Chapter 15 The First Lie Exposed
The room in the old Kane property felt colder after the words were spoken.
“She was part of something that could destroy it.”
And then—
“The kind that got her killed.”
Aria Monroe stood still for a moment, absorbing the weight of it.
Not breaking.
Not reacting emotionally.
But calculating.
Because grief had long since stopped being her first response.
“What exactly did my mother uncover?” she asked calmly.
The man in front of her studied her carefully, as if measuring whether she was ready for the answer.
Then he stepped aside slightly.
On the table behind him lay a sealed black box.
“I kept this for years,” he said. “Because I wasn’t sure who could be trusted with it.”
Aria walked closer.
“Why give it to me now?”
The man’s expression tightened. “Because someone else is already moving.”
A pause.
“Someone inside the Kane system is erasing everything connected to your mother again.”
Aria’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Again?”
That word mattered.
The man nodded slowly. “Yes. This isn’t the first cleanup.”
Silence dropped between them.
Aria looked at the box but didn’t touch it yet.
“Who ordered the first one?” she asked.
The man exhaled quietly.
“That’s where the lie begins.”
\---
Inside the Kane mansion, Adrian Kane stood in the study, watching the same live feed from the hidden device placed in the West Wing.
Lucas Brand was beside him.
“She’s inside with him,” Lucas said.
Adrian didn’t respond immediately.
His eyes remained fixed on Aria’s image.
Calm.
Focused.
Unshaken.
Lucas hesitated. “We should intervene.”
Adrian’s voice was low. “Not yet.”
Lucas frowned. “Sir, if she learns too much—”
Adrian interrupted quietly. “She already has.”
A pause.
Then Lucas asked carefully, “Then what are we waiting for?”
Adrian’s expression tightened slightly.
“For confirmation,” he said.
\---
Back in the West Wing, Aria finally touched the box.
It was heavier than it looked.
She opened it slowly.
Inside were documents.
Old.
Faded.
But still readable.
Her eyes moved quickly across the pages.
Financial records.
Meeting logs.
Names.
Then she stopped.
Richard Kane.
Her breath slowed slightly.
Next to his name—
Nina Gray.
And another signature.
Unknown.
Aria’s fingers tightened slightly on the paper.
“This doesn’t prove anything,” she said quietly.
The man nodded. “Look at page three.”
She turned it.
And froze.
A signed agreement.
Project ECLIPSE.
Classified.
Coordinated between Kane Holdings and external partners.
At the bottom—
Nina Gray’s signature.
And a termination clause dated two weeks before her death.
Aria looked up sharply. “This says she agreed to end the project.”
The man shook his head. “Read the annotation.”
Aria looked again.
Her eyes narrowed.
The clause had been altered.
Not erased.
Altered.
A second handwriting layered over the original.
“Subject terminated due to breach of confidentiality.”
Aria’s voice dropped. “This is falsified.”
The man nodded slowly. “Yes.”
A pause.
Then he added,
“And the person who approved that final statement is still inside Kane leadership.”
Silence.
Heavy.
Complete.
\---
Back at the mansion, Lucas was pacing slightly.
“This is getting out of control,” he said.
Adrian remained still.
Lucas continued, “If she brings that information back—”
“She will,” Adrian said.
Lucas stopped. “Then everything we’ve protected—”
“Was never protected,” Adrian interrupted.
Lucas frowned. “Sir?”
Adrian’s gaze remained fixed on the screen.
“This system was built on a lie,” he said quietly.
A pause.
Then he added,
“And she just found the first crack.”
\---
In the West Wing, Aria closed the box slowly.
Her expression had changed now.
Not emotional.
Not shocked.
Focused.
Controlled.
“Why show me this?” she asked.
The man hesitated.
Then replied, “Because you are the only one who can force them to admit it.”
Aria looked at him directly. “And what if I don’t want to force anything?”
A faint, sad smile crossed his face.
“You already started,” he said.
A pause.
Then he added,
“The moment you walked into the Kane mansion.”
Silence.
Aria didn’t deny it.
Because deep down, she already knew.
Nothing about her entry into this world had been random.
Not the contract.
Not the marriage.
Not even Adrian Kane.
Everything had been placed.
Arranged.
Or prepared.
She turned slightly.
“And Adrian?” she asked quietly.
The man’s expression changed slightly.
“He is not your enemy,” he said carefully.
Aria narrowed her eyes. “But he is connected.”
The man didn’t deny it.
That was enough.
\---
Back at the mansion, Adrian finally stood.
Lucas looked at him immediately.
“What are you going to do?” Lucas asked.
Adrian’s eyes darkened slightly.
“She’s no longer just searching,” he said quietly.
Lucas frowned. “Then what is she doing?”
Adrian’s voice lowered.
“She’s uncovering the first truth.”
A pause.
Then he added,
“And once that truth is exposed… there is no returning to how things were.”
\---
In the West Wing, Aria stood alone now.
The man had stepped out, leaving her with silence and answers she didn’t fully trust yet.
But one thing was clear.
Her mother hadn’t just been involved.
She had been part of something bigger.
And someone had lied about how it ended.
Aria closed her eyes briefly.
When she opened them again, something had shifted inside her.
Not fear.
Not confusion.
But direction.
“If this is the first lie,” she whispered, “then I will find the rest.”
Outside, the wind moved through the abandoned property.
And far away in the Kane mansion…
Adrian Kane watched in silence.
Because now he understood clearly.
Aria Monroe was no longer just reacting to the past.
She was rewriting its exposure.
And the truth she was walking toward…
was no longer safe for anyone.
