Chapter 139 AN UNEXPECTED INVITATION

Chapter 139 AN UNEXPECTED INVITATION
The face I saw belonged to the guy I had met on the poisoned yoghurt date. He was someone Alex had invited.

I remained natural as I interacted with him like I did with everyone else.

“How were we supposed to tell you godmother was planning a farewell party?” Jerald asked, feeding me strawberries.

“If we had told you, that would've definitely been us snitching,” Alex added.

“I guess that's why you dragged us to your house?” Dina turned to Jerald with a smile.

“Technically, I didn't drag you. You followed me,” Jerald said, using a napkin to wipe my face.

“This is exactly why I don't want to be around you both,” Dina said, looking at Jerald and me in disgust. “Moments like this are when I wish my man was here. If he was here, I wouldn't have to look at your romantic moments,” she continued pettishly, making all of us burst into laughter.

“Open up... aahhh,” Trevor said to Dina, trying to feed her grapes.

“What do you think you're doing?” Dina asked, laughing as she dodged the grapes.

“I am a man, and I can also be your man,” Trevor teased, making all of us laugh non-stop.

“The hell? I didn't know you had this dramatic side of you,” I said to Trevor, still in disbelief.

“What do you expect from a guy in love?” Tyler asked, making us laugh even harder.

“Don't mind him. He's just lonely since his missus is away on vacation,” Alex added.

“Don't tell me he has a girlfriend?” Jerald asked in shock.

Not waiting to hear his response, I walked toward the house.

“Where are you headed?” godmother's voice rang out beside me from where she sat with her friends.

“I need to grab something from the room,” I responded with a smile.

Dashing into the room, I picked up the Jamaican-patterned bag we had made in crochet class, along with the sweatshirt I had made as my final practical. Then I quickly headed back.

“Click, click.”

The wine glass in my hand sounded as it collided with the cutlery in my other hand, drawing everyone's attention.

“I'm sorry for stealing your time yet again, but I needed to do this,” I said, picking up the bag. Moving closer to godmother, I continued, “When I was making this bag, I couldn't imagine it on anyone else but you. Thank you for paying for my crochet class. I'll make more of these and send them over.”

Handing godmother the bag, I pecked her on the cheek as the crowd erupted into wild cheers.

“Thank you, baby,” godmother muttered, smiling uncontrollably.

“And this sweatshirt can only look perfect on my Bling,” I said with a smile as I handed Jerald the sweatshirt, earning a chorus of "awwws" from everyone.

“Put it on me,” Jerald requested, smiling from ear to ear as he handed the sweatshirt back to me.

“I'll do that on one condition,” I responded, attempting to wink.

“What's the condition?” Jerald asked curiously.

“What did your mom whisper to you back home?” I asked in a whisper.

“Is it really necessary?” he asked, taking a step closer.

“Yes,” I responded, forcing a smile.

“Don't feel pressured at all. She asked me to invite you both to ride back with us tomorrow to Mavic.”

This was obviously a bluff. Mrs. Young hated my guts, especially now that I was with her son.

So why would she even want me to travel back with them? The confusion settled deep in my chest, but I temporarily brushed it aside.

Dina noticed the awkward silence and quickly changed the topic.

...

After the guests had left and we were done clearing the garden, I kept pacing up and down the living room without saying a word. I noticed everyone's eyes following me wherever I went.

“Are you pacing because you're sad about leaving tomorrow?” godmother asked soberly, fixing her gaze on me.

Without responding with words, I gently shook my head from side to side and kept pacing.

“I would've guessed you were sad because of Jerald, but he mentioned he was equally leaving tomorrow, so why?” Dina asked, looking at me, completely lost.

Ignoring her, I took a deep breath and kept pacing around.

“Well, we trie...” Dina was still speaking when Alex cut in.

“Are you pregnant?” he exclaimed, pressing his palm against his lips.

“What?” I exclaimed as we all burst into uncontrollable laughter.

“Since you refused to say what was making you restless, like a genius, I needed to use humor to get you to shake it off,” Alex said, raising his brows at me.

“Alright, here's what happened,” I said, sitting beside godmother as everyone drew closer to me. “Wait up. First, you need to promise you won't scream,” I continued, turning to Dina.

“I promise,” she responded almost immediately, placing her palms on her chest as though taking an oath.

“I know you don't mean it, but I'd still rather tell godmother than you... or him,” I said, pointing at Alex with my head.

“What is it, baby?” godmother asked. From her eyes, I could tell she was genuinely concerned.

“So, we were at the Youngs' earlier,” I began.

“The Youngs?” godmother interrupted.

“Yep, that's Jerald's family name,” I responded.

“Okay, so what happened?” godmother asked curiously.

“As I was saying, when we visited the Youngs, Mrs. Young whispered something in Jerald's ear when we were about to leave.”

“I remember,” Dina chipped in.

“Exactly. I coaxed Jerald into telling me what she said,” I continued, then fell silent as they stared at me eagerly.

“And what did he say?” Alex asked curiously.

“Well, godmother, you may not know this, but Mrs. Young doesn't exactly like us. All our meetings with her have been dramatic. Surprisingly, when we met earlier, she didn't say anything harsh to us and even welcomed us...”

“Can you go straight to the point already?” Dina cut in anxiously.

“Alright, alright. Jerald told me this evening that his mom—I mean Mrs. Young—wants Dina and me to tag along with them to the city tomorrow,” I finally said.

“I don't understand what you mean,” Dina said, chuckling in disbelief.

“I mean Jerald's mom asked us to ride back to Mavic City with them tomorrow,” I repeated, practically screaming in disbelief this time.

“Aaaahhhhh!” Dina screamed, jumping to her feet. “Do you mean it?”

Godmother, however, wore a complicated expression as she picked up something from a black box.

I wondered what made her so hesitant, or what she was about to unveil.
