Chapter 039 Haven’t You Done It Yet?
As Adelina walked, she messaged Fiona on WhatsApp. [Last night I had an allergic reaction to alcohol that caused respiratory depression. It was Mr. Moore who found me. I was so close to biting the dust at the Long residence after getting a little emergency rescue.]
[OMG! I thought you two had already hit a home run! CEO Moore's voice is incredible; I can get pregnant just listening to it! So, you're okay now, right?]
[I'm fine, the doctor came to check on me in the middle of the night, by that time I had already recovered. Now I'm on my way to the company.]
[Great, I'm heading to work too!]
The two said goodbye to each other, and not long after, Adelina arrived at the Moore Corporation building.
Her office was on the 13th floor. After entering the elevator, she unexpectedly bumped into Lola coming up from the underground parking lot.
"Good morning, Lola," she said politely, greeting her.
Lola gave her a cold glance and remained silent.
Exiting the elevator, Zoe, who had arrived at the company earlier, approached Adelina excitedly. "Adelina, how did it go? Did you give that gift to CEO Moore? Has he used it yet?"
Not mentioning it would have been better; at the mention, Adelina's faced turned sour. "You almost got me killed! How could you send something like that to Mr. Moore?"
However, Zoe heard a different implication. "Is he really that intense? How many times a night?"
Adelina's expression grew even darker. "Zoe, if you keep this up, I might not be able to remain friends with you."
Observing her reaction, Zoe looked slightly disappointed. "So... you haven't done it yet?"
Adelina decided to ignore her and walked straight to her workstation.
"I'm sorry! I was just joking with you! Mr. Moore didn't blame you, did he? You didn’t mention my name, right?"
Zoe saw that Adelina seemed genuinely upset and hurriedly followed her, apologizing non-stop.
However, Adelina acted as if she didn’t hear, sitting quietly at her desk and turning on her computer.
"Adelina, calm down! To tell you the truth, I did it because I lost a bet with them, so... so they made me give you that box of Durex to give to..."
Zoe squatted beside her seat, trying to explain apologetically.
After hearing this, Adelina frowned. "Them? Who are they?"
Zoe whispered, "Just our group B buddies..."
Adelina immediately looked around and sure enough, she saw a few suspicious-looking people glancing their way. As soon as they met Adelina's gaze, they looked away, pretending to be busy.
This was the first time Adelina felt like an outsider, as if no matter how hard she tried, she could never fit into their group.
Infidelity within marriage, unspoken rules, sleeping one's way to the top...
Once these labels were stuck to her, they were hard to peel off.
Others would always look at her through that same tainted lens.
She laughed coldly to herself, still choosing to ignore them, feeling that even an explanation was unnecessary.
Zoe grew impatient as she noticed there was still no reaction from her.
Just as she was about to stand up and throw some sarcastic remarks at her, suddenly she saw Lola coming over, tapping on the table in front of Adelina. "Why are you still sitting here? Didn't Mr. Moore transfer you upstairs? Get up and make space, I need to put stuff here!"
With that, she watched as a few movers started placing boxes of construction materials on her desk.
Adelina reluctantly closed her laptop, looking puzzled at her. "Lola, I know I have to redo Parr's project, but my desk..."
Lola emphasized her point, "Didn't you understand? Mr. Moore moved you up, you don’t need to sit here anymore! Move, so you won't be in the way of my stuff!"
With Lola's insistence, Adelina had no choice but to pack her computer into her bag.
As soon as she stood up, a mover immediately placed the items he was carrying onto her chair.
Zoe, watching from the side, thought it was outrageous. "Lola, what do you mean? Adelina got promoted? She can go upstairs now? Which floor?"
Lola glared at her. "It's none of your business what floor she's going to. If you can’t climb the ladder on your own, then focus on your work!"
Dropping that explosive comment, Lola turned and left with the movers.
Adelina looked even more uncomfortable, and at that moment, those who didn't dare gossip about her to her face couldn't help but stir up trouble.
"I always said she got her position by selling herself, playing the innocent!"
"She’s playing both sides!"
"Daring to do it but can't stand being talked about?"
"Exactly, acting all high and mighty here! She thinks she's so innocent."
"She’s just used a life-saving favor to climb into bed with him. If I had the chance to save Mr. Moore, I would climb too!"
"Isn't that so? And she hides it, if she was more open about it, I wouldn't find it so disgusting!"
...
All the way from the office area to the elevator lobby, these obscene words followed them nonstop.
Adelina maintained her silence, while Zoe followed her out, offering what seemed like a kindhearted consolation, "Don't mind them, I believe you are definitely not what they say. But I do think Mr. Moore really likes you. If you come across any problems upstairs and feel uncomfortable asking others, you can ask me. I hope we can still be friends."
The elevator doors opened, and Adelina walked in, then finally looked up at her.
"Zoe, they were right about one thing," Adelina said calmly, "If you see me in the same way they do, then go ahead and admit it. I won't think any less of you for it!"
After her words, she pressed the button to close the elevator doors, ignoring the surprised and shocked look on Zoe's face.
