Chapter 203
Chapter 203
Lina's POV
The autumn evening air carried winter's promise as I stepped into the courtyard, Aeron in my arms. Royal guards assembled beneath flickering torches, their light dancing across stone archways. My deep blue velvet gown rustled softly, complementing the braided crown in my golden hair.
Augustus emerged from the main hall, his black and gold ceremonial robes catching the firelight. Dragon scale patterns embroidered across the fabric shimmered with life. When his golden eyes found mine, something warm passed between us—a look I had grown to recognize since Aeron's birth.
He approached, extending his arms toward our son. "May I?" As he lifted Aeron, the baby's tiny golden scales caught the torchlight. Augustus's hand found mine, fingers intertwining. "First we'll pay respects to the ancestors, then I want to show you the most magnificent view this fortress offers."
Without understanding why, I tightened my grip on his hand.
The Ancestral Hall loomed before us, massive dragon skeletons suspended from vaulted ceilings. Eternal dragonfire burned in ceremonial braziers as the court ritualist explained tomorrow's ceremony with meticulous detail.
"At dawn, the sacrificial rites commence here," he intoned. "By noon, the procession ascends to the Star Crown Platform for public acclamation. His Majesty will place the Dragon Queen's crown upon your head, and you will recite the oath of fealty."
I listened intently, cataloging each step. Augustus leaned close occasionally, his breath warm against my ear as he added quiet explanations.
"The Dragon Queen must stand at the highest point," the ritualist continued solemnly, "displaying the Dragon King's mark to prove the blood bond between sovereign and consort."
My hand moved instinctively to my neck, where Augustus's healed mark lay hidden beneath braided hair—a permanent reminder that sent complex emotions through me.
Augustus led me toward narrow stone stairs spiraling upward into darkness. The steps were steep and treacherous, Gothic railings revealing glimpses of the yawning chasm below. He climbed ahead, pausing every few steps to offer his steadying hand.
"Slowly," he murmured, golden eyes watching carefully. "There's no need to rush."
I gathered my skirts, breathing growing labored as we climbed higher. Anticipation built in my chest—when had I begun to welcome his presence rather than endure it?
At the final step, Augustus placed both hands on my waist, lifting me smoothly onto the platform. The gesture felt protective rather than possessive.
The view stole my breath entirely.
Wyrmspire Citadel spread below in gothic majesty, every spire illuminated against the star-filled sky. Beyond the walls, distant lights twinkled like fallen stars while the moat reflected moonlight in silver ribbons. I moved toward the stone parapet, wind whipping my hair as vertigo made my heart race.
Augustus approached from behind, arms encircling my waist, chin resting on my shoulder. His voice was low and intimate: "Lina, remember this place. Tomorrow at noon, you'll stand beside me, accepting homage from every soul in this realm. From that moment forward, this continent, this fortress, and I... we'll all belong to you."
My heart beat faster—not from fear, but from something more dangerous: hope. I felt his solid warmth, steady breathing, absolute certainty. For the first time in memory, trust stirred within me.
The wind grew colder. Augustus unfastened his dragon king cloak, wrapping it around us both, pulling me back against his chest. I leaned into him, eyes fixed on lights scattered below. Surrounded by his strength and protection, I finally admitted what I'd been fighting—I could no longer imagine leaving this man.
Slowly, I turned to face him. His golden pupils dilated as they met mine, reflecting something achingly vulnerable—careful hope mixed with fear of rejection hidden behind royal composure.
I lifted my hands to cup his face, fingertips tracing sharp cheekbones and jaw. His breath caught and he went still, afraid any movement might shatter this moment.
Rising on my toes, I pressed my lips to his.
Augustus froze completely, golden eyes widening in shock. I felt tension in every line of his body as he held himself rigid. Taking initiative, I bit gently on his lower lip, tasting sweet metallic blood.
That small pain shattered his control. With a desperate sound, Augustus backed me against the stone wall and cupped my face. His kiss was hungry and fierce, months of longing pouring out between us. Blood mingled on our lips as the kiss grew wilder. I heard myself whispering against his mouth: "Augustus... Augustus..."
When we broke apart, both breathing hard, Augustus rested his forehead against mine, golden eyes bright with unshed tears, voice rough with emotion.
"I swear on my life," he said, words carrying sacred weight, "I will protect you and Aeron with everything I have. I will never give you cause to regret this choice."
I couldn't find words—my heart too full, emotions overwhelming. I buried my face in his chest, tears dampening his robes as he held me close under the starlit sky.
