Mom?
Mom?
ELLA
I smiled and said, "Yes, Dad, I have gotten back together with Lucas."
My Dad got up.
"No, I'm not having it," he said angrily as he began to walk out of the living room. I ran after him. He got into his bedroom and I quickly followed.
As he sat on the bed, I sat beside him and said, "Dad, please. I understand that you love me and want the best for me, but please don't separate Lucas and me."
My dad shook his head. "Don't you understand? I want the best for you, Ella, and it's not Lucas. He's already too old for you, and then there's the issue of his daughter. I do not want you to keep being in the middle of all that drama.
You deserve better, someone that doesn't have baggage, and Lucas has baggage, and that is his daughter. I don't want that. I don't want a situation where you keep crying and being depressed. Besides, you're too young. You should focus more on your education."
"Come on, Dad," I said. "You know better that being with Lucas doesn't affect my education in any way. I mean, I'm as brilliant as Mum is. All this while I thought it was over between Lucas and me, I was devastated. I lost my will to live.
I was merely living for the sake of it. Please, I know Lucas has a daughter, but she's even the one that brought us back together. Yes, she convinced us to meet because she saw that Lucas was going through a lot.
Just as I was suffering, he was suffering as well. Please let me be with him. It'll make me very happy. Just imagine if Grandpa said you shouldn't be with Mummy. How would you feel?"
"Will you shut up?" My Dad snapped.
"That's a very unnecessary comparison. Your mother and I are a perfect fit for each other, so you don't need to compare."
"I'm not trying to compare," I replied. "Please understand what I'm saying. That when you love someone..."
"I know, I know," my Dad cut me off.
"Fine but first, I need to meet with Lucas."
"But Dad....."
That's final, Ella. It's either I meet with Lucas, or you forget about your relationship with him."
I sighed, "Alright then, if you meet with Lucas, does that mean I can go ahead and be with him?"
"Let me meet with him first," my Dad replied.
"Alright, I will arrange the meeting. When do you want it?" I asked.
"I'll be free tomorrow. Just let me know the time and let him know as well. The earlier I meet him, the better, okay."
I went out and saw my mom sitting in the living room. She smiled at me, and I smiled back before going into my room. I knew my mum was happy for me, but like my dad, she was probably worried too that, I would be hurt once again because of Nova.
However, I believed one thing, there was no love without pain or tears and I was willing to bear it all as long as I ended up with Lucas in the end.
As I went back into my room, I called Lucas and told him that my Dad wanted to meet with him.
"Really?" he asked, "Isn't it too soon?"
I chuckled, "Well, you know my Dad. He's overprotective and worried that I'll get hurt and all that. But please just meet with him.
Listen, my dad is a cool guy as I told you, so probably he wants to get to know you on a more personal level."
"Alright," Lucas said. "I'm not afraid of your dad. Yes, I'll meet with him because my intentions toward you are genuine. So let him know that whatever time he picks is okay. I'll avail myself."
I sighed in relief. My dad didn't give me a specific time and neither did Lucas, so I just had to come up with a time that I felt would be suitable for both of them.
I decided to pick lunchtime and I told Lucas, "My dad would be free by twelve. Would that be fine by you?"
"Of course, that'll be fine by me. Just let him tell me the location, and I'll meet him there."
"Alright, I'll get back to you," I said. I got up from the bed and quickly hurried to my dad's room, but on my way, I noticed he was back in the living room, gisting with my mum.
I smiled and sat beside him, "Hi Daddy. Lucas says twelve is fine by him, if it's okay by you."
"Alright then, tell him that I'll see him at the golf club. There's a bar there, we can discuss during my lunch break."
"Okay, that'll be fine," I replied. I went back into the room and told Lucas about it, and he was fine with it.
The next day, I went to school feeling worried about the meeting. Despite knowing that my dad would consider my happiness in his decision, I couldn't help but feel anxious about how the meeting with Lucas would go.
Later, Lucas called me and said that he had just met with my dad. I asked him how it went and what my dad had said.
