Chapter 299
Today, he wasn't as crushed as the day Walter died, nor was he as furious as he used to be.
After all the tough times, it seemed like he had finally come to terms with everything.
He nodded and gave a small smile. "So, now that you two are together, is he treating you well? Are you happy with him?"
Amelia shrugged, being straight-up. "I'm really happy. Honestly, if you stopped bothering us, I'd be even happier."
At some point, she had started seeing him as an unwelcome guest in her life.
Alexander forced a bitter smile, tears starting to form in his eyes.
For the first time in over twenty years, he felt ashamed of his past actions. "Amelia, if you're happy, I truly wish you the best. But I still want to remind you, what if he's doing this for revenge..."
He suddenly went quiet. Why was he, without even realizing it, trying to stir up trouble again?
Clearly, Amelia hated hearing this.
But Amelia didn't get mad. She spoke openly. "I used to worry about that, which is why I hesitated to fully commit to this relationship. But now, I’ve figured it out. As long as I can be with him, even if I’m deceived, so be it."
She glanced resolutely at Henry in the distance. "Every day with him is a gift. I think he's worth the risk. If I lose, it's on me. I'm willing to accept all possibilities. At least this way, I won't have any regrets."
She spoke her mind calmly and rationally.
There was something uniquely charming about her.
Alexander was momentarily stunned, and out of the corner of his eye, he saw Henry approaching.
Instinctively, Alexander turned his head, and Henry pointed at his watch. "Five minutes are up. Got anything else to say?"
Time had flown by so quickly.
In the past, Alexander would find Amelia boring and wish time would pass faster when he was with her.
How foolish he had been.
Amelia felt there was no need to continue the conversation. "Do you have anything else to say to me? If not, we're leaving."
What else was there to say? What could he say?
Henry was already standing in front of him. Was Alexander going to question Amelia about why she left him?
Alexander sighed. "You two can go."
They were just waiting for him to say that!
Hand in hand, they turned and walked away.
Alexander, feeling abandoned by the entire world, stood there, watching them leave.
He couldn't bear to look away even after they got into the car, staring until his eyes ached.
The scene before him began to blur.
Reluctantly, he lowered his head and rubbed his eyes.
A warm drop of water fell onto his hand.
Was it a tear? Or concrete regret?
It was fine, he told himself. At least Amelia had made things clear. She hadn't wasted his time.
Although the ending of this story was somewhat regrettable, it was the best he could hope for.
There was no possibility anymore. The Amelia of the past might have been soft-hearted.
But the Amelia of now had her own career and opinions.
No one could change her mind.It was fine. No one could push her around anymore.
Alexander thought he was protecting Amelia from the storm, but after she left, he realized there was no storm outside.
On the way back, Grace asked Amelia anxiously, "Amelia, what did he say to you? He didn't scare you, did he?"
Amelia tiredly rubbed her shoulders. "He said a lot of nonsense, just asked about me and Henry. I told him we've been together for a while and that we lied about not knowing each other before."
Grace sighed. "He's in a really bad state right now. He's lost so much weight, and he used to be so arrogant. Now he's almost depressed. Did he regret leaving you and want to get back together?"
Amelia almost choked on her own saliva at this question.
Grace didn't know how jealous the person sitting next to her could get.
She quickly clarified, "What does he have to do with me? Anyway, I made everything clear. I told him I'm getting married and that I love Henry very much, so he shouldn't bother me anymore."
Sure enough, Henry's lips curled up slightly when he heard this.
He was clearly satisfied.
Actually, how could Henry not see through her little thoughts? He just indulged her.
Amelia was now constantly trying to appease Henry, afraid he might lose his temper.
She spoke deliberately for his ears, knowing he took a peculiar pleasure in her words.
It was strange. When he was abroad, he used to scoff at classmates who sweet-talked their girlfriends.
Yet now, hearing Amelia's tender confessions, he found himself insatiable, yearning for more.
He felt he had become easy to please. As long as Amelia put in a little effort, he could forgive anything.
Christmas had passed a few days ago, and Amelia and Henry were about to return to their hotel.
Grace and Ethan, sensing the young couple's need for privacy, did not insist on their staying longer.
Just as they were about to leave, Grace pulled Amelia into a room. "I must remind you, don't get pregnant before the wedding! You don't want to wear a wedding dress with a big belly, do you?"
Amelia's face turned red.
"Mom! What are you talking about? We're not kids anymore. Besides, Henry is not the kind of person who only cares about his own pleasure and disregards me."
She recalled how Henry always took precautions.
Once, the delivery for condoms was taking too long, and Amelia, unable to wait, suggested taking birth control pills.
Henry sternly refused, "No matter what, I won't let you take birth control pills. I'd rather we do nothing tonight."
In their relationship, Amelia was the one who often underestimated the gravity of situations.
Grace sighed. Amelia was so grown up, yet she still worried her.
"I'm serious. Henry doesn't strike me as that sort. A man who respects his woman wouldn't let her fall into such a predicament." Amelia just wanted to end this awkward conversation quickly, so she brushed it off and rushed out with her things.
Grace's voice followed her as she fled. "Remember! No mistakes!"
Amelia called back over her shoulder, "I know!"
