Chapter 23: So Thats What You Are

Chapter 23: So Thats What You Are
Chapter Twenty-Three: So That’s What You Are

POV: Noah Hart

He was used to whispers.

But this—this was different.

They weren’t whispering anymore.

They were watching him like he’d walked into the building naked, wearing Elias Voss’s name on his skin.

The elevator doors opened to the executive floor, and Noah stepped out like he always did: head high, posture perfect, heart pounding.

He knew something had shifted.

Yesterday, it was a quiet warning. A red-inked “Careful” in a manila envelope.

Today, it was a public reckoning.

He passed by a glass-walled meeting room. Jared Hale sat inside with three department heads — laughing, but not with his eyes.

When Jared saw him, he didn’t look away this time.

He smiled.

And that smile said everything.

So that’s what you are, Hart.

Noah swallowed and kept walking.

But the moment he sat down at his desk, his phone buzzed with a message.

UNKNOWN: Break room. 5 minutes. Come alone.

His stomach dropped.

He stared at the screen.

He could ignore it. He should ignore it.

Instead, he stood and walked.

The break room was mostly dark, the shades drawn, the motion lights slow to flicker on.

Noah stepped in.

Someone was already waiting.

Caitlyn Rivers, Marketing Director. Young, ambitious, deadly in heels.

She didn’t look at him at first. Just sipped her coffee and stared out the window like she had all the time in the world.

“You wanted to see me?”

She turned.

Smile sharp.

“No, you wanted to be seen. I’m just giving you the attention you begged for.”

Noah blinked. “Excuse me?”

She set her coffee down. “It’s always the quiet ones, isn’t it? Little assistant, good with calendars and coffee orders. Suddenly cozy with the CEO.”

Noah stepped back. “Whatever you think—”

“I know what I think.” Her voice was low. Vicious. “And so does everyone else now. Elias Voss doesn’t share power. Not unless he’s sharing his bed.”

The slap of it landed clean.

Noah’s throat tightened, but he didn’t look away.

“You done?”

“No,” Caitlyn said. “Because I worked my ass off to get where I am. I earned it. And you? You let him fuck you into a corner office.”

Noah’s voice was quiet, deadly calm. “You have no idea what’s between us.”

Caitlyn stepped closer. “Don’t I? Because I see what’s coming. And when he decides you’re inconvenient, he’ll fold you back into the filing cabinet like every other disposable asset.”

Noah stood straighter.

Then smiled.

“You know the difference between you and me, Caitlyn?”

She didn’t respond.

“I never needed to be noticed. And he saw me anyway.”

He walked out before she could speak.

Back at his desk, his hands were still trembling.

He wanted to scream. To cry. To run.

But he didn’t.

He did what he always did.

He worked.

At 3:47 p.m., Elias texted.

E.VOSS: Meeting room C. Bring your tablet.

When Noah walked in, Elias looked up from the table.

His expression shifted the second he saw Noah’s face.

“What happened?”

“Nothing,” Noah said.

“Noah.”

He sat across from him. “They’re talking.”

Elias nodded once. “Let them.”

“It’s not just talk anymore.”

Elias studied him for a long moment.

Then reached over and took Noah’s hand — not hidden, not secret.

“Tell me who.”

Noah hesitated.

“Caitlyn.”

Elias’s eyes darkened.

“I’ll handle it,” he said.

“No.”

Elias blinked.

“I don’
t want to be protected like I’m fragile,” Noah said, voice raw. “I want to earn the right to stand beside you. And I will.”

A pause.

Then Elias leaned in, fingers brushing Noah’s wrist.

“You already did.”
