CHAPTER FIFTY FIVE
CHAPTER FIFTY FIVE
Chapter Fifty-Five
The bus finally rolled into the campgrounds with a loud screech, sending half the students cheering and the other half already whining about who would get the best cabins.
The air smelled different here—pine trees, fresh soil, the faint sweetness of wildflowers carried by the evening breeze.
Aurelia stepped down from the bus with her bag clutched to her side. Her heart thudded faster than usual.
She wasn’t scared of camp itself—she’d gone to sleepovers and school trips before—but being paired with Caelum still left her unsettled.
It wasn’t something she’d asked for, and yet all eyes had turned to her yesterday when his name was called beside hers.
Clara had grinned like it was some fairytale match, but Aurelia knew better. There was nothing romantic about this. It just felt… strange.
She caught herself sneaking a glance at Caelum as he jumped off the bus a few steps behind her.
He carried himself the same way he always did: calm, quiet, almost too composed for someone their age.
Like he didn’t belong in this crowd at all. She quickly looked away before he noticed.
“Alright, everyone!” Mr. Charles clapped his hands, his voice booming enough to hush most of the chatter.
“Welcome to summer camp. This is not just about fun—it’s also about teamwork and responsibility. You’ll be living here for a month or more, so listen carefully.”
The group gathered around, dragging their bags over the gravel. Clara was already whispering in Aurelia’s ear, giggling about who might get stuck doing chores.
Aurelia tried to focus, but her nerves kept pricking at her skin.
“You’ll each have your own cabin,” Mr. Charles continued, and cheers instantly broke out. “But the partner you were paired with yesterday will be your cabin neighbor.
That means teamwork, whether you like it or not. Meals will be served in the main hall. Curfew is ten p.m., no excuses. And remember—you represent your school here, so keep the drama low and the effort high.”
A laugh rippled through the crowd at the “keep the drama low” part. Chloe, standing at the back with Liz and Mandy, crossed her arms and rolled her eyes.
The moment Aurelia’s gaze brushed past her, Chloe tilted her chin, giving a smirk that sent Aurelia’s stomach dropping.
Great. She wasn’t even going to get through the first day without Chloe finding some way to make her miserable.
“Now, since we already paired you yesterday, check the list on the board to find your cabin assignment,” Mr. Charles finished.
Immediately, the crowd broke apart in squeals, groans, and the sound of sneakers pounding toward the wooden board nailed to a tree.
Aurelia followed behind Clara, not in a rush, since she already knew she’d be stuck with Caelum as her closest neighbor.
“Lucky you,” Clara whispered, nudging her playfully. “Everyone’s still shocked he picked you. I mean—look at Chloe’s face.”
Aurelia didn’t have to look. She could feel Chloe’s anger from across the yard. But she forced a shrug, pretending it didn’t matter. “It’s not luck, Clara. It’s… awkward.”
Meanwhile, Chloe made no attempt to hide her frustration.
She pouted as she leaned against the fence, watching Caelum with narrowed eyes. “Out of all people,” she muttered to Liz. “He had to pick her.”
Liz smirked. “Maybe he’s just playing safe. Aurelia’s the teacher’s favorite, quiet, easy-going. He probably thought she wouldn’t bother him.”
But Chloe shook her head, determination burning in her eyes. “No. He’ll regret it. Just watch."
By the time Aurelia finally checked the list, her stomach twisted at the sight of her name scrawled beside Caelum’s.
Reality sank in deeper: her cabin would be right next to his. That meant seeing him every morning, every night, whether she wanted to or not.
She dragged her suitcase along the dirt path toward the cabins.
Caelum walked ahead of her, steady and wordless, as if the whole situation didn’t affect him at all. She wished she could feel that calm.
Behind them, Chloe purposely quickened her pace until she walked right beside Caelum.
“So,” she said, her voice sugary-sweet, “guess we’re finally at camp. Should be fun, don’t you think?”
Caelum glanced at her once, expression blank, then kept walking without a reply.
Chloe’s smile faltered, but she tried again. “If you need anything—anything at all—you can always come to me.
I know this camp like the back of my hand. Way better than Aurelia, at least.” Her eyes flicked toward Aurelia for a split second, full of challenge.
Aurelia’s chest tightened. She didn’t respond, but she didn’t have to—the silence Caelum gave Chloe was answer enough. Still, that didn’t stop Chloe from trailing after him like a shadow.
Finally, Aurelia reached her cabin, pushing open the wooden door and stepping inside. The walls smelled faintly of polish and dust, and the bed was plain but clean.
She ran her fingers over the blanket, trying to focus on anything except the fact that her neighbor—the boy everyone was whispering about—was right next door.
She didn’t know how to act around him. They weren’t friends.
They weren’t enemies. They were… something in between. And she hated how much it made her overthink.
Across the campgrounds, Chloe sat on a bench with Mandy and Liz, glaring at the row of cabins where Aurelia and Caelum had disappeared. “This isn’t over,” she whispered.
Meanwhile, Caelum finished unpacking in his own space. His room was nearly identical to Aurelia’s, yet he treated it like a temporary station, not a home.
Leaning against the wall, arms crossed, he thought about the choice he had made yesterday. For him, this wasn’t about friendship.
It wasn’t about Chloe or any of the other girl
s either. It was about focus. Observation. Strategy. And Aurelia, whether she realized it or not, was the starting point.
The first day at camp had barely begun, and already, invisible lines of tension stretched between them all.
And deep down, Aurelia knew this summer was going to change everything.
