Chapter 305
Amelia was a bit confused for a moment. "What do you envy me for?"
Lily's lips curled into a small smile, but for the first time, her usually cheerful face showed a hint of sadness.
"When you were heartbroken over Alexander, Mr. Anderson swooped in like a knight in shining armor and saved you. Even though you still had feelings for Alexander, having someone by your side made things a lot better, and you found true happiness."
If anyone else had said this, Amelia might have argued back, but it was Lily speaking.
And Lily was at a really low point in her life right now. Amelia could only sigh.
She wrapped Lily in a gentle hug, trying to comfort her. "Don't overthink it. I believe you'll meet a guy who truly loves and treats you well. You're such an amazing girl; ordinary guys don't deserve you."
The comforting words didn't seem to help much.
Lily closed her eyes, leaning against Amelia's chest. "You're an exceptional person too, which is why you and Mr. Anderson are such a perfect match. I'm not as amazing as you. Maybe God is punishing me by sending someone like Mark, who messages me every day just to annoy me. It's like he's afraid I won't get mad enough."
Lily was venting her anger, but Amelia caught the key point in her words. "Wait, Mark messages you often? How come I didn't know about this?"
Lily didn't hide it and handed her phone to Amelia. "You see. Even if we chat often, it's never anything nice. He mocks me for not being able to get the guy I like and for looking a mess at work every day. It drives me crazy! At least I have someone I like, unlike him who doesn't even have that."
The more she spoke, the more furious she became. Lily wanted to storm back into the room and strangle Mark.
Amelia hadn't realized that they had so much interaction outside of their usual banter.
Not wanting to invade Lily's privacy, Amelia swiped through a few messages and handed the phone back. "Alright, don't be mad. I'll talk to Henry about giving Mark a good talking-to. Let's go for a walk."
The dinner ended quickly, and on the way back to the hotel, Amelia was scrolling through her phone.
Her gaze shifted to Henry.
Henry, who rarely wore glasses, had them on because he was driving. The frames only accentuated his prominent nose bridge.
The streetlights outside cast a warm glow on Henry's handsome profile, making him look even more striking.
Lily's tearful words echoed in Amelia's mind, and her heart started to race.
She indeed considered herself lucky to be with someone as exceptional as Henry, both in appearance and ability.
Despite some bumps in the beginning, everything had worked out.
Henry, his attention fixed on the road ahead, noticed Amelia's intense gaze.
He turned slightly. "What are you staring at so hard?"
Amelia couldn't admit she was admiring his face. She coughed to hide her embarrassment. "I'm just looking at you. You're my future husband; it's not a crime to look at you!"
Henry saw her blushing and couldn't resist pinching her cheek. "Of course, you can. As long as you don't get tired of me, you can look at me forever."
Henry's smooth talk made Amelia's heart flutter. She had planned to steal a kiss during a stoplight. But Henry's phone rang incessantly, shattering the moment.
Amelia frowned, hoping it was a spam call so she could hang up. But seeing James's name on the screen, her mood deflated. "It's James," she said, handing the phone to Henry. How annoying.
Henry took the call naturally, but in the next instant, he pulled Amelia close and kissed her deeply, erasing her last bit of rational thought. In the quiet car, she could hear her own nervous heartbeat. Henry's warm lips stirred a potent sensation within her.
'Amelia! This is so embarrassing! We're on a public road!' Amelia muttered inwardly.
Realizing they couldn't continue, Amelia pushed Henry away. "Drive."
Her voice was hoarse, and her eyes glistened, hinting at her inner turmoil. Henry swallowed hard, wishing they weren't outside.
James's serious voice came through the phone. "Henry, do you have a moment?"
Amelia's mischievous thoughts vanished instantly. Henry, seeing her serious expression, wanted to laugh. "Is there a new assignment?" Henry's expression changed instantly, and he replied in a cold tone.
Work was the only thing they talked about. But James denied it. "Walter's lawyer is coming to read the will. You and Amelia need to be there. Can you come back?"
Henry didn't respond immediately. If it were just about him, he could decide. But it involved Amelia. He looked at her, and she smiled and nodded.
Walter had shown her genuine kindness. How many would bequeath their estate to a neighbor without any blood relation?
With Amelia's approval, Henry answered. "We'll come back tomorrow. Anything else?"
James wanted to chat more, but Henry's curt tone discouraged him. He could only muster a simple, "Take care of yourselves and don't overwork."
Henry grunted in response. Both men understood that maintaining this surface-level civility was the best they could manage.
James hung up, and Amelia moved into Henry's warm embrace. She found a comfortable spot to lie down.
"This is Walter's last wish. He acknowledged you before he died. We should go." she remarked.
Henry wasn't interested in Walter's resources, but Walter had held significant meaning for Amelia. Henry's concern for Amelia extended to those she loved.
