Chapter 23 Pick Up Your Car
Cara threw on her clothes and shoes as she got ready for work. Her hair dangled in a ponytail behind her while a black skirt wrapped around her curves. A white long sleeved shirt over her shoulders with a black red bottom heel.
As she reached for her bag, her phone started to ring and she felt anger dawn upon her as she saw the name Chris on the screen.
She didn't know why she hadn't deleted his number after all these months.
Taking a breath to calm herself down, she answered the call in a stern voice. “What is it?”
“You still have my number saved on your phone.” He said with a calm tone that was highlighted by surprise.
“Is that what you called to check?” She angrily questioned him. “Because if that's it, I want you to know that some of us are busy– too busy to be playing games–”
“Your car is ready, would you like me to deliver it to your address?” Chris cut her off asking.
She swallowed her anger and responded. “No, tell me where to pick it up and I'll be there.”
“Okay,” he responded. “I'll text you the address. Try to be there quickly cause I have to get to work, okay?”
She scoffed at his words and hung up. “Like I don't have to be at work.” She muttered to herself. Picking up her bag, she hung it on her shoulder and left her apartment.
Arriving at the given address, she peered into the distance trying to find Chris wherever he might be in the large open field but didn't find him. He could have been anywhere.
Opening her bag, she reached for her phone to call him and–
“You're here on time.”
She flinched as a voice muttered close to her ear. Turning around, she saw Chris standing behind her with a smile on his face. Her eyes rolled skyward.
“My car, where is it?” She begrudgingly questioned him.
“It's in the parking lot behind us. But I called you here because I have something to discuss with you.” He confessed.
“I don't have anything to discuss with you.” She made to walk away but he held her hand.
“Please?” He pleaded. “Just hear me out, huh? Just spare me a few minutes from your time. It's all I'm asking for.” His eyes sparkled with sincerity.
She sighed and slipped her hand out of his hold. “What do you want?” She folded her arms below her breast as she asked him.
His lips spread into a slight smile. “I knew my Cara was still in there somewhere.” He cleared his throat and continued. “Cara, do you think what happened to us was right?”
“What are you talking about?” Her eyes squinted.
“I'm talking about everything Cara, everything! Everything we had, everything we were, everything we had been and could have been… Do you think it is right for us to just throw it all away?” His eyes shone apologetically. “We shouldn't do that to ourselves.”
She broke out in a hysterical laugh. “Really Chris? This is what you wanted to say? I don't have time for this nonsense. My car keys, hand them over to me.” She stretched her hand forward to receive them.
He let out a heavy sigh. “Cara, we shouldn't be doing this to each other. I know you are miserable without me, I can see it on your face! What man would want to take you when you can't give them children? Especially now that you have been married once! Think about it!”
“Shut your mouth, Chris! Just shut the fck up okay?” Her eyes widened as she growled at him. With a scoff, she continued. “Don't you even feel guilt at all? Are you even human? Do you have any emotions?” Her thin brow arched subconsciously as she asked.
“Yes, yes and yes!” He responded firmly. “Cara, I wouldn't be offering you a second chance if I didn't feel any of those things! When I saw you yesterday morning, I could tell how miserable you were just by looking at your face! At the club, I noticed you almost broke into tears just seeing me with another woman. I see things, Cara and I see how terrible you are holding up.
“I know that our divorce was instigated by the way you were feeling then. Your friend hurt you by being with me so you felt betrayed. Now that you regret it, all you had to do was say so and I would have done something about it.”
Tears threatened to fall down Cara's eyes but she managed to fight them back. Staring into the distance, she took a second to calm herself before looking back at Chris.
“You really think Jessica is the reason we got a divorcé?” She scoffed a laugh. “You are such a fool. An arrogant fool! You should have never said anything if this was the nonsense you wanted to spill. I looked miserable? Really? Would a miserable person be at a club dancing with another man?
“If there is a single look of fatigue on my face then it is because of working so hard. I don't even remember you, Chris. I am too busy making my family proud and spending them with other people to even remember you. I don't even have a second–a moment! To grieve our divorce, to remember you and feel sad, no, I don't even have the time.”
He sighed. “Cara, look–”
“Give me my fcking car keys.” She managed to say the words nicely even though her hands were trembling with anger.
“Cara–”
“Give me my fcking car keys!!!” She exploded at him.
Chris’ eyes widened in surprise before he calmed himself. He reached into his pocket and took out the keys then dropped it on her outstretched hand.
“You're not seeing my point here–”
She walked away, hitting him with her shoulders to push him out of her way.
Chris sighed. “I'll make you see my point.” He muttered to himself.
