Chapter 9
Chapter 9
The man hadn’t said a word for about a few seconds. Rory was standing next to Eren with her head bowed, and he was staring at her.
“Father.” The youngest son of Mr. Khan, Peter, who was older than Eren in age, leaned close to his father. “Question him regarding the hospital.” He said.
“Is she a new maid?” Instead, Mr. Khan had questioned while pointing and glancing at Jessie. "The last time I came here, I didn't see her. What became of your previous one?” He asked.
Eren raised his brows. “Why are you here, Uncle?” After asking, he laughed. "I am aware that it is not about breakfast. What do you really want?”
“Father came here to...”
“Once breakfast is finished, I'll tell him myself.” Mr. Khan spoke without allowing his younger son to finish.
Despite being twins, Liam and Jack didn't resemble one another. On the chair, they had been silent. When one of the boys' eyes landed on Rory's, she lowered her head as soon as she made eye contact with him.
She must have been crazy to look up at the young masters. She spoke internally.
Liam's discomfort in his seat had been noted by Jack. “Before Father becomes irate once more, you should gather yourself.”
As he sat up straight in obedience to his brother, Liam sighed, but Jack saw him turn his head back to Rory.
“You, my brother, have poor taste.” He grinned.
"Don't mistreat this one the same way you mistreat the club girls I stare at." Liam spoke to him in a whisper. He gritted his teeth. Liam wouldn't want Jack to bother the maid who had been standing next to his cousin. Jack was troubled and found enjoyment in everything.
While Rory's face was in his line of sight, Jack grinned. His hands were clenched together.
The food for which they had waited was now on the table.
At his brother, Jack turned to look. "How about we have some fun?"
Before bringing Eren's food to the table, Rory took a small plate and tasted everything. Once she was certain that nothing had been mixed in, she placed the plate down for him to eat. Eren wanted to have his meal by himself.
Rory was initially perplexed by the hand he extended to her, but after a few seconds, she realized what he needed, and handed him a spoon. Rory called. "Young master." Her back was still bent as she muttered to him. She asked, "Am I not supposed to feed you?"
"I'll handle it on my own. Don't move from where you are; just remain right next to me.” Rory returned to her position after hearing a whisper from him.
"Maid, you ought to help me taste my food as well." Eren was disgusted by Jack's naughty tone of voice when he spoke.
"Jack, you need to stop that. You're making her feel uneasy,” said Liam.
"What's the matter with you? She is a maid. If I ask his maid to do something for me, Eren isn't bothered.” He turned to face Eren. “Is that all right?” He asked.
Eren remained silent, but he was furious, and Rory had moved to Jack to follow his orders. After giving Jack his meal, she went back to be by Eren's side.
With his family present, he was unable to question Rory.
She might not be aware of the kind of work she has agreed to. She was exclusively his maid, so she couldn't have worked for anyone else. The cost of her services would be covered by him, not by his cousins, as he had hired her.
Eren placed the food in his mouth, then mumbled to himself as he chewed and then swallowed. He followed this pattern throughout his entire meal. He had always hated Jack. His hatred for his cousins has never changed.
Mr. Khan scowled as he turned to face his son. He told Jack, "You've got to behave yourself. With his maid, you shouldn't mess around.”
Frowning slightly, Eren shifted and set down his glass.
Liam set down his knife and fork. Picking up a dish of sweetmeats, he handed it to Peter, who had asked.
At the end of the table, Peter stood up and raised his glass after tasting the meat. “This is for the family,” he said as he made a toast.
Eren scowled at Peter from across the table.
“Not now, son. Not now.” His father said, making Peter sit back down and drink all the wine in his cup.
"You ought to have known why I'm here today," Mr. Khan remarked, as Eren wiped his lips with the napkin Rory had given him. On the table, the napkin was dropped.
“Actually, I do not.” Slowly, Eren shrugged.
"I'll have to remind you about it again then. It concerns the hospital. The chair has been empty ever since…” His throat was cleared. “The passing of my brother.” He completed. “Son, someone needs to be present.”
“I appreciate you bringing up the subject.” His chin was resting on his hands, which were set on the table. "I've actually been thinking about it for a while now."
"And what choices have you made? Who will keep the hospital running until your vision returns?”
"I will continue to run the hospital as I have for years."
Mr. Khan started to chuckle. “How do you think you'll keep up as time passes?” He asked Eren.
He scoffed and raised his chin, saying, "You know, I am more shocked at how knowledgeable you all are in this field, but none of you could find a donor for my eyes. Are you doing it in spite of me? Or do you intend to prevent me from being able to see again?”
“Father is only trying to help you, Eren," Liam said. “Perhaps this is one time when you ought to put your animosity aside and consider the good he is trying to do for the hospital and the reputation of our family.”
“The hospital belongs to my father. I'll handle it however I please, and if I don't want to offer the position to anyone, then no one should expect me to change my mind since my decisions are final.”
"Cuz, I don't believe you right now. The doctor literally said, you cannot see again. Why do you persist in holding out hope?” Jack shouted. “Give Dad the goddamn hospital and resume your normal lifestyle of managing your maids and changing them each month.”
“It's inappropriate for you to say that to him.” Turning to face Jack, Mr. Khan struck him in the face. “He is your family. One does not speak in such a way about their family.”
Jack used his hand to hold onto his face. "Nevertheless, father, I am his senior cousin.” Jack said in anger.
"I'm sorry about how he acted," Mr. Khan said to Eren.
Rory was able to make some sense of the family tree from where she was standing. The older man was obviously the young master's uncle, his father's brother, as the three boys seated next to him were his sons. Because of how he was sitting and how elegantly he carried himself as he sat on the chair, he exuded a lot of power.
His uncle might be the type of man who could accomplish anything he set his mind to. She had no idea that Eren's family were medical professionals. She had wanted to be a doctor too, but she didn't have the chance.
She was envious of the boys for having these dreams and pursuing them, but she also felt sympathy for Eren. Since he doesn't appear to be scared of anything or anyone, it is now her responsibility to protect him and be his eyes until the end of her contract at the mansion.
"I believe we are finished here," As he made an effort to stand up from the chair, Eren said. He had been affected by what Jack had said. Of course, he was hoping to see again, but even though that was meant to be the case, he wasn’t sure his father’s hospital would be taken care of the way he wanted if he handed it up to his uncle.
He got up from his chair and reached for his cane.
Both Mr. Khan and his three sons got to their feet.
Even though Eren couldn't, Jack could see how furious his father was.
"Dad will be so furious with you for talking," Jack, who was still sore from his father's previous slap, was whispered to by Peter.
“Eren, would you please think it over?” His old heavy voice spoke.
"Please give your daughters and Leo my regards. Mr. Lewis will see you to the door.” Rory followed Eren as he made his way out of the room.
“Mr. Lewis.” Mr. Khan called. "Perhaps it's time you spoke some sense into the young boy's head. He is visibly losing it, and it is obvious that he is still in mourning over the death of his parents. Taking him to the asylum, in my opinion, will be of help.” As they both made their way to the door, he said to Mr. Lewis.
"No, sir, he's not having any nightmares or thinking about his parents. Since I am the boy's guardian, I will look after him well.” When Mr. Lewis opened the door, Mr. Khan and his kids left.
