Chapter 102 The Black Car

Chapter 102 The Black Car
The morning calm didn’t last long.

Evelyn finished her coffee while Damien took a call near the window. His voice stayed low, controlled, but she could see the tension in the way his shoulders held.

Something had shifted in him overnight.

Not panic.

Something colder.

Lucas appeared a few minutes later.

“Car is ready, sir.”

Damien ended the call and turned back toward Evelyn.

“You’re still coming with me,” she said before he could speak.

He studied her for a moment.

“Foundation board meeting,” she added. “You promised yesterday.”

A pause.

Then he nodded once.

“Fine.”

Relief flickered across her face, but it didn’t erase the tension in the room.

The car ride started quietly.

Lucas drove.

Damien slid into the back seat beside Evelyn.

Evelyn sat behind them, watching the city slide past the tinted windows.

Morning traffic was building. Office workers. Delivery vans. The usual rhythm of a normal day.

Normal felt strange now.

She leaned slightly forward.

“You’re still not telling me what happened yesterday.”

Damien didn’t turn around.

“Nothing you need to worry about.”

“That answer keeps getting worse every time you say it.”

Lucas’s eyes flicked briefly to the rearview mirror.

Then back to the road.

Something in his expression changed.

Subtle.

But Damien noticed.

“What is it?” Damien asked quietly.

Lucas didn’t answer immediately.

He checked the mirror again.

Then the side mirror.

Then the mirror once more.

“There’s a car behind us,” Lucas said.

Evelyn leaned closer to the window beside Damien, trying to see past the tinted glass.

“What kind of car?”

“Black sedan,” Lucas replied. “Same one that turned onto the last three streets.”

Silence settled inside the vehicle.

Damien’s posture didn’t change.

But something in his expression did.

His eyes hardened.

Cold.

Calculating.

“How long?” Damien asked.

“About four minutes.”

“Distance?”

“Three car lengths.”

Evelyn’s stomach tightened.

“You think they’re following us?”

Lucas didn’t answer that one.

He didn’t need to.

Damien lifted his gaze toward the rearview mirror, catching Lucas’s eyes.

The black car stayed exactly where Lucas said it was.

Not speeding up.

Not falling back.

Just… there.

Watching and Waiting.

Damien’s voice dropped.

“Next right.”

Lucas turned the wheel without hesitation.

The car behind them followed.

Evelyn felt the tension rise instantly.

“They’re definitely following us,” she whispered.

Damien didn’t look back again.

“Drive into the tunnel.”

Lucas nodded once.

The car accelerated slightly, merging into a lower roadway that led toward the old service tunnel beneath the financial district.

The entrance swallowed the morning light.

Dark concrete walls surrounded them.

Sound echoed.

Lucas slowed.

The black sedan followed them inside.

Still three car lengths back.

Damien unbuckled his seatbelt.

Evelyn noticed immediately.

“What are you doing?”

He didn’t answer.

Lucas pulled the car to the side of the tunnel.

The tires rolled to a stop.

Behind them, the black sedan stopped too.

Silence filled the tunnel.

Damien opened the door.

Evelyn grabbed his arm before he could step out.

“Damien.”

He looked at her.

His expression had gone completely still.

“Stay in the car.”

“That’s not reassuring.”

“It’s not meant to be.”

He stepped out.

Lucas followed him immediately.

The echo of their footsteps bounced through the tunnel as they walked toward the other vehicle.

Evelyn watched through the rear window.

Her heart was pounding now.

The black sedan sat quietly in the middle of the lane.

Engine running.

Windows dark.

Damien stopped about ten feet from it.

Lucas stood slightly behind him.

Neither man spoke.

For a long moment, nothing happened.

No door opened.

No window lowered.

No movement.

Just two vehicles and the low hum of engines echoing off concrete walls.

Damien’s gaze stayed fixed on the car.

Cold.

Unmoving.

A message without words.

You made a mistake following me.

Inside the sedan, someone shifted.

Barely visible.

But Damien saw it.

His jaw tightened.

Still, no one stepped out.

Lucas spoke quietly beside him.

“Do you want me to approach?”

Damien didn’t take his eyes off the vehicle.

“No.”

Another long moment passed.

Then...

The black sedan’s headlights flickered once.

Not an accident.

A signal.

Lucas noticed it too.

“What was that?”

Damien’s voice stayed low.

“A warning.”

Before Lucas could respond, the sedan slowly reversed.

Then turned.

And drove back out of the tunnel.

Just like that.

Gone.

Lucas watched the empty road for a moment before turning back toward Damien.

“They didn’t even try to hide.”

“They weren’t trying to.”

“They just wanted us to see them.”

“Yes.”

Lucas frowned.

“That’s not normal intimidation.”

Damien’s gaze remained on the tunnel entrance where the car had disappeared.

“No,” he said quietly.

“It’s not.”

Behind them, Evelyn opened the car door and stepped out.

She walked toward them slowly.

“You’re telling me that was just a coincidence?”

Damien didn’t answer.

She stopped a few feet away.

“Someone followed us. Into a tunnel. Then drove away without saying a word.”

Her voice lowered.

“That’s not random.”

“No,” Damien said.

“It isn’t.”

She looked between him and Lucas.

“Then what was it?”

Damien finally turned toward her.

His expression had gone colder than she had ever seen it.

“A test.”

Her stomach dropped.

“A test of what?”

His answer came without hesitation.

“How fast I react.”

The realization hit her immediately.

“Which means…”

He finished the sentence for her.

“They’re studying us.”

A chill ran down her spine.

Because if someone was studying Damien Cross...

They were either very brave.

Or very desperate.

Lucas spoke again.

“Should we reroute?”

Damien looked once more toward the tunnel exit.

“Yes.”

They returned to the car.

But Evelyn couldn’t shake the feeling sitting in her chest.

Someone had just followed Damien Cross.

And walked away.

That meant one thing.

Whoever it was

They weren’t afraid of him.

Adrian

Adrian stared at the security feed on his laptop.

The tunnel camera had captured everything.

Damien stepping out.

Lucas beside him.

The pause.

The tension.

Exactly what Adrian needed to see.

He leaned back slowly.

“They react fast,” he murmured.

Faster than expected.

He hadn’t authorized Stage Two.

Not yet.

The car had been his idea.

Independent and unregistered.

Just a probe.

Just pressure.

Just enough to test the perimeter around Damien Cross.

Now he knew.

Cross didn’t hesitate.

Didn’t panic.

Didn’t hide.

He confronted the threat directly.

Adrian tapped the desk slowly with his fingers.

That made things more complicated.

Because men like Damien Cross didn’t fold under pressure.

They escalated.

Adrian closed the video feed.

If he failed

They wouldn’t hesitate.

They had erased people for less.

And Adrian had no intention of becoming one of them.

He reached for his phone.

Another call.

Another move.

Because now he knew something important.

Damien Cross wasn’t the only one being hunted.

The real question was...

Who would get to Evelyn first.