He said, "Well, nothing much. Your dad made us believe that he probably wasn't in support, but he asked me about my intentions toward you and all that."
"So what did you say to my Dad?"
Lucas chuckled and told me that he had expressed his love for me and his desire to spend the rest of his life with me.
He also promised my dad that he would never hurt me, which was where my dad's emphasis lay. Lucas said that my dad was nice about the whole thing and gave him his consent, as long as he didn't hurt me.
I was ecstatic and exclaimed, "I am so happy!"
"Your Dad is cool like you said!" Lucas responded.
"We need to celebrate," I told him.
Lucas suggested we stick to our initial plan for a date later in the evening and texted me the location. I told him that I was driving so as usual, there was no need for him to pick me up.
Later, when I was in class, I noticed Aiden staring at me. He eventually came over and apologized for hurting me. He asked if we could talk and I agreed, feeling in a good mood after reconciling with Lucas.
When we stood outside, I thanked Aiden for being a good friend to me and told him that it wouldn't be fair to him if we continued to be close since our feelings for each other were not mutual.
Although Aiden said he was fine with just being friends, I insisted that it was better for us to avoid each other. He nodded and I hugged him before we returned to class.
After my class, I went to meet Lucas as we had agreed and we had a great time together. The next month was nothing short of sweet. Aiden and I were now on good terms, though not as close.
Nova became ahead of me in class by a few scores, but I didn't mind, which was unlike me. Perhaps it was because I wasn't as focused as before.
Nova usually spent her whole day studying, and I spent some of mine with Lucas. But I was okay with not having everything, as long as I had Lucas. I knew I couldn't have it all. Nova didn't consider me a friend, but at least we said hi to each other when we passed.
Lucas rocked my world. We went out on dates and had so many sweet moments. We went to karaoke, went swimming many times, went to the beach, went shopping together, and even went skydiving together, although I didn't tell my Dad about that because I knew he would never give his consent.
The best part of my days was always when we had lunch because Lucas would always stare at me as though I was the best thing in the world. It was just so amazing, and I wished that we would always be that way.
Lucas invited me to spend the weekend at his place, but I knew my dad would throw a fit if I didn't sleep at home. So, I told him I was going to come but would go back home when evening came.
He was fine with it since Nova spent all her weekends at the library. We practically had the house to ourselves, so I left my house early, as usual.
My parents even knew where I was going, but they were cool with everything since my dad had sorted it out with Lucas.
I went to Lucas' house and as usual, he was nothing but sweet. I wanted to cook for him. Although I wasn't an amazing cook, I was still good enough.
So, I decided to be the chef for the day, but Lucas didn't want me to go through the trouble. We ended up cooking together, eating together, and spending the whole day in bed.
When evening came, the smile on my face began to disappear because I knew it was time to part. Our moments always seemed so short, probably because time ran faster when I was with Lucas.
"I'll escort you home," he said.
"Can't I stay a little more?" I asked.
"Well of course you can, but you know Nova would be coming, and I noticed that you are a bit uncomfortable when she's around."
"I'm not uncomfortable," I replied. "I just don't want to make her uncomfortable. But it's fine, you can see me off."
Just at that moment, Nova came in. She stared at both of us and said, "Hi, Dad."
"Hi, Nova," I replied. The words had barely left my mouth when someone else came into the house.
I had no idea who it was, but it seemed like both Lucas and Nova did. At first, I thought she had come with Nova, but after seeing the look on Nova's face, I knew she hadn't.
Both Nova and Lucas stared at her in surprise. Tears fell from the lady's eyes, and from Nova's as well, as she asked, "Mom?"
My heart began to race the moment I heard Nova. What was going on? Wasn't Nova's mum dead? Lucas stood frozen where he was, while Nova kept staring at the woman.
The lady nodded her head and said, "Yes, baby, I'm your mom."
Nova ran to her and threw herself into her arms, and they both hugged while crying.
I kept staring at Lucas, wondering what he was going to do. After a while, he said, "Emm...Ella, I think you should go. I will call you later."
