Chapter 23
Chapter 23
“Hey Rookie! My office now!” Emily remarked as soon as Mason entered through the door. She had noticed that he had seen her, but he continued to walk with his eyes fixed ahead, as if he hadn't noticed her waiting outside the hospital entrance as he entered.
Mason suddenly came to a stop in his tracks and turned to face Emily. What had he done to make her call him into her office? Was it about last night? Emily walked by him, jiggling her ponytail behind her as she moved. From the clothes she was wearing, Mason had also deduced that she had just arrived at the hospital. He trailed behind her.
She picked up her coat from where it had been hung as soon as she walked into the office, put it on, and went straight to her desk. After taking a seat, Emily raised her head to look at Mason, who was standing by the closed door. His hands were both behind his back. “I won't bite you, rookie.” She motioned for him to approach, telling him to get closer.
Exhaling, Mason moved toward her desk. He was unsure of the purpose of her calling him to her office. He hadn't done anything wrong, if he had to think about it. He had made sure to finish all of his work before going to see Roland. The two of them then left right away for home.
"Emily, I have something to say before you speak."
Waiting for him to say what he had to say, Emily's eyes narrowed. He hadn't done anything wrong. Instead, she called him into her office to give him a compliment and to also write her statement about how well he had done on his first day to present to the chairman later.
Emily put her hands in a fist and put her chin on them. Mason waited for her reply. “Well, Mason, continue.” After a brief pause during which she waited for him to finish what he had to say, Emily spoke. When he didn't, she felt compelled to say something.
“Why do you hate me so much?”
“Hate you?”
"I got to be the only one in the room yesterday who did the most work, and I wasn't even the only newbie. You told those individuals—who were also from my department—to watch as I completed the task. I don't think it's because I'm a new employee; I think you're treating me unfairly for personal reasons.”
"Uh, is that true?"
"I'd just like to say that it's not at all fair. As the future owner of this hospital, I would appreciate it if you gave me less work the next time and treated me with respect.”
Emily lowered her head and released her grip on her hands as he spoke. She pulled out a blank sheet from the drawer after opening it.
After setting it down on the table, she grabbed a pen and started writing on it. “As the future owner of the hospital, I would appreciate it if you…” She penned the exact same sentence on the paper as she spoke it out loud.
“What are you doing?” Mason questioned when he noticed she was no longer looking at him and was instead writing on the paper.
Emily took a break from her writing and raised her head. She looked at him and said, “Writing a statement for your grandfather. You said you were the future owner of the Carter hospital, so I am writing it down for him to see.”
Mason suddenly grabbed the paper and dragged it off the table, knocking the pen off and sending it rolling to the floor. With his fist clenched tightly, he crumpled the paper. He didn’t squeeze the paper because he was scared of his grandfather. Instead, he did it to prevent his grandfather from venting his anger on Roland. The elderly man never misses an opportunity to make Roland atone for Mason's transgressions.
Just like when Roland was eighteen and he was sixteen. Mason had sneaked out of the house that Friday with his friends. He usually doesn't act that way, but on that particular day he just needed some space outside the mansion. He merely desired a break from his grandfather and mother's constant cavalier treatment. He was sick of being lavishly loved.
On the other hand, Roland had suffered consequences for not knowing where Mason was.
Roland was expected by his grandfather to be aware of Mason's whereabouts. It appeared as if he had come to the Carters' house for only that purpose.
Emily pointed to the paper and questioned, "Why did you do that?" Now she would have to write a new one. As soon as she reached for another piece of paper, Mason grabbed it once more and tore it to pieces.
“Stop doing that!” Mason yelled at her.
"You are so rude, Ou. Stop shouting at me like that before I double your work and make you pay for being disrespectful.” Before turning her attention back to Mason, Emily reached for her drawer and shut it. "Mason, I'm in charge of your care here at the hospital, and I also have a report to write for your grandfather. I won't have any more papers if you keep snatching or tearing them up.”
“Isn’t that the point?”
“No, that is not a good idea.”
“How so?”
"Your grandfather would think you are not living up to his name if I don't write a report. I am supposed to be the bad nurse who scares you and forces you to act in a certain way.”
Mason laughed sarcastically. “You are unbelievable. I can't believe you would write what I said in the paper about becoming the hospital's owner in the future and show it to my grandfather. Is he compensating you in some way?”
Emily rolled her eyes. “I thought the Carter heir wasn’t scared of the chairman.”
“I am not.” However, someone else was, and if his grandfather had his hands on that statement, Roland would...
Mason was completely unable to imagine what his grandfather would do to Roland this time. “Anyway, don't write that sentence, please. I beg of you.”
After a while, Emily gave up and clenched her hands once more. "You know, if you don't stress me, I will make things easy for you at this hospital, but if you do, I am the boss of making people regret things," she said.
"You mean, like getting the nickname, the Lion Lady?"
“Is that what they're calling me at the moment? I believed it to be Tigress or ABAE.”
“ABAE? What exactly was that meant to be? Always being ambitious, Emily?” Mason chuckled apprehensively, and he could bet a knuckle that Emily's response wasn't what he had anticipated.
"You nailed it. I am a driven individual who despises being held back or held back by others. It infuriates me and exposes a side of me that I'd rather people not see. Therefore, you shouldn't expose that aspect of me. We can be the best of friends as long as you behave, pay attention, and learn.”
Mason muttered, "Hmm." He was at a loss for words.
“Also, I wanted to let you know something before you earlier enraged me. What you did yesterday really impressed me.”
"Did you call me to your office for that reason? Was I not in trouble?”
“If you don't keep up the good work, you will be.” Mason received a folder from Emily after she reached out for it. “Take this.” Mason received the folder and then opened it. He turned to face her and awaited an explanation. "While you were away yesterday, I printed that out. I believe it will facilitate your transition here. The notes were written by my late uncle, and it is because of them that I am where I am today. Perhaps it will benefit you as well.”
"Why are you giving this to me?" In a low voice, Mason enquired. Perhaps Emily wasn't as bad as she seemed.
As she got out of her chair, Emily let out a breath. "Not all of the information you learn in medical school will make you a great doctor. You also need some knowledge from experienced people if you want to lead Carter Hospital into the future when you finally own it.”
“Thank you, Emily,” said Mason. If they had to face the truth, Emily was a woman in a man’s body, and that fact alone thrilled him. He had felt ashamed that he had inadvertently said something negative about her to Roland.
“It's Dr. Emily here at work. I value my status and respect. Come with me. We need to get to work.”
Emily made sure her hair was once again pulled back into a bun before they left her office. Mason entered the patient ward after Emily to tend to some patients. Not all doctors were as fortunate as he was. The fact that his grandfather owned the hospital allowed him to be given someone who would help him become a better doctor. Emily made sure Mason was by her side at all times and that he was taking notes as she treated the patients who had various illnesses.
