Mission
Mission
“Alright, let’s recap,” Max said, leaning over a rough map spread across the table in their camp. “We know Celeste has been targeting the tribes, using them to cover her tracks. We need to find Vera before she’s next.”
Zachary nodded, tracing a line with his finger. “I’ve been piecing together information from the survivors. Most of them spoke about a location deep in the mountains where Celeste has been spotted. If she’s got Vera, that’s likely where she’s keeping her.”
Gabriel, who had been silent, finally chimed in. “You think we can just waltz in there and grab her? Celeste won’t let us get that close without a fight.”
Max shot him a look. “We don’t have a choice, Gabriel. We can’t leave her in that situation.”
Gabriel frowned but didn’t argue further. Instead, he picked up a nearby knife and began sharpening it. “Let’s just be ready for anything.”
“Exactly,” Zachary said. “We need to be smart about this. The moment we step foot on her territory, we’ll be in danger. Celeste is cunning; we have to outsmart her.”
Max leaned back, taking a deep breath. “Okay, so what’s our approach? Stealth or an all-out assault?”
“Stealth,” Zachary replied quickly. “We need to find out what we’re up against first. If we create chaos, we could draw her attention away from Vera long enough to get her out.”
“Right,” Max said, his mind racing with possibilities. “But if we’re stealthy, we have to keep our voices down and stick to the shadows. Any noise could alert her guards.”
Zachary nodded. “We should split into pairs. Cover more ground that way. I can go with you, Max. Gabriel, you take the rear and watch for any surprises.”
“Great,” Gabriel muttered, still sharpening the knife. “Because surprises are exactly what I want to deal with.”
Max smirked, trying to lighten the mood. “Just think of it as a little adventure, Gabriel. Besides, we’ll make sure to keep the fun to a minimum.”
“Very funny,” Gabriel shot back, finally looking up from his work. “Let’s just keep our eyes peeled. I’m not about to let Celeste catch us off guard.”
As the group made their final preparations, Max couldn’t shake the feeling that they were stepping into a trap. The air was thick with tension, but they had no choice. They needed to save Vera.
—-
With the moon hanging low in the sky, casting an eerie glow over the forest, the trio moved silently through the underbrush. The sounds of the night surrounded them, making every rustle feel amplified.
“Stay low,” Zachary whispered, glancing over at Max. “We’re getting close.”
Max nodded, trying to stay focused. They’d already passed several signs of Celeste’s influence—burned-out villages and scattered tribes—each sight deepening his determination to rescue Vera.
“Do you think she knows we’re coming?” Max asked, keeping his voice barely above a whisper.
Zachary shrugged. “If she does, we’ll have to be quick. We need to take her by surprise.”
As they approached the base of the mountain, they could see a faint light flickering in the distance—likely a campfire. Gabriel gestured for them to halt, signaling for them to crouch behind some rocks.
“Looks like she has a camp set up,” Gabriel whispered, eyes narrowing. “How many do you think are there?”
“Hard to tell,” Zachary replied, squinting into the darkness. “But it doesn’t matter. We’ll need a distraction to draw them away from Vera.”
“Or we could go in silently and take them out one by one,” Max suggested, his heart racing. “That way, we minimize the risk of alerting Celeste.”
Gabriel shook his head. “That’s risky. If they’re as loyal to her as we think, we’d be outnumbered in no time.”
Before Max could respond, a sound broke the tension. Footsteps approached from their right, and the three of them instinctively melted deeper into the shadows.
“Did you hear that?” a voice called from the camp.
“Just the wind,” another voice replied. “But we should keep watch. Celeste wants Vera alive, and we can’t let anyone interfere.”
Max’s stomach twisted at the mention of Vera. They were running out of time.
“Let’s move,” Zachary whispered urgently. “We need to find out where they’re holding her. We can’t risk getting caught.”
As they slipped closer, the camp came into view. They could see figures moving around the flickering fire, shadows dancing against the rocks. Max felt a knot of fear form in his stomach as he realized just how dangerous this situation could become.
“Okay, we stick to the plan,” Zachary said, determination burning in his eyes. “We create a diversion, and then we go for Vera.”
Just then, the ground trembled slightly beneath them, and the low rumble of distant thunder echoed in the air. Max frowned, glancing up at the sky. “Weather’s turning. This could complicate things.”
“Focus,” Gabriel hissed, drawing their attention back. “We need to get closer.”
As they crept forward, tension mounted with each cautious step. Max could feel his heart racing, the anticipation crackling in the air. They were nearing the moment of truth, and every instinct screamed that something was about to go horribly wrong.
Max led the way, crouching low as they navigated through the dense underbrush, each step carefully calculated to avoid snapping twigs or rustling leaves. The glow of the campfire flickered ahead, illuminating the outlines of what looked like guards, their figures ominous against the flames.
“Stay sharp,” Max whispered, glancing back at Zachary and Gabriel. “We can’t afford to be careless now.”
