Chapter 15

Chapter 15
WASHINGTON

SAINT CARTER MEMORIAL HOSPITAL HEALTH CENTER.

Mason Carter was standing with coffee in his hand at the reception when he heard noises outside and quickly turned to look at the door.

“He had been hurt by a knife!” While pushing the stretcher into the hospital with the injured patient lying on it and screaming in pain, a doctor in her scrubs shouted as two additional doctors joined her.

“Get him to the ER. I'll be there right away.” She spoke as she stepped away from the stretcher's handle. The two doctors pushed the patient into the emergency room to examine his wound. Mason looked her in the eyes and then turned back to the front desk, flirting with the nurses.

The doctor called while placing both of her hands on her waist. “Rookie.” Mason didn’t turn until she walked up behind him and gave Mason a tap on the back.

After turning around, Mason grinned at her. “Me?” He asked. He had graduated from medical school with good grades, and it was his first time at his grandfather's hospital. Even though he didn't want to, his grandfather had made him become a doctor.

Mason, his father's only child, would inherit the hospital after his grandfather retired.

“Yes, you,” said Emily Cyrus. "Why aren't you in the ER?” she asked. She spoke again as Mason was about to respond. "I'll overlook it since this is your first day here and your cousin has given you into my care. Come along with me; you should watch as the patients receive medical care. You must be an expert in both theories and practicals given your high grades, right? We shall see about that.” Emily turned around and headed for the emergency room.

After locating the trash can, Mason placed the empty cup inside. He went to the emergency room as well.

“What's his condition?” Before approaching the patient they had earlier pushed in, Emily put on the gloves she had taken from the tray.

The male doctor replied. "Dr. Jackson took care of him. Fortunately, he won't require surgery.”

As she drew nearer to the patient, Emily used her hand to inspect the wound. She gently applied pressure to each side in hopes that the patient would react to the pain, which he did. It was nicely bandaged. She took the patient's file and began to look through it. She raised an eyebrow at the male doctor. “Where is Dr. Jackson currently?” asked Emily.

The male doctor replied. “He should be in his office.” She slowly nodded. She looked at Mason, whose eyes were looking all over.

"Check on every patient here; if you see anyone in pain or if they need anything, let me know. I will be in my office.” Emily swung around to face the open door.

“Me?” asked Mason, scoffing. He guessed she was unaware that the hospital she was controlling him in would eventually become his in the future.

Emily turned to look at him. “Yes, you, of course. Make sure you complete the task well so I can inform your grandfather.” With the file in her hand, she left the room.

So, she's aware, I suppose. Mason mutely remarked as he turned to face the patients in the room. He sighed. This crap his grandfather was subjecting him to was not something he agreed to.

When he was absolutely certain that Emily had left, the male doctor approached Mason. "She is in charge here. Wherever she is, nobody must make mistakes.”

No wonder his grandfather and cousin entrusted him to her hands.

“She will be fun.” Mason grinned as he turned to examine the patients, and after finishing, he made his way to his cousin's office.

Just like her sister Amelia, Emily Cyrus wasn't the kind of girl to take her father's advice.

Out of her siblings, she was always the headstrong one who loved having the upper hand. If perfect were a person, Emily would already have received a huge number of awards.

“I see the work you did again.” When Emily opened the door, she entered Dr. Jackson's office and said.

Jackson immediately paused the porn he was watching when he saw Emily approaching him. “Dr. Emily Cyrus. You are here,” he said agitatedly, as if he had been caught.

Emily threw the file onto his desk. "Now, Dr. Jackson, he is a patient of yours. You should take care of him since you treated him.” She folded her arms.

Before looking up at Emily, Jackson sighed and his eyes landed on the documents. "Emily, I did you a favor. Well…” Before continuing, he clenched his hands together and made them sound crackly. "As usual, you appear sophisticated. Is that a brand-new lipstick color?” Emily remained in place when he asked, not moving. Her arms were still folded on top of her chest.

"Dr. Jackson, I didn't come here for your praise. Immediately change the name of the person who treated him from mine to yours on the file.” Jackson's words prevented her from turning around and walking away. She swung around to face him. She asked, "What did you say?"

Jackson took a slow sip from his mug, looked up at her, and said, setting the mug on the table. "I heard that the chairman's grandson showed up today. If you want to win over the chairman, you should be gentle with his grandson. According to what I've heard, the chairman doesn't take his grandson for granted, and Mason will soon be the hospital's owner.”

Emily bit her bottom lip. “You have no idea how much the chairman favors me.” She breathed out while slightly cocking her head. “You have no idea of how close my father is with the chairman.” Gradually, she began to shake her head. "I am the only one who can make Mason the man of the chairman's dreams, and if I were you, I wouldn't be watching porn at work. You have no shame, Dr. Jackson. Absolutely no shame.” Jackson was at a loss for words when Emily turned to the door and left his office.

He folded his hand tightly while banging it against the table. She had always made him feel foolish, and one day he would bring that ego of hers down.

In his cousin's office, Mason sat back on the plush couch and crossed his legs over one another.

“You should be at the ER.” Roland turned away from the document he was reading to look at his cousin.

While getting comfortable on the couch, Mason sighed. He complained. “You are so lucky you didn’t have to go through what I am going through.”

“And what are you going through?” Roland asked.

Mason cried out. "I wish Grandpa could understand that I could manage the hospital without studying medicine. You didn't, and now look at you, making him proud.”

Roland slid off his glasses and closed the file. He placed his glasses on the table and massaged his eyes.

He sighed and rose from his seat to walk over to Mason. "You are Carter's heir and I am not. Grandpa wants the best for you, so I believe you shouldn't complain.”

"I find it unbelievable that you would entrust me to a woman."

“You mean Emily?” As he sat down next to his cousin, Roland started to laugh. Growing up, they had a good relationship. Mason's closest friend was Roland.
Roland was Mason’s only friend, and Mason told him everything, including the girls that had a crush on him while in medical school. Roland never once felt resentful that his cousin would eventually inherit the hospital one day.

Mason gave a nod.

“She's a man, not a woman. She puts in a lot of effort. Grandpa likes her, which makes sense. He had suggested that I entrust her with your care, and I have no doubt that she will do a good job of developing you into a better doctor.”

Roland's grin caught Mason's attention. “Do you like her or something?” He asked.

“What?” Roland pretended he wasn't listening to what Mason was saying.

“Do you have a crush on her?”

As he scoffed, Roland started to laugh. He quickly shook his head. “No, no. I don’t. Despite the fact that she is gorgeous, I prefer my woman to act more like a woman than a man. On the other hand, Emily wants to be in charge. It really turns me off.”

“I know. She has no idea that she will be the first person I fire when I finally become the owner of this hospital. She is very commanding, which is not sexy.”

While looking at Mason, Roland checked the time on his watch. “You should return to the ER. She won't spare you if she finds out you're gone, and believe me, you don't want Grandpa to think you're a useless and irresponsible person.” Roland lightly touched Mason’s shoulder as he stood up from the couch. He reached out and Mason put his hand in his as Roland drew him up. "Like uncle, you are the pride of the family. Make sure you make Grandpa proud. Go on.” Mason sighed as Roland gently pushed him to the door. Then he exited his cousin's office.

The day was going to be long. He could feel it.
