Chapter 298

He knew he shouldn't keep getting tangled up in this mess, but it had to end sometime.

He bit his lip and asked, "So, you said you liked me before. When did that start? How come I never had a clue?"

It was a blunt question, but Alexander needed to know. Without this answer, he'd never find peace.

Saying these words tore him apart. He once had something real, and now it was gone.

Amelia clearly didn't want to drag this out, but she also wanted to end the nonsense quickly. "Honestly, I can't really explain it. I just felt happy being around you back then. Now that I think about it, you were the only guy I hung out with, and everyone said we were going to get married, so liking you wasn't that weird."

Her tone was detached, like she was talking about someone else's life.

For someone she didn't care about anymore, indifference came easy.

Alexander clenched his fists. "Then why did you keep in touch with him? When you love someone, shouldn't your world revolve around them?"

Amelia, now serious with Henry and eager to cut ties with all her guy friends, hadn't done the same with Alexander.

Amelia found his question ridiculous and took a moment to answer. "We reconnected because of you, actually."

Alexander thought he misheard. "Because of me? What does this have to do with me? I barely talked to him. How could I have helped you two reconnect?"

Amelia remembered the day they met again and couldn't help but smile a little. "Do you remember the day you fought with Mia and ended up at the police station? After you guys kicked me out, I couldn't find a hotel and stumbled into the one Henry was staying at. He took me in. If it weren't for that, we might have stayed strangers forever."

It had been pouring rain, and in the hotel lobby, Amelia met the love of her life.

At that moment, neither of them realized how important that meeting was.

Alexander was stunned, then let out a bitter laugh.

That smile was so twisted, it made anyone who saw it feel uneasy.

It was him. Step by step, he had pushed the girl he loved into Henry's arms.

He had failed this relationship, what right did he have now to question Amelia?

Everything started that night, one relationship quietly ended, and another began to grow.

Only now did he see it as the turning point in their fate.

That night, he texted her asking if she had a place to stay, but she never replied.

He had worried about Amelia and had hurriedly grabbed his clothes to go look for her.

But in such a big city, where should he have looked for her?

Later, Mia comforted him, saying that if Amelia needed a place to stay, she would reach out.

Besides, it was so late, and she hadn't sent any messages, so she was probably already asleep.

He found himself easily convinced.

Now that he thought about it, why did he listen to Mia so much?

Probably because they had just started dating, and the so-called novelty made him lose all reason.

He had always been quick to believe Mia, even during that incident at the ski resort.

Amelia remembered the ski resort mess all too well. "And that time at the ski resort, you kicked me out of the hotel. If it weren't for Henry being there, I would've been wandering the streets again. Alexander, what right do you have to treat me like this over and over and still expect me to have feelings for you?"

Her words cut deep, like knives stabbing into Alexander's heart.

He felt his heart bleeding.

She was right. He had kicked Amelia out of the hotel and didn't even bother to check on her afterward.

He just assumed she'd get another room, completely ignoring how she felt.

"Henry is really good to me." When she mentioned Henry, her tone softened.

Her eyes sparkled.

Amelia's eyes sparkled as she continued. "At the engagement ceremony, when you left me behind, I nearly took my own life. We could have explained the misunderstanding to the guests together, but you chose to run away. If it weren't for him showing up at that moment, I don't know how I would've gone on."

Amelia took a deep breath. "I admit, I've been a coward. My indecision cost me a lot in the past, but the best decision I ever made was getting engaged to him."

Alexander finally looked up at Amelia, his eyes filled with regret. "If I apologize now, will you forgive me?"

Only now did he realize how many terrible things he'd done to Amelia, but he had conveniently forgotten all of it.

What had he been thinking? Why had he treated the most important person in his life so poorly?

Even he couldn't answer that.

And a late apology was meaningless.

"I don't know why you're apologizing now, but Alexander, I'm telling you seriously, we can never go back. We won't even be superficial friends. Our families might meet in the future, but you and I will have no further contact." Amelia's words were firm and cold.

They showed her entire attitude towards Alexander.

Alexander felt stiff all over, even though he'd heard plenty of harsh words lately.

But hearing them from Amelia, he couldn't suppress a pang of sorrow. His voice shook as he spoke, "Do you like him just because he helped you? That's gratitude, not love."

Even now, Alexander was trying to break Amelia's bond with Henry.

But Amelia's response was firm. "At first, I approached him out of guilt and gratitude, but now I want to protect him with my own strength. He's different from you, the world has been too unfair to him, and I want to make it up to him in my own way. Although our journey together has been tough, everything is better now, and I will cherish it."

She was no longer the shy girl who kept everything inside.

Those who are loved always have confidence, and she could now confidently express her feelings.

Alexander suddenly felt a bit dazed. Was the confident woman in front of him really the girl who used to hide behind him?

Her time with Henry had given her real confidence.

Though Alexander hated to admit it, the truth was undeniable.