Zachary nodded, his jaw set with determination. “Let’s get a closer look at those guards. They might have information about where Vera is.”
As they neared the edge of the camp’s perimeter, they found a thicket of bushes that provided enough cover to observe the camp without being seen. From their vantage point, they could hear snippets of conversation.
“Celeste wants to ensure the real Vera is kept hidden. We can’t let anyone know she’s here,” one guard said, his tone grave.
“Right. The moment someone finds out, we’ll be in deep trouble,” another replied, glancing nervously at the flickering shadows.
Max’s heart raced at the mention of Vera. She was here, somewhere close, and they needed to act fast. He glanced at Zachary, who was already scanning the area for potential escape routes.
“Okay, we need a distraction. Gabriel, you’re good at creating chaos,” Max said, suppressing a nervous grin. “What do you have in mind?”
Gabriel thought for a moment, then nodded toward a stack of supplies behind the guards. “If I can tip over those barrels, it’ll create a noise loud enough to draw their attention away from Vera. But it’ll need to be quick.”
“Perfect,” Zachary agreed. “Once they’re distracted, we’ll slip in and find her. Max, you stay on guard while we make the distraction.”
Max’s heart pounded in his chest. “Just make sure it’s loud enough to cover us.”
“Got it,” Gabriel said, his expression shifting to focus. “Ready?”
Zachary and Max nodded, tensing with anticipation. As Gabriel moved silently toward the barrels, they kept their eyes on the guards, who were still oblivious to their presence.
Gabriel crept closer, barely making a sound as he approached the precariously stacked barrels. With a swift movement, he kicked one of the lower barrels, sending it toppling over. It hit the ground with a loud crash, causing the guards to jerk around, startled.
“Hey! What was that?” one shouted, rushing toward the noise.
“Let’s check it out!” another guard replied, following closely behind.
“Now!” Max hissed, and without hesitation, he and Zachary dashed toward the camp, keeping low. They slipped through the chaos, narrowly avoiding detection as the guards’ attention was diverted.
As they entered the camp, Max’s heart raced with adrenaline. He could feel the weight of the moment pressing down on him. They needed to find Vera, and they needed to do it quickly.
“Where do we look first?” Zachary asked, scanning the area for signs of her.
“There!” Max pointed toward a makeshift tent in the back, its fabric fluttering slightly in the breeze. “That has to be it.”
As they approached the tent, the sounds of the guards still echoed behind them, but Max felt a rush of urgency pushing him forward. They couldn’t waste a moment.
“On three,” Zachary whispered, gripping the fabric of the tent flap. “One… two… three!”
They yanked the flap open and stepped inside, their hearts pounding as they searched the dimly lit space.
“Vera?” Max called out softly, his voice laced with anxiety.
To their surprise, the tent was empty, save for a few scattered supplies and a cot in the corner. Max felt his heart drop. “Where is she?”
“Maybe she’s been moved,” Zachary suggested, urgency creeping into his tone. “We need to keep looking.”
Suddenly, they heard shouts outside—the guards were starting to realize they’d been tricked. The tension in the air thickened as panic set in.
“Let’s get out of here,” Max urged, glancing back toward the entrance.
Just then, the sound of footsteps echoed from outside, and they exchanged worried glances.
“We can’t get caught now,” Zachary said, his voice barely above a whisper.
“We have to find her!” Max insisted, feeling the weight of their mission pressing heavily on him.
But as they prepared to leave the tent, Gabriel rushed in, breathing heavily. “They’re coming back! We need to hide—now!”
Without thinking, they ducked behind a stack of crates, hearts racing as they listened to the guards approach.
“What happened? Where’s the decoy?” one of the guards shouted, frustration evident in his tone. “We can’t let them get away!”
“Celeste will have our heads if she finds out we let them slip through our fingers,” another replied.
Max’s mind raced. They were running out of time, and the pressure was mounting. They needed to find Vera before Celeste realized they were there.
“Stay quiet,” Gabriel urged, his eyes darting around the tent as if searching for an escape route.
Just then, a faint sound echoed from outside—a voice, weak yet familiar. “Help… someone…”
Max’s heart stopped. That voice—it was Vera!
“Did you hear that?” he whispered, eyes wide with urgency. “She’s here!”
“We need to find her,” Zachary insisted, his determination renewed. “Let’s go!”
With a newfound resolve, they pushed aside their fear and crept out from behind the crates. As they moved toward the entrance, the guards’ voices grew louder, and the tension hung thick in the air.
“Quick!” Max urged. “We have to be fast!”
Just as they were about to step outside, the flap of the tent suddenly burst open. Max froze, his heart racing, as they were met with the sight of a guard standing there, eyes wide with shock.
“Hey!” the guard shouted, raising his weapon.
“Run!” Max yelled, and in an instant, they bolted back into the shadows, hearts pounding as they scrambled to evade the approaching danger. The thrill of the chase ignited their adrenaline, and they raced deeper into the camp, desperate to save Vera before it was too late.
