Chapter 24 A Bad Day
Cara went to work in her car, trying to calm herself down before arriving at work. She had a conference meeting and she didn't want her bad mood to affect her business.
She parked in the parking lot and remained there for more than a minute.
‘What the hell did he take me for?’ She asked herself. ‘How dare he think I am miserable without him? The only reason I am feeling miserable is because I have been seeing him too much lately!’
Chris really did think lowly of her. He had expected her to burst into tears and fall into his arms, apologizing for their divorce and kissing his feet in gratitude for wanting to give them a second chance.
He refused to accept the fact that he was a terrible husband and a terrible person and that was what led to their divorce. He refused to take the blame for what he did wrong and expected her to fall at his feet and apologize.
More importantly, he hated the fact that she was spending time with hot stuff--Romeo--and wanted her to apologize for cheating on him with such a person.
Sure, Romeo was handsome and rich but Chris was sure that was all there was to it! Compared to him, he saw himself as an equally rich and handsome man with a good personality and a better understanding of women.
So he didn't understand why Cara had behaved the way she did when she left him. But he told himself she didn't understand what he was telling her and he needed to break it down a little more. Tell her his point in a lame man's language. Maybe then she would understand.
Cara hated the fact that seeing him alone changed her mood and impacted the way she acted. “From now on,” she said to herself, hands gripping onto the steering wheel. “Let's keep a leash on our anger and make sure to steer clear of him and Jessica.”
With a nod of affirmation, she took her bag and stepped down from the car.
After the conference meeting, she started towards her office hoping for some time alone with her emotions. Some time to think properly and clear her head.
“Do I have anything important to tend to for the next one hour?” Cara asked her personal assistant. “If not then I would like you to clear my schedule for the next hour.”
“Hmm… I don't think there is anything important for the next two hours actually. Apart from the dinner plans with the investors at six today, there's nothing else of that much importance.” Her personal assistant explained to her.
Cara nodded her head. “Okay, then I'd like you to–”
“Ma'am, you can't go in there especially when you don't have an appointment. Try to make an appointment and come back next time.”
Cara heard the receptionist saying. She peered forward and noticed another woman standing at the reception.
“You don't understand! I don't need your permission to go in there!” The other woman stated firmly.
The voice was too familiar to Cara's ears. The hair at the back of her neck stood when she realized who the owner of the voice was.
“Ma'am! Ms Smith is not even in there at the moment! She is at a conference and might not be back for a while!” The receptionist was starting to lose her grip on her cool.
“Then I will wait!”
“Jessica?” Cara's brow arched as she called out to the woman that was arguing with her receptionist.
Jessica turned around at hearing Cara's voice, a smug smile playing on her face. “Oh my dear Cara, finally, I have gotten a hold of you.”
“What are you doing here, Jessica?” Cara frowned.
“Oh ease up, darling. I'm just here to talk. Let's do it in your office.” Jessica stood with her hands pressed on her hips and a devilish grin plastered on her face. “Come on now, don't be shy. If your office isn't that pretty and presentable, I won't say anything bad. We are friends after all.”
Cara scoffed a laugh. She turned to face her receptionist. “It's alright, I'll see to it that she never comes here to disturb the peace of this building again.”
Jessica chuckled softly and followed Cara as she walked into her office.
Sitting opposite each other, Cara wore a casual expression on her face. Her day had already been cursed by seeing Chris so it was no surprise that it would be a bad day all through. Jessica was proof of that.
Jessica looked around the office, more than a little surprised at how the place was neat and exquisite. She had expected shabby and small but it was far from that. Literally the opposite.
‘How did she get enough money to make this place look so pretty and expensive?’ She wondered, unable to hide the look of surprise on her face.
“What do you think you are doing?” Cara kept her tone firm as she asked.
Jessica finally came back to her senses and looked only at Cara. “What do you mean by that question?”
“You know very well what I mean! Coming in here and disrupting my work? What exactly is your plan?” Cara strictly questioned.
“Can't your ex best friend come to see you with a good heart?” Jessica was still smiling as she spoke. A smile that kept taunting Cara.
“Oh cut the crap and get to the point. I'm not falling for the whole ex best friend bullsht.”
Jessica nodded her head. “You're right. I didn't come here to say hello or spend time with you, I'm too busy for all of that nonsense.” The smile on her face had disappeared and she glared daggers at Cara. “I'm here to give you… a warning.”
