head.
Katherine held the dress up with the zipper that was hidden moments ago between her thumb and index finger.
"You have literally fifteen minutes before you go up to that altar."
I groaned as she pulled the zipper down.
"I need you to help me get into this dress." I pleaded with my best puppy eyes, something I saw Lucianna do that actually works.
"I know, that's why I'm here. They were gonna send that stylist back up here."
"Thank you, you're the best. I mean it." I pulled her into a quick hug, which was kinda awkward since the dress was between us.
When I pulled away, her smile began to slowly fade, her thoughts going elsewhere.
"I need to make a phone call, give me a sec," she abruptly announced, letting go of the dress, and I swore its weight tugged me downward a bit.
I audibly groaned, not bothering to hide my frustration.
"I'll be back, I promise. This won't take long." She called over her shoulder as she slipped out the room.
Katherine came back 7 minutes later. I'd managed‐ well, in all honesty, struggled, but managed‐ to get the dress halfway on.
My best friend was acting rather strange this time around as she approached.
"Is everything okay?" I turned to her, a bit concerned.
Her eyes widened, and she smiled with a dismissive wave of her hand.
"Yeah, just work stuff."
"You better not be planning to deliver any more sex toys." I warned, shooting her a playful glare.
"Oh, I see you got my gift." She grinned, a mischievous glint in her eyes.
I laughed with a shake of my head.

I stood outside at the beginning of the pathway that led to the garden where everyone was waiting. The trees stood tall, but the flowers, and plants were grown to waist length, and while I was obscured by plants and flowers, I could see a few glimpses between the trees of how packed the villa's garden was, and also how beautifully it was decorated. I've never seen a venue as breathtaking as this one, the theme screamed Easter with the beautiful pastel‐colored decorations and the natural colors of the flowers blending right in.
My heart was in my mouth as I stood where I was instructed to, waiting for that one tune I've heard so many times.
Any minute now...
"Miss?" I gasped, frightened, turning to my left to see a waiter holding a tray of empty champagne glasses. I found his bow tie cute... he seemed to be in his early twenties, not much younger than I am.
"Can I quickly get you a bottle of water or something? Are you alright?"
My mouth was agape for what felt like minutes. I hadn’t realized my hands were trembling.
"No. I'm fine. Thanks for the offer, though." I mustered a small smile, and he nodded before walking off in the direction of the house.
Before I got the chance to gather myself, the voices from the garden died down‐ and so did the clinking of glasses. Then the tune to Here Comes the Bride started playing from speakers hidden around the villa.
“Oh… this is it.” I swallowed, my heart hammering in my chest. My fingers tightened around the bouquet, gripping the stems so hard I could feel them begin to crunch beneath my hold.
Seconds passed, and I stood frozen, the scent of the flowers thick in the air.
I couldn’t move.
And the longer I stood there‐ unmoving, frozen like a statue, the more the nerves crept in. Sweat beaded along my temple. The material of the dress began to itch beneath the heat of the sun.
By now, I was supposed to be halfway down the path, visible to everyone. I could see Lucianna, my flower girl, standing to the side of the path in her light pink dress, waiting expectantly. I imagined all eyes were turned in this direction, waiting and watching, expecting to see me any second now... The music slowed.
This was the moment I was supposed to step forward to become visible, to walk down the aisle to where Jaxon‐ the man I loved dearly‐ was waiting.
My thoughts halted at a sound in the distance.
At first, I thought one of the speakers was malfunctioning. And for a split second, I almost laughed‐ imagining telling Jaxon that the universe was, in fact, cruel enough to mess up the speakers right as I was supposed to walk down the aisle.
But then I heard it again.
And again.
This time clearer as the bridal tune dragged slower and slower‐
VRUMMM
My entire body stilled.
Anticipation, fear, Giddiness? Something dangerously close to excitement. I couldn’t name it‐ just a chaotic soup of emotions‐ everything crashing through me at once.
The engine revved again, its sound cutting through everything and calling to me like a fucking siren at sea.
My head snapped toward the parking area, eyes scanning the rows of expensive cars belonging to my guests.
The speakers went quiet and I turned back towards the crowd, towards the garden where everyone sat waiting to watch me get married. My brows pulled together, my thoughts racing a mile per second. Then‐
VRUM
The sound was quieter this time, it even sounded closer. The music started again, faintly filling the space and in the distance, I could make out Jaxon’s mother by her dress and felt it then, someone was coming. Someone was about to walk down that path to come find me. But did I want them to come find me... frozen here?
Or ...will I‐ no... but..‐
"Fuck it."
My fingers loosened around the bouquet, a few flowers snapped free‐ hitting the pavement and like the petals that were being carried away by the wind, my feet led me away from the path I almost took, taking me in the direction of the parking lot instead.
Loud as ever, I could hear it now... its power unmistakable, the sound deliberate, each rev meant to draw my attention away from the mistake I ’d almost made, a fucking car made for a moment like this one.
And then I saw it....
A green Lamborghini I knew all too well.
Even if they chase us, they’ll never catch us. Not when we’re this fast–
