Chapter 197

Chapter 197
Ryan’s POV
Seeing Smith slowly disappear into the distant street, I was so furious that I immediately sent Coleman a message back: "Don't you care about your life? Don't contact me on your own."
To my surprise, Coleman on the other end of the phone didn't respond at all after receiving the text message.
I could only take out the cigarette I'd hidden earlier from my pocket and light another one.
As time ticked by second by second, my mood gradually became agitated. To wait for someone who would never show up was simply a waste of my time.
Just as I was about to finish the cigarette in my hand, I suddenly heard the sound of the car door. I thought it was Smith coming back, but that person sat directly in the back seat.
"Officer, how have you been?"
A voice that I hadn't heard for a long time rang out behind me, making my whole body tremble.
Coleman.
"Are you fucking crazy? Do you know what kind of car this is?"
Coleman took the cigarette butt from my hand and took a deep drag.
"What car? Anyway, there's no police markings."
I saw his casual expression in the rearview mirror and felt even angrier. "Aren't you afraid that I'll drive straight to the station and arrest you right now?"
"Hey? Murphy, we're in the same boat." Coleman sneered at me. "The time you arrested me seven years ago, I gave you three hundred thousand dollars to treat your daughter. You must be grateful."
"I've long since repaid your kindness." I gritted my teeth, feeling extremely conflicted. If I'd known earlier, I wouldn't have gotten involved with this scumbag.
"I told you to calm down, but you got into one case after another... I should have sent you to prison with my own hands."
"Are you just talking to your savior like this?" Coleman threw the cigarette butt out of the window. "Your daughter is in elementary school now, isn't she? I remember it was... which private elementary school?"
I was instantly filled with rage. "If you dare to touch my daughter, I'll definitely tear you to pieces."
"We are mutual." Coleman smiled. "If you help me escape the pursuit, I won't touch her."
Deep down in my heart, I knew that once I got on this boat, I would never be able to get off for the rest of my life.
Seven years ago, when I personally arrested Coleman, he suddenly wanted to give me 300,000 dollars to buy his own life.
Although I'd always been a person who hated evil, my daughter had a very rare disease. The doctor said it was called Kriegler-Najal Syndrome. He told me how rare this disease was and also mentioned many ways to deal with it, but I couldn't understand a single word.
All I knew was that my daughter needed a liver transplant and I needed money.
Coleman's 300,000 did save my daughter's life.
But from that day on, I began to work with this scumbag.
If I didn't help him escape from police pursuit time and again, he would threaten to expose what happened back then.
Coleman wasn't "having an extremely strong sense of counter-surveillance"; he just had my help.
I couldn't let anything happen to my daughter.
"Coleman, I have my limits." Looking at the scumbag in the rearview mirror, I said, "If you don't want to be caught, you'd better behave yourself these years. Otherwise, I will definitely make you regret it."
"Damn it..." Coleman's expression suddenly turned cold. He cursed viciously, "Ryan Murphy, you still want to negotiate terms with me? If I'm caught, the brothers in my gang will never let your daughter off the hook."
After hearing this sentence, my heart tightened sharply.
"What do you mean?"
"It means you just be my dog honestly and don't have any plans against me." Coleman kicked the front seat with his foot. "Otherwise, I'll not only ruin your reputation but also ruin your family."
I glanced at him in the rearview mirror, and a thought flashed through my mind.
If Coleman was caught, things would become very troublesome. It didn't matter if one's reputation was ruined. After all, the mistake was made by myself and I should bear the consequences.
But what about my daughter?
So Coleman couldn't be caught.
He had to die.
I was fed up with helping a fraudster every day and living in constant fear against my conscience.
Now that my daughter's illness had been cured, it was time for me to pay off my debts.
If Coleman were left alive, the United States would only get worse.
If everything could start over, I would have sent him to prison that year instead of carrying the burden of conscience for so many years.
But I didn't know if I really did that... would my daughter forgive me?
"Coleman, have you eaten yet?" I asked indifferently.
"Eating?" He was slightly taken aback, seemingly not understanding what I meant.
"You've been under surveillance for so many days. Let me take you to have a good meal. Just consider what I said earlier as too much. Don't take it to heart."
"This still sounds like something a human would say." Coleman lay back in the back seat and slowly stretched. "You guys have been watching for three days. I'm fucking eating canned food every day."
I nodded, started the car and then shifted gears to drive.
Now I needed to find a secluded place so that Coleman's body could be discovered a few days later. Although I would definitely be caught, I also needed to settle my daughter down before that.
While driving slowly, I unfastened the safety of my pistol from my waist.
Coleman had been squinting in the back seat all along, closing his eyes to rest.
Seeing this scene, I slowly drove the car into a nearby alley.
But before the car could stabilize, Coleman behind me suddenly made a move. He stretched out a hard iron wire and instantly put it around my neck.
I suddenly felt something was wrong. This kid actually wanted to kill me too.
"Coleman... you're looking for death..." I gritted my teeth and kept pulling at the wire around my neck, trying to turn around, but my legs were stuck in the steering wheel all the time.
"You're so calculating, officer..." Coleman said with all his might, "You two should be watching together, right? But you sent me out for dinner instead... isn't this too strange? If another person finds out you're missing, won't they contact headquarters?"
In just ten seconds, I felt extremely dark before my eyes.
Coleman was really ready to kill me. I knew that once I died, my daughter's situation would be extremely dangerous.
Thinking of this, I immediately pulled out the pistol at my waist and fired three shots backward with my hand. I didn't even know if I'd hit him.
Inside the enclosed car, the loud gunshots made my ears ring.
"I fucking gave you money to spend... how could you still want to kill me?!" Coleman shouted angrily, increasing the strength in his hands.
This was so hard that I felt my blood vessels were about to burst.
In a critical moment, I immediately pressed the button on the seat. If I could recline the seat at this time, there might still be a chance of escape.
But I forgot.
This car would slowly recline its seats at the most comfortable and slow pace.
It might be to protect the back, or it might be to enable people to have a good sleep when they were tired.
At this slow pace, everything before my eyes went black.
