Epilogue
“Do you think they know?” Vera’s voice broke the quiet, her gaze fixed on the twins sparring below.
Zachary, standing beside her at the window, shook his head. “Not yet,” he said softly. “But they’re starting to feel it. Look at the way Luca fights—controlled, deliberate. And Alyss… she’s got that focus. It’s like they’re already aware, even if they don’t fully understand.”
Vera watched her children—Luca’s strength, Alyss’s precision. They were only twelve, yet there was a power inside them, a shared potential that felt both exciting and terrifying. “They’re not like the others,” she murmured. “They’re meant for something more, but I fear what it will do to them.”
Zachary sighed, leaning back slightly. “We knew this day would come, Vera. They’re bound to this world, just like we were. But they’re strong. Together, they’ll handle it.”
Down below, Luca let out a victorious shout as he disarmed Alyss with a sharp move, but she recovered quickly, giving him a playful shove. Their laughter echoed back up to their parents.
“It’s not just strength,” Vera said, her voice tight with emotion. “It’s the weight of what they’ll carry. Luca hides behind his bravado, and Alyss… she holds it all in. How do we prepare them for what’s to come?”
Zachary placed a hand on her shoulder, squeezing gently. “We’ll guide them, step by step. Just like our parents tried to guide us.” His eyes flicked back to the twins. “They’ll be ready when the time comes.”
Alyss looked up at them, eyes sharp, knowing. Luca followed her gaze, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. They might not have known the full extent of what awaited them, but they felt it.
“I hope you’re right,” Vera whispered, her heart heavy with the knowledge that her children’s futures were already written.
“We should tell them soon,” Vera said, her fingers gripping the edge of the windowsill. “They need to understand what they’re capable of, and what they’ll face. Keeping them in the dark only delays the inevitable.”
Zachary remained silent for a moment, watching as Luca playfully tackled Alyss to the ground, both of them laughing like any normal siblings would. But they weren’t normal—far from it.
“I know,” he finally replied, his voice low. “But we can’t force it, Vera. They’re still children. Let them have what little innocence they have left.”
“Innocence won’t protect them from what’s coming,” she said, turning to face him. Her eyes were fierce, filled with a mother’s worry. “We weren’t given that luxury.”
“And maybe that’s why we’re different,” Zachary countered, his tone calm but firm. “We had to grow up fast, fight wars before we were ready. But look where it got us.”
Vera sighed, rubbing her temples. “You’re right, but… it’s just hard, Zach. Knowing what’s inside them. Seeing how powerful they’re becoming.” She paused, her gaze softening as she looked out at their children again. “What if they’re not ready when the time comes?”
“Then we’ll make sure they are.”
As if sensing their parents’ attention, Alyss glanced up again, her sharp blue eyes locking with Vera’s. There was something unspoken in the way she held her gaze—an understanding, perhaps. Luca, oblivious to the tension, grinned and waved at them before returning to his playful sparring.
“They’re not as naïve as we think,” Zachary said, a slight smile tugging at his lips. “Alyss knows. She’s always known more than she lets on. And Luca… well, he’ll follow her lead, like he always does.”
“I just wish…” Vera’s voice trailed off. She didn’t finish the sentence, but Zachary knew. She wished they didn’t have to burden their children with the same responsibilities that had weighed on them for so long.
Suddenly, the door creaked open. Alyss stood in the doorway, her eyes narrowing in suspicion. “Are you two talking about us again?”
Vera smiled softly, trying to mask her concern. “What makes you think that?”
Alyss crossed her arms, raising a brow. “Because you’re always watching us like we’re going to explode or something.”
Luca popped his head around the corner, grinning mischievously. “Yeah, what’s the big secret?”
Zachary and Vera exchanged a glance. The time to tell them was fast approaching, whether they were ready or not.
