Chapter 71

Chapter 71
Marcello pov

My boots echoed ominously through the cold, damp corridors as I stormed towards the guardroom, each step fueled by a burning fury that simmered just beneath the surface. The air was thick with tension, and a sense of dread hung heavily in the gloom. Where the hell is Lyra? I demanded, slamming my fist against the rough-hewn wooden table, the impact reverberating through the small chamber and causing the guards to flinch.

"I-I don't know, sir," one of them stuttered, his voice tremulous and shaky. He avoided my gaze, his eyes darting apprehensively between his comrades, searching for any semblance of support that never came. "She was in her room last night, and this morning…she was just gone."

A low growl of frustration escaped my lips as I glared at each of the guards, my stare lingering on their pale faces, where fear was etched deep in their features. "You incompetent fools," I spat, my voice a dangerous whisper laced with menace. "You were supposed to keep her safe, not lose her."

They trembled, the gravity of their failure settling like a lead weight in the air. I had invested months—months—into Lyra, meticulously selecting her, nurturing her for a specific and crucial purpose. She was not just valuable; she was irreplaceable. And now she was gone. The thought sent a fresh wave of anger surging through me. I couldn't let this slide. This wasn’t merely a failure of duty; it was an affront to everything I’d worked for. I would make them pay for this lapse, and I would find Lyra, no matter the cost.

"Find her," I growled, my voice low and dangerous, a warning laced within each syllable. Anger gnawed at me, my patience fraying like an old rope. "I want her back in her room within the hour. Do you understand?"

They nodded frantically, their eyes wide and filled with fear, as they scrambled to obey my order. I watched them, a simmering rage bubbling just beneath the surface. Their incompetence would not go unpunished; I could already envision the consequences they would face.

I turned to the guard who appeared the most rattled, his hands trembling ever so slightly at his sides. "You," I said, my voice dripping with malice and intent. "You're coming with me." His face paled further, and he stumbled after me, wide eyes reflecting sheer terror at my command.

We made our way to the courtyard, the sun beating down upon us relentlessly, like a malevolent deity eager to witness the unfolding chaos. I stopped in front of a massive, ancient-looking door, its surface weathered and engraved with cryptic symbols that spoke of long-forgotten secrets. The air was thick with tension, anticipation crackling between us as I prepared to confront whatever lay beyond it.

"Open it," I ordered, my eyes never leaving the guard's face.

He hesitated, then pushed the door creakily open. Inside was a dimly lit room filled with...implements. Tools designed to inflict pain and break the human spirit. The guard's eyes widened in horror as he realized his fate.

"You're going to tell me everything you know about Lyra's disappearance," I said, my voice cold and detached. "And if you don't...if you don't, I'll make sure you suffer like you've never suffered before."

The guard whimpered, backing away from me as I advanced. I could smell his fear, pungent and acrid. It only fueled my rage.

I reached out, grabbing his wrist and twisting it until he cried out. "Let's start with the easy questions," I said, my smile cold and calculated. "Who was on duty last night?"

As he stammered out an answer, I dragged him deeper into the room, the shadows cast by the flickering torches seeming to writhe like living things. The air was thick with the scent of sweat and fear.

The guard's words spilled out in a frantic rush, each syllable laced with urgency, but I could see the truth lurking beneath his stammering facade. In his eyes, I detected a flicker of defiance, a stubborn spark I was determined to snuff out.

My anger was not solely about Lyra; it resonated deeper, rooted in the very principle of authority itself. No one, especially not him, could challenge my command without facing the consequences. I was the one in control, the one wielding power like a finely honed weapon, and I would ensure that everyone around me understood the weight of that truth. This wasn't just a matter of enforcing my will; it was about reinforcing the very foundations of my rule. As the tension in the air grew, I knew I would do whatever it took to reclaim my dominance and silence any dissent.

The guard's screams echoed through the room as I worked him over, my rage and frustration boiling over. But even as I inflicted pain, I couldn't shake the feeling that Lyra was gone, slipped through my fingers like sand.

I would find her. Oh, I would find her. And when I did, she would pay for her defiance. But first, these guards would pay for their incompetence.

The hours dragged on, the sun blazing overhead like a relentless overseer. I interrogated the guards with a mix of determination and desperation, peeling back layers of their stories to extract every last detail about Lyra. Despite my efforts, she remained an elusive figure, a specter flitting through the shadows, always just beyond my reach.

As night descended, I found myself standing in the dimly lit courtyard, the weight of darkness pressing in around me. My gaze pierced the veil of night, searching for any sign of her. Where are you, Lyra? I thought, the anger and frustration bubbling just beneath my calm exterior. It was as if the very air crackled with my resolve—you're mine, and I'll find you. No matter how deep you hide, you can’t escape me.

The guards, broken and battered, hung from the walls, their screams echoing through the night air. But I didn't feel satisfied. I felt...empty. Lyra was still out there, and I wouldn't rest until she was back in my grasp.

I'll find you, Lyra. I'll find you, and I'll make you pay.
