Chapter 127: Mia, Do You Regret It?
His movements were gentle.
He slowly crouched down beside her.
Getting closer—
Without heavy makeup to hide it, the darkness in Mia's eyes was clearly getting worse.
Since losing the child, she hadn't had a single good night's sleep.
If this continued, her body would completely break down.
He looked at her.
His eyes full of heartache.
In her sleep, two streams of tears slowly flowed from her eyes, running down from the corners.
James reached out.
Drop after drop.
Falling into his palm.
Each drop felt like a heavy hammer pounding on his heart.
A dull pain.
Watching her tears, James asked in a hoarse voice, softly, "Mia, do you regret it?"
Losing the child, you're so upset—do you regret it?
He really wanted to shake Mia awake and ask her if crying every night meant she regretted it.
But he was also afraid.
Afraid of being hurt by her again.
James closed his eyes in pain and didn't move for a long time.
...
The next day, Mia used even heavier makeup to cover up her exhaustion.
From morning to night, another day of failure.
In the evening, Mia walked into a convenience store, picked out two discounted bread rolls, and sat down on a chair nearby.
She took out her thermos from her bag and ate one bread roll with warm water.
She didn't care at all whether it tasted good or not—she just wanted to fill her stomach.
She had already returned the card to James, and the cash in her wallet was getting less and less.
Before the money ran out, she had to find a job.
But facing rejection after rejection.
She was really starting to feel lost.
After filling her stomach carelessly, Mia left the convenience store and walked toward the subway station.
She walked with her head down, hands in her pockets, moving slowly forward.
The subway entrance was clearly not far away, and she knew she was heading back to Luxe Haven, but every step felt unsteady, very uncertain.
She reached the intersection and walked forward with the crowd. Inside, she had lost direction—she didn't know where her path was.
Because she was distracted, Mia didn't hear her phone ringing in her bag.
Back at Luxe Haven, she came out of the elevator.
She saw a man coming out of the apartment, passing by her.
She didn't pay attention and walked inside.
She put down her bag and took out her phone, only then noticing a missed call from Benjamin.
She changed her shoes, ignoring James sitting on the sofa smoking.
They had run into each other several times these past few days, but each time, she treated him like air, as if he didn't exist.
Mia headed straight upstairs, planning to return to her room to call Benjamin.
Before going upstairs, her eyes habitually glanced toward the nursery, and with that sweep, her steps suddenly stopped.
Complete shock filled her eyes.
She changed direction and strode into the nursery.
Standing at the doorway, looking at the empty room, she was completely stunned.
Gone.
Everything was gone.
All the child's things had disappeared.
Her last bit of remembrance was gone.
These were things she had personally bought for the child, the only proof that the child had once existed.
Mia stumbled out of the nursery and rushed to James, "James, where are the child's things?"
"Threw them away."
James's expression was cold, his tone casual.
Mia thought of the man she'd just seen.
Without thinking, she rushed out to chase after him.
James stood up and grabbed her wrist, pulling her back. She fell back onto the sofa.
Just as she was about to get up, he suddenly leaned over, one arm propped beside her. Looking at Mia's furious eyes, he said with complete malice, "Want to go find them?"
"The garbage truck left ages ago. Everything should be destroyed by now. Where do you think you'll find them?"
Mia bit down hard on her trembling lips.
Her fists clenched tight, her gaze so fierce she looked like she wanted to kill James with her eyes alone.
But in reality, there was nothing she could do about him.
He was truly cruel!
To make her suffer, he spared no effort in attacking her where it hurt most.
James looked at her eyes, furious to the extreme. Behind that fury was sadness she couldn't hide.
He had only gotten rid of these things belonging to their child, and she was already so upset.
Why did she cruelly abort their child!
"Mia, who are you putting on this sad, reluctant act for? You think keeping the child's things and guarding them every night will make the child forgive you?"
"It won't! If our child knew from beyond, she definitely wouldn't forgive you, her heartless mother!"
"Mia, you personally took away her right to live, prevented her from coming into this world! She would only hate you—she could never forgive you!"
Every word from James was cutting into Mia's heart.
He watched as her body trembled more and more violently.
The anger in her eyes was replaced by sorrow, tears flooding into her eyes, swirling there.
"Mia, tell me, do you regret it?"
James pressed Mia, deliberately stabbing where it hurt most.
He wanted to confirm whether she really couldn't bear to lose this child.
He wanted to know—now that she knew aborting the child wouldn't get her a smooth divorce—did she regret it?
As long as she said she regretted it, he would forgive her.
They could have children in the future.
Mia looked at James, who was stabbing her heart without mercy while asking if she regretted it.
She slowly released her bitten lip, staring hard at James, and laughed coldly, "Regret?"
"Yes, I do regret it! The biggest regret of my life is meeting you."
Meeting what she thought was her salvation!
But was actually the demon that dragged her completely into the abyss!
If they had never met...
But there were no ifs.
"Good!"
James stood up extremely slowly.
He had known all along it wouldn't be the answer he wanted to hear.
But seeing her so reluctant to let go of the child, so upset, desperately torturing herself, he still held hope.
Again and again, wanting to give her a chance.
Not wanting to keep torturing her.
But his reluctance—clearly, she didn't care about it.
Really good.
Even now, she still didn't regret it.
No matter how much she loved the child, how upset she was, it couldn't compare to her desire to leave him.
How much she loved the child, how sad she was—that's how much she wanted to leave!
When he stood up, only coldness remained in his eyes. He looked down at Mia from above, his lips curving into an icy arc.
"Mia, since you don't regret it, then stop acting like you miss the child so much, like you loved her so much. It really makes people feel sick!"
Mia kept her head tilted back, forcibly pushing the tears in her eyes back down.
She also slowly stood up, hiding her bloody wounds, meeting James's gaze again.
Not backing down, she shot back, "If you find it so disgusting, then agree to the divorce!"
Divorce?
James laughed bitterly inside.
How could he bear to?
He blew a smoke ring at her, watching her face turn red from coughing, and said softly, "Divorce? Mia, I haven't let you experience what a truly painful marriage is yet. How could I bear to divorce you?"
The cruelest words held his reluctance to let her go.