Vera exhaled slowly, feeling the weight of the moment pressing down on her. She met Zachary’s eyes, and for a brief second, there was a silent agreement between them. They couldn’t keep delaying the truth. The children had a right to know what lay ahead.
“Come here,” Vera said softly, gesturing for Alyss and Luca to join them. The twins exchanged a glance, sensing the seriousness in their mother’s voice, and padded over to stand beside her.
Zachary moved closer, resting a hand on each of their shoulders. He knelt down to their level, looking them squarely in the eye. “There’s something you both need to know,” he began, his voice gentle but firm. “It’s about who you are—who we are as a family.”
Luca’s smile faded slightly, curiosity replacing his usual carefree demeanor. Alyss remained stoic, her eyes flicking between her parents as if she already knew this was coming.
“We’ve kept certain things from you,” Vera continued, kneeling beside Zachary. “Not because we didn’t trust you, but because we wanted to give you time. But that time is running out.”
“What do you mean?” Alyss asked, her voice steady but filled with the sharp edge of suspicion.
Zachary sighed, tightening his grip on Luca’s shoulder. “You’re both special. You’ve probably felt it by now—the power inside you. It’s the same power that your mother and I have, the same that’s tied to our past. And with that power comes responsibility.”
“Responsibility for what?” Luca asked, his voice cracking slightly, the weight of the conversation finally dawning on him.
Vera looked at him with soft, yet determined eyes. “To protect this world, just as we have. You come from a long line of people who’ve fought for peace, who’ve sacrificed more than you can imagine to ensure the future remains bright.”
Alyss bit her lip, processing the enormity of what they were being told. “So… we’re like you? We’re meant to fight, too?”
Zachary nodded. “Yes. But it’s not just about fighting. It’s about leading. It’s about making the right choices when the world needs you most.”
The silence that followed was thick with the weight of unspoken fears and hopes. Luca glanced at his sister, as if waiting for her reaction before forming his own. Alyss was quiet, her face a mask of thoughtfulness that belied her young age.
Finally, she spoke. “What if we’re not ready?”
Vera smiled, brushing a stray lock of hair from Alyss’ face. “You will be. And we’ll be here to help you, every step of the way.”
Luca, ever the more impulsive of the two, straightened up and grinned nervously. “Well, it sounds kinda cool… I mean, having powers and saving the world.”
Alyss shot him a look, but Zachary chuckled. “It’s more than cool, Luca. It’s a responsibility. One you’ll have to grow into.”
Alyss, still thoughtful, asked quietly, “But what if we fail? What if we can’t do what’s expected of us?”
Zachary exchanged a look with Vera, both of them remembering their own doubts, their own fears from years ago. “You won’t fail,” Zachary said softly. “Because you’ll have each other. Just like your mother and I had each other. And we’ll be with you, guiding you. Always.”
The twins didn’t respond immediately, but Vera could see the wheels turning in their minds. They were taking it all in—their destiny, the power they carried, and the weight of the world that would one day rest on their shoulders.
“We’ll be okay,” Alyss finally said, her voice firm. “We can do this.”
Luca, always quick to follow, nodded vigorously. “Yeah, we got this.”
Vera smiled, feeling a swell of pride as she looked at her children. They were young, but they were already so much stronger than she had ever imagined. And they would need that strength for the road ahead.
Zachary stood, offering a hand to Vera, who rose with him. “We’ll always be with you,” he repeated, his voice filled with love and certainty.
As they stood together as a family, the weight of their shared destiny hung in the air, but so did something else—hope. For the first time in a long while, Vera felt that glimmer of hope shining brightly. Their children would face the same challenges they had, but they wouldn’t be alone. And maybe, just maybe, the future they fought for would be worth it.
Together, they walked back toward the house, the setting sun casting long shadows behind them. But those shadows were far from ominous now. They were a reminder that darkness could always be overcome, so long as they stood united.
And the next generation, Alyss and Luca, would carry that legacy forward. Their story was just beginning.
