Chapter 194

Chapter 194
Lina's POV

The combination of his warmth, the late hour, and the day's emotional intensity was beginning to take its toll. A wave of drowsiness washed over me, making my eyelids feel heavy.

"I'm getting sleepy," I murmured, my words slightly slurred with approaching sleep.

"Then sleep," he replied, his voice a low rumble of contentment. He pressed another kiss to my forehead, this one lingering and tender. "I'll stay with you through the night."

Just as I was beginning to drift toward unconsciousness, Augustus spoke again. "Lina, have you thought about what we should name the child?"

The question surprised me enough that I forced my eyes open, studying his face in the golden candlelight. "I... I haven't really considered it."

"Then start thinking about it now," he said with the same seriousness he brought to matters of state. "This is important to me."

"Why should I be the one to choose?" I asked, genuinely puzzled. "According to royal tradition, shouldn't you be the one to name the heir? The child will carry your bloodline, after all."

"Because you're the child's mother," he replied without hesitation, as if the answer should be obvious. "I want this baby's name to carry your hopes and blessings, not just the weight of royal expectation."

His sincerity made my throat tighten with emotion, though I couldn't help feeling inadequate for such a responsibility. "But I'm just a mixed-blood servant," I protested quietly. "I don't have much education or knowledge of proper royal names..."

"I don't care about any of that," he interrupted firmly, his golden eyes blazing with conviction. "What I want is a name that comes from your heart, something you truly want to give our child."

"Alright," I whispered, overwhelmed by the trust he was placing in me. "I'll think about it seriously. I promise. But I really am tired now..."

"Then sleep," he murmured, gathering me closer against his side so that my head rested in the hollow of his shoulder. "We have plenty of time to discuss it."

I closed my eyes and let myself sink into the comfort of his embrace. Outside the crystal windows, the wind had begun to pick up, carrying with it the distant rumble of approaching thunder.

Just as I was on the very edge of sleep, a tremendous crack of thunder exploded directly overhead, so loud and sudden that it seemed to shake the citadel's foundations.

"Ah!" The cry escaped me before I could stop it, and I found myself burrowing instinctively into Augustus's chest, my heart hammering with startled fear.

I felt his chest vibrate with barely contained laughter. "I seem to remember someone telling me recently that she wasn't afraid of thunder," he said, his voice rich with teasing affection.

The realization that my automatic reaction had completely betrayed my earlier bravado made my cheeks burn with embarrassment. "I..." I stammered, searching desperately for some way to salvage my dignity. "That was just a particularly loud one! Anyone would have been startled!"

"Was it?" His tone was positively wicked now, full of playful arrogance. "In that case, next time it thunders, you're not allowed to hide in my arms."

"I wasn't hiding!" I protested, though even I could hear how unconvincing it sounded.

His arms tightened around me in response, and he lowered his head until his lips were barely a breath away from my ear. "If you don't admit the truth," he whispered, his warm breath sending shivers down my spine, "I'll kiss you until you do. And I'll keep kissing you until you surrender completely."

The promise in his voice, combined with the memory of his increasingly passionate kisses over recent days, was enough to make me capitulate immediately. "Fine, fine! I'm afraid of thunder! I admit it completely! Are you satisfied now?"

"Very satisfied," he replied with obvious pleasure, sealing his victory with a gentle kiss pressed to the crown of my head. "That's my good girl."

Despite my embarrassment, I felt a warm glow at his praise. I tried to shift slightly, thinking to put a little distance between us, but Augustus apparently had other plans.

"Don't move," he commanded, his hand catching my wrist as I attempted to pull away. With gentle but inexorable pressure, he guided my arm around his waist. "Sleep exactly like this."

"You're being completely unreasonable," I muttered, though I made no further attempt to escape his embrace.

"I'm the Dragon King," he replied with shameless arrogance. "My word is absolute law, and reality itself bends to accommodate my will." His voice softened then, becoming almost vulnerable. "Besides... don't you want to hold me?"

The quiet question caught me completely off guard, stripping away all my protests and leaving me with nothing but honesty. The truth was that I did want this desperately.

"Do whatever you want," I said finally, relaxing completely into his warmth with a small sigh of surrender.
