Chapter 301
After breakfast, Henry gently pushed Amelia back onto the bed to apply some ointment.
They had gone a bit overboard last night, and now there were some minor consequences.
Amelia didn't think it was a big deal, but Henry insisted she needed to be in perfect health.
It felt like all her personal boundaries had melted away. She used to be too shy to even laugh loudly in front of him, and now she was letting him take care of her most intimate areas.
All she could do was cover her face in embarrassment.
Even though it was awkward, it was surprisingly comfortable.
'Amelia, you're really too depraved!' she thought to herself.
After applying the ointment, Henry wiped his hands with a tissue. "You need to let the medicine absorb. Stay here and don't move, okay?"
Earlier, during breakfast, Amelia's walking had noticeably changed.
Henry looked at himself in the bathroom mirror, showing typical signs of overindulgence.
For some reason, whenever he was with Amelia, his usually strong self-control would completely crumble.
Amelia carefully pulled the blanket over her naked body.
Her face was bright red as she quietly took out her phone to search for ways to prevent this from happening again.
She had no desire to go through this awkward ointment application process a second time.
Henry was already being as gentle as he could with her.
She suddenly remembered the foolish things she had done to him in the past. Falsely accusing him when they were kids, making his life harder, and almost getting engaged to another man!
Amelia wished there was a delete button to erase all those memories.
Compared to his unwavering care, she felt like an unworthy woman toying with his affections.
She resolved with renewed determination to heal Henry's pain and mend his wounded heart.
Just as Henry came out of the bathroom, the doorbell rang unexpectedly.
Before he could open the door, Mark had already entered the living room, having used the code.
Trailing behind him was Finley.
Mark, looking relaxed and unbothered, propped his feet up on the table. "You guys have no idea how exhausted I was this Christmas. I felt like I had to organize everything at home!"
Henry, used to his behavior, placed a glass of water in front of both of them.
Mark couldn't stand being alone. Going back home was just a formality for him.
He would run back within a week to find various activities to relax.
Playing from his twenties to nearly thirty and still not having enough was quite something.
Finley mercilessly called him out. "You can't stand being alone and ran out. Henry has a family now; do you think he'll mess around with you? But you are something else. You had the most girlfriends in school, and now you're still single."
Hitting a nerve, Mark hurled a tissue from the table at Finley. "Do you have to provoke me? If I didn't want to cause trouble, I'd fight you outside."
Finley grabbed a bottle of vintage wine from the rack and couldn't help but nod approvingly. "Henry, you've been holding out on us. How long were you planning to keep this hidden?"
The voices from the living room drifted to Amelia's ears. Hastily throwing on her pajamas, she stepped out.
Mark rolled his eyes dramatically. "Finley ought to be struck by lightning. Can you believe he told a girl with cancer she might not live long? Isn't that insane?"
Amelia's eyes widened in surprise. "He didn't say that to Bronte, did he?"
Mark's face lit up with a smile when he saw her. "Amelia, you're here? I thought you went out shopping. I missed you!"
Amelia smiled helplessly.
Mark continued. "Yeah! It was Bronte. She has cancer and is already going through enough, and he dares to mock her."
Amelia parted her lips, poised to speak.
Finley was Henry's friend, and it didn't seem courteous to speak out of turn.
As she hesitated, Finley raised an eyebrow. "What's wrong with what I said? She's dying, isn't she? Just because she has cancer, I can't speak the truth?"
His words were harsh.
Amelia couldn't contain herself. "Why would you say that about Bronte? She's a really nice person. I don't know what issues you have with her, but would you be happy if she really wasn't in this world anymore?"
Amelia wasn't intimately acquainted with Bronte but had met her on several occasions.
Bronte always radiated brightness and warmth, with a kind word for everyone. She was well-liked by all.
After graduation, she mysteriously had a child of unknown origin, which garnered much pity from those around her.
And now, stricken with cancer, her life must be arduous.
Finley mocking her directly was something Amelia couldn't understand.
In the past, she would have chosen to stay out of it.
But now, with a stable family and career, she felt emboldened.
Even if it meant offending Finley, she was unafraid.
Sure enough, after a few seconds of tense silence, Finley laughed. "If she really dies, I must celebrate."
His words were like a bomb dropped into a tranquil lake. Amelia's mouth hung open, unsure how to respond.
How could someone have such intense hatred for another person, even cursing them to die?
With her sharp instincts, she knew there must be a complicated story between them.
Just as she was about to delve deeper, Henry stepped between her and Finley.
"Enough."
He rarely looked this serious, clearly angry at Finley's words.
Amelia's own indignation stemmed purely from thinking it immoral for Finley to speak so harshly about a girl.
But it wasn't enough to start a fight.
Seeing Henry genuinely upset, Amelia quickly reached out to calm him. "I'm fine, don't be mad."
Finley didn't speak, inspecting Amelia with a scrutinizing gaze.
Amelia standing up for Bronte, whom she barely knew, against him was intriguing.
Sensing the mounting tension, Mark dropped his casual demeanor and stood up to diffuse the situation.
"Amelia, don't be mad. He's just like that, speaking without thinking. He says whatever pops into his head!"
