Ninety Two

Ninety Two
The council chamber was tense, dimly lit by flickering candles that cast long, uneasy shadows across the stone walls. Lira stood at the center, her hands glowing faintly with crimson energy, the ritual circle etched into the floor glowing with the same intensity. Around her, Morwen chanted in a low, dangerous rhythm, her voice pulling threads of ancient magic from the very air. Council members watched with a mix of fear and anticipation, some whispering, others glaring, desperate to see how the impossible would unfold.

Valen stood close to Lira, tense, his eyes scanning every shadow. “Are you ready for this?” he asked softly, though he already knew the answer.

“I have to be,” Lira replied, her voice steady, though her hands trembled slightly. “This is the only way Ezra can come back. We have to do it now, or everything falls apart.”

Morwen raised her hands, the shadows in the chamber coiling around her like living things. “Focus, all of you,” she hissed. “Every bit of life, every thread of power, channel it toward the anchor. If even a fraction falters, he won’t return fully… or he’ll be lost again.”

Lira took a deep breath and began chanting, her Ashblood words echoing through the hall, mingling with Morwen’s dark tone. The circle flared, its light brightening, then darkening, pulsing like a heartbeat. Around the edges, the council members could feel the air thicken, the temperature drop. Even the walls seemed to hum with the raw energy being drawn into the anchor.

“Now!” Morwen’s voice rang sharp, and Lira poured her power into the center. The magic coalesced into a swirling vortex of darkness and crimson light. Shadows twisted and writhed, and a low, mournful wail echoed from the center of the circle.

A figure began to take shape…tall, powerful, and unmistakably Ezra…but his presence was different. Darker. Stronger. There was a weight in his gaze, a depth of memory and experience that hadn’t been there before. The chamber’s air shifted, thick with his energy, making even the council members step back instinctively.

Lira felt her heart leap as the last threads of the ritual snapped into place, and the figure solidified. Ezra opened his eyes. They were the same dark, stormy eyes she remembered, but something more dangerous lingered in them. Yet beneath that shadow, there was recognition.

“Lira…” His voice was low, hoarse, but filled with warmth and something raw that made her shiver. “I… have missed you.”

Her chest tightened as she stepped forward, trembling slightly. “Ezra…” she whispered, reaching for him.

He took a step toward her, his gaze never leaving hers. “I remember everything. You… all of you. Every choice, every battle, every betrayal… every victory.” His eyes flicked briefly to Valen, who had kept a steady hand on his sword but now let it drop, relief and awe crossing his features.

The council members murmured nervously, some leaning forward, others retreating as Ezra’s presence radiated power that demanded attention. Morwen’s lips twitched, unreadable, though her hands never wavered from the finalizing gestures of the ritual.

Lira’s hands rose to touch his chest, feeling the raw strength of him, the pulse of life and magic flowing from him. “You… you’re back,” she said, her voice cracking slightly.

He nodded slowly, a faint, dark smile forming on his lips. “Back… and I can feel everything. I see what’s been done, what’s been lost. I see you… surviving, fighting, leading.” His eyes softened as they met hers again. “I’m here now. And I’m not leaving.”

Valen let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding and stepped back, giving them space, though his eyes remained vigilant, knowing Ezra’s return would shift the balance entirely.

Morwen stepped forward, her voice smooth and measured. “The ritual is complete. The Prince walks among you once more. But beware… he is changed. More than any of you imagined.”

Ezra’s gaze swept across the room, stopping briefly on the council members. His voice was calm but carried a subtle, dangerous edge. “And those who think they can challenge me, or her… know this: I am not the same man you left behind. And neither is she.”

Lira felt a thrill and a shiver run through her at his words. She stepped closer, resting her forehead against his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart, alive and whole, but tempered with shadows.

The chamber seemed to exhale as the ritual’s power settled, leaving behind only the quiet hum of magic and the weight of a prince returned. The council realized, in that instant, that the game had changed….and the darkness of Ezra’s return promised that nothing would ever be the same again.

The council chambers were silent for a long moment, the air thick with tension. Then, almost reluctantly at first, the oldest members stepped forward. They bowed slightly, though their eyes were wary, scanning Ezra like a predator sizing up a rival.

“Prince Ezra,” Lucien said, his voice smooth but cautious, “we… welcome you back.”

Ezra’s gaze didn’t soften. He held the air of someone who had returned from death itself, changed and tempered by loss and shadow.

“Thank you,” he said, his voice low but steady. “But understand this…welcome is not forgiveness. Every choice you’ve made in my absence has consequences.”

Thorne, the wolf king, stepped forward, his massive frame tense. “We did what we thought necessary,” he said, trying to keep his voice calm. “The council…”

“You acted without me,” Ezra cut him off sharply, his eyes dark and unwavering. “And you thought I wouldn’t notice. That I wouldn’t see every move, every plan.”

Lucien shifted uneasily. “We…We acted to preserve order…”

Ezra’s eyes flicked to Lira, standing close by his side, her presence a silent warning to anyone who dared question him. He let the council’s murmurs hang in the air, his calm fury more dangerous than any shouting or threat.

“You see her,” he said finally, his voice softer but edged with steel, “she stands because of me. And she stands because I allow her to. None of you would survive my absence, and none of you will threaten her while I live.”

The council swallowed hard. Even Lucien, who had spent centuries trying to manipulate or humiliate Ezra, kept his mouth shut, realizing that the balance of power had shifted irrevocably.

Valen stepped slightly forward, watching Ezra’s every move, ready to intervene if needed, but also silently impressed by the prince’s calm dominance.

Ezra’s gaze swept the room one more time. “I am back,” he said, his tone carrying the weight of finality, “and I will not tolerate betrayal. Any of you who question me… or her… will answer to me first, and mercilessly.”

A hush fell over the council chamber. The older members bowed once more, deeper this time, as if acknowledging the shift in power they could no longer resist.

Lira, standing beside Ezra, allowed herself a small, proud smile. She had fought and survived without him, but now he was back… and together, they were unstoppable.

Ezra’s eyes softened briefly, just enough to let her know that he trusted her, and together they turned to face the council fully, two forces bound by blood, power, and purpose, ready to reclaim what was theirs.

The council, for the first time in centuries, realized they were no longer the hunters.. they were the hunted.
