Chapter 67

Chapter 67

Iris Bennett's POV

When the sun hit me, I finally dragged myself up.

"You look exhausted, Adrian." I walked over to the sofa and looked at him lying there.

His eyes were bloodshot, as if he hadn't slept all night. Jocelyn would probably notice something was wrong soon.

"Just say it's because of the recent vampire situation."

"Alright, don't worry, I'll remember." I nodded. Jocelyn was so perceptive—we couldn't show any cracks.

"But I think we should probably stay together. She's very sensitive and will definitely sense something's off."

"I thought you didn't want to be around me?" Adrian turned his head, puzzled.

"I don't, but we won't be together much longer anyway. Might as well give ourselves a decent ending." I answered without thinking.

I would still feel pain because of him, but I wouldn't show it anymore. Since he wouldn't choose me, there was no point in any of this.

"What did you say?" Adrian's voice suddenly rose.

"Are you that eager to leave my pack?"

"It's nothing. The important thing is not to delay Mrs. Stuart's checkup." I answered coldly.

Since it was just the two of us here, I didn't need to hide my true feelings anymore. I looked up at him and suddenly laughed.

I hadn't wanted to fight with Adrian, but look at what he was saying!

"I'm just stating facts. Isn't this what you wanted? Don't forget—you were the one who chose to bring Zoe back at that moment!"

But he said nothing, just darkened his face and turned away.

Why did I have to bear all of this?

I couldn't control myself and burst into tears.

I hadn't done anything wrong. As Luna, I'd never made a single mistake. Even if the pack members didn't want me as their Luna, they couldn't find fault with anything I'd done.

From the beginning, Adrian was the one who wanted to break our mate bond.

He was the one who caused rumors by being ambiguous with Zoe. If anyone had damaged the pack's reputation, it was him. And he was probably the one who refused to release the footage that would clear my name of Zoe's false accusations.

But why was Adrian still angry now? I didn't understand at all! Everything was under his control—what more could he want?

At this point, we probably wouldn't even remain friends after breaking the mate bond.

The only thing I'd done wrong in all of this was falling in love with him. If I hadn't loved him, none of this would have happened.

Adrian stepped forward and reached out to wipe the tears from my face. I tried to dodge, but he forcefully grabbed my chin.

I was forced to look up at him.

"Let me go!" I choked out, shouting with all my strength.

"Why are you crying?" Adrian's voice was full of confusion.

Did he really not understand at all?

My emotions spiraled even further out of control. I opened my mouth but couldn't say a word. My chest heaved violently as I desperately tried to recall the good times with Adrian, trying to pull myself out of this situation.

I didn't need to endure this much longer! Once I left Adrian, all of this would be over.

"I'm sorry." His words sounded sincere, but he didn't understand anything.

He just wanted me in a better mood when we saw his mother.

"Don't worry, I'll pull myself together." I answered quietly.

"Like you, I don't want her to be upset."

But as I spoke, tears nearly spilled over again uncontrollably. I lowered my head, avoiding his gaze.

He turned and pushed open the door.

"Let's go. We should see her. She's been waiting for us."

I hurried after him.

The moment we left the room, I automatically reached out and linked my arm through his. I smiled gently, looking up at Adrian's face.

This might be the last time we'd be this intimate. I didn't want any regrets.

When we entered the room, Adrian's mother was looking at a photo album. When she heard us, she looked up. The joy on her face turned to concern the moment she saw me.

"Sweetheart! What's wrong?" She looked at me worriedly and pulled me into her arms.

"It's nothing, Mrs. Stuart. I'm fine now." I smiled in response, but being in her embrace made me want to cry even more.

"I hope your relationship can improve, I really do. I can feel it—there's too much left unsaid between you two." She sighed, her hands resting gently on my back.

She spoke so earnestly, as if she'd already seen through everything.

"It's just the vampire situation, Mom." Adrian's voice was gentler than before.

"She's worried about Silvermoon Pack."

"I just hope you both know what you want." She finally just held my hand. I looked up at her and noticed her other hand was holding Adrian's.

She brought our hands close together but ultimately didn't make them touch.

"Adrian, your father and I weren't always in love. We had conflicts too—we even missed each other at times. That's exactly why I know how difficult this is."

"Of course, Mrs. Stuart." I nodded. I'd never been as clearheaded as I was now.

All I wanted now was to take care of my baby and leave Bloodridge Pack. I didn't need anything else.

"I understand, I—" Adrian's voice sounded hesitant. His unfinished words were cut off by his phone ringing.

He glanced at it and quickly hung up.

It must have been Zoe calling—otherwise he could have answered it here. I pretended not to notice and stayed sitting beside Adrian's mother.

"Don't worry, it's just a checkup." I smiled reassuringly.

"Just like all the other times. Once you recover, you'll be able to do whatever you want."

When that time came, I'd still visit this pack occasionally to see her. That was why I didn't want things with Adrian to get too ugly.

"But if I recover, I'm afraid you'll disappear from this pack the very next day." She stopped smiling and looked up at me.

"That's how it is, isn't it, Iris?"

My body trembled slightly. I looked up at her, struggling to control my expression.

I couldn't answer that question.
