One hundred and Four
One hundred and Four
The next night, the penthouse was quiet. The city below shimmered in soft lights, unaware of the lingering unease that coiled in its rulers’ hearts. Lira sat at the edge of the balcony, knees drawn up, the wind tugging at her hair. She had tried to shake the visions from her mind during the day, but now, with darkness falling again, the whispers returned…soft, sinister, impossible to ignore.
She saw him first in the shadows of the hall as she turned toward the living room. Ezra. But something was… different. His posture, relaxed and casual, shouldn’t have been threatening, but the way his eyes caught the candlelight…red glimmers, fleeting, just at the edges of perception… made her stomach tighten.
“Ezra,” she called softly.
He looked up, blinking, and for a moment, he was himself… soft, warm, the man who had stood with her through centuries of chaos. But the next moment, the glimmer returned, just for a heartbeat, enough to make her inhale sharply.
“Lira,” he said, voice low and commanding, almost predatory. “You’re awake late.”
“I… couldn’t sleep,” she said, trying to sound casual, though her pulse raced. “Had… bad dreams again.”
He approached slowly, almost imperceptibly, the dark aura around him intensifying as he moved. His shadow stretched across the balcony floor like liquid night. “Dreams?” he asked, stopping just short of her. “Or warnings?”
Lira stiffened. “I don’t know,” she admitted. “But it felt… like you were there. And not… you. A darker version. You weren’t… kind.”
Ezra’s eyes narrowed, but not in anger. In curiosity. And something else… something unreadable. “Dark,” he murmured. “What did I do?”
“You…” She hesitated, trying to choose her words. “You were cruel. Ruthless. You were… willing to destroy everything, even me, to get what you wanted.”
The wind shifted. He leaned closer, the heat of his body brushing hers without touching. “And yet, here I am,” he said, voice low, smooth, almost teasing. “Alive. Whole. Beside you. Did I frighten you, Ashblood?”
“Yes,” she admitted, heart racing, trembling slightly….not from fear, exactly, but from the raw intensity of him. “And I don’t know why. You’re… you. But not. I can’t explain it. I… I can’t tell what’s real.”
He crouched slightly, his hand hovering just above hers, not touching, teasing her nerves. “Reality is…” He tilted his head, eyes dark and glittering, “…what we choose it to be. You’re scared because you’ve glimpsed the edge of me… the part that the world, and even I, rarely see.”
Lira’s breath caught. She felt the pull of him, magnetic and dangerous. “Ezra… you’re scaring me. I….”
He cut her off, voice dropping to a whisper. “Good. Fear keeps you alive. Awareness keeps you sharp. And yet…” His fingers finally brushed her arm, light as a feather, sending shivers down her spine. “…even knowing the danger, you stay. You never run from me, Lira.”
“I… I can’t,” she admitted, voice trembling. “I don’t want to.”
He leaned closer still, lips just brushing her temple, breath hot. “And that’s why I trust you,” he murmured. “Because even when I show what I could be, you don’t flee. You see me… all of me. And you stay.”
For a moment, the darkness of the visions lifted….not entirely, but enough for Lira to let herself breathe again. Yet the seed of unease remained. Ezra’s touch, so real, so warm, could not erase the shadow she had seen in her dreams, and she could feel it lurking beneath his calm exterior.
“We should be careful,” she whispered, eyes scanning the penthouse. “The Siphon is gone… but threats are still out there. Morwen, the council…”
Ezra straightened slightly, voice firm. “Yes. But tonight, that’s not what I’m worried about. You.”
“I’m fine,” she tried to assure him, though her heart raced.
He stepped closer again, capturing her hand in both of his, pulling her just slightly against him. “You’re not fine. Not after what you’ve seen. And you won’t be, not completely. But…” He brushed a strand of hair from her face, thumb stroking her cheek, “…that doesn’t mean I’ll leave you to it.”
She swallowed, heat rising not just from fear but from desire, confusion, and relief. “I… I don’t want to lose you,” she admitted, the words raw.
“You won’t,” he said simply, but there was weight behind it….centuries of survival, battles fought and won, and power amassed. “I’m here. Always.”
The wind tugged again at the curtains, shadows dancing across the walls. And as Lira leaned into him, resting her forehead against his chest, she realized something she hadn’t fully allowed herself to admit: the darker visions of Ezra may never fully disappear, but so long as he was here, so long as he stayed tethered to her, she could face them.
Outside, the city lay quiet, the night holding its breath. And in the penthouse, one of the few safe places left in a world of shadows, Lira felt the fragile peace settle around them…for now.
But deep in the back of her mind, the whisper lingered: even a man who had returned from the void, even a prince of shadows and fire, could hide darkness that even love could not fully reach.
And she knew, with a cold certainty, that the nightmares were not done.
