Chapter 24

Chapter 24
“I find it hard to believe the doctor bought that.” As they were returning to his room, Eren said. He had admitted to himself that Rory wasn't a particularly intelligent person.

“He trusted my words because I am a wise person,” In his face, she was robbing her winnings. She opened the door to his bedroom and entered with him, her chin held high.

Rory assisted Eren in settling down as they walked up to his bed. “Young master.”

“Hmm. What more have you got to say, Rory Anne Spears?”

"I came up with a scheme to get you into the park without Mr. Lewis knowing about it."

As she spoke, Eren felt a sudden pique of curiosity. “You did?” asked Eren. “What is your plan?” He added. He had hoped she wouldn't respond this time with YouTube.

“Well.” Rory's hands were tightly clasped. “It won’t be easy, but for us to accomplish that, you will need to make some changes to the mansion rules.”

"Let me hazard a guess—you got the idea for this plan from YouTube?"

Rory rolled her eyes. “No phones, remember?”

Eren nodded in agreement and stated, "That is true. Then tell me. What adjustments will I need to make in order to leave without anyone noticing?”

"You will need to set aside a day for Maid's Day every month."

“Maid’s Day? Really? That was the strategy you thought of?"

"Young master, pay attention to what comes next. I'm not finished yet.” Rory pouted her lips before continuing. "Today, I observed how worn-out the maids were after completing their duties. While my friend and I were talking, we came up with a what if. I know you have been doing a good job, but the maids seemed bored and exhausted.”

“What if?”

"What if we could visit the park on a specific day each month? We'll enjoy some ice cream and be glad to be back at work. We won't get bored as easily each time. There will be a topic for conversation. Those were the words of my friend.”

Eren gave it some thought for a moment. It was actually making sense, and if he told Mr. Lewis about it, he might be able to smuggle himself out of the mansion when the maids are preoccupied. “Hmm. That is reasonable. Your friend, therefore, developed this plan?”

Rory replied, "We both did. Young Master, would you like to change the rules and on what day?

"I need to think about it first, but if it doesn't work out for me, Rory Anne Spears, I'll make you regret it."

Rory forced a hard swallow. She didn't even consider whether or not it would be in the young master's favor. She only just gave Caroline's proposal some thought before approving it.

After a thought occurred to him, Eren spoke once more. "When will the results be available?"

They had returned to that subject.

"A couple days."

“If Mr. Lewis requests it tonight or calls the doctor, what do I do then?” Eren was about to shout when he realized that Rory had only been trying to help him find a way out. She helped him avoid a hospital visit.

“Young Master, I should be the one speaking. I convinced the doctor. I believe I am capable of managing Mr. Lewis.”

That evening, Mr. Lewis joined Eren at the dinner table, and afterward, when he had finished eating, he posed the query Eren had anticipated. “What did the doctor say? Did you get the result? Are you okay?”

Eren gave a nod. He gave Rory the go-ahead to begin speaking, using his other hand to signal her. “Mr. Lewis. I'll be the one speaking. The young master experienced a sudden headache while taking the test.” She told a lie, causing the spoon Eren was holding to slip from his grasp. How was she able to do that? How did her lies seem so effortless?

“Is he doing fine now?”

"He slept for a while after the test, and when he awoke, he was fine. He was probably worn out from the exam.”

“And the result? What about the result?” He asked.

"It will be released in a few days. Before producing a result, the recording, according to the doctor, needs to be analyzed.”

“Let me give him a call.”

“No!” Eren and Rory both responded right away.

Confounded, Mr. Lewis enquired, "What is going on?"

“Nothing, sir. The doctor assured us that everything was fine and that we would receive the test results in the mail in a few days.” Within seconds, Rory's voice went from being vivacious to being monotonous. “I broke his phone this morning by accident.”

Eren immediately spoke up so Mr. Lewis wouldn't yell at Rory. "I'm mostly to blame,"

“And when did you begin to acknowledge your errors, my boy?”

“I was the one who made that mistake. The phone that belonged to Mr. Webb would not have fallen and broken if I had not treated Rory the way I did.”

“And what did you do?” Mr. Lewis inquired. Eren had probably not done anything stupid to the maid, he hoped fervently. Fortunately, Rory's body was unbruised as he studied it. Eren may occasionally lose his composure, and the result isn't always what one would expect.

"I pushed her away from me and yelled at her. It was nothing serious.”

“Nothing serious? She needs to be changed immediately if you don't like how she works for you.”

“No.” Eren spoke up right away. "She has already expressed her regret and assured me that she won't do the same thing again."

Mr. Lewis' scowl subsided, and his habitual freedom of expression returned to its original setting. He wiped his mouth with the napkin after reaching for it. "I should give him some cash so he can buy a new phone."

"That's nothing to be concerned about. I've already given him money to buy a new phone for himself,” said Eren.

Mr. Lewis got out of the chair. "Return the young master to his room and arrange for an early bedtime. Make sure he doesn't stay up late until his results are in.” Before leaving, he said to Rory.

Eren scowled as he stood up as well. “Tomorrow morning, I'll discuss maid's day with him. I'm sick of being locked up here.”

Back in his room, Rory assisted him in putting his clothes away so he could shower and get ready for bed. And seeing his shirtless body as they approached the bedroom, her heart had begun to beat frantically at the mere thought of it. She unintentionally lost her concentration and was about to fall. Fortunately, Eren caught her before she fell. She was barely more than a millimeter from him, wrapped between both of his arms.

She was lying with her head in his chest. One part of Rory wanted to bridge the distance between them. Her heart was racing out of control. But another part of her kept repeating the word “money.” in her head.

“Thank you.” Rory slowly let go of him once she realized she had been in his arms for longer than minutes, but Eren understood. He was consoling her because she was merely afraid. That is what was taking place between them. Nothing more.

“You should be careful, Rory Anne Spears. Not every time will I be there to protect you from harm. I'm blind.”

He was correct. The next time, he wouldn't be able to protect her. It was pure luck this time. She might trip over the next time and hit her head on the floor, and then she could... die.

Oh my goodness, what was she thinking about?

"Thank you so much for saving me. You didn't treat me that way tonight, despite the fact that I'm just a maid.”

"I would have saved anyone the same way I saved you if I could see them and they were in danger."

She knew he wasn't a cruel man after all, but sadly, the other maids didn't.

He grinned and said, "Just be careful, Rory Anne Spears," and she tried. She tried so hard to look away from his face, but she was unable to do so. Her eyes were adhered to his skin as if they were glue mixed with wet paper. If that makes sense. “Hold my hand so that you won't trip again,” he said.

She extended her hand to take his outstretched hand as instructed. Eren gripped her hand firmly while using his other hand to support his cane. Rory felt safe even though she was—at that moment—just his sights as they both entered the bathroom.
