Chapter 55 Birth and Betrayal
Chapter 55 Birth and Betrayal
(Lily POV)
Pain dragged me back to consciousness. Not the fuzzy, distant pain of sedation, but sharp, overwhelming, all-consuming pain that demanded attention.
I was having a baby.
My eyes fluttered open. The warehouse ceiling swam into focus above me, rusted metal beams, flickering fluorescent lights, water stains spreading like dark bruises across concrete.
"She's waking up." A voice I didn't recognize. Male. Accent.
Another contraction hit and I screamed, my back arching off the gurney. The sound echoed in the cavernous space.
"Finally."
That voice I knew. That voice haunted my nightmares.
Sarah stepped into my line of sight, her own pregnant belly prominent under a tight designer dress. She looked different than I remembered, harder, meaner, with dark circles under her eyes and a manic edge to her smile.
"Hello, Lily. Miss me?"
"Sarah." The word came out as a gasp. "Please... hospital... baby..."
"Oh, the baby will be fine." She stroked her own stomach. "My baby is due in two weeks. Yours is coming today. And then I'll have two beautiful children to raise with Alex once his lawyers get him out on appeal."
"You're... insane..."
"I'm practical." Sarah leaned closer, her breath hot on my face. "You destroyed my life, Lily. You took away my future with Alex. So I'm taking your baby. Fair trade, don't you think?"
Another contraction. I tried to curl into myself but leather straps held my wrists and ankles to the gurney.
"Please," I begged. "Don't do this. Whatever you want, money, testimony, anything, just don't take my baby."
"What I want is for you to suffer." Sarah's eyes glittered with hatred. "I want you to know that your baby will grow up calling me Mama. Will never know your name. Will be raised to believe their father is a successful businessman, not the monster you tried to make him out to be."
The "doctor" approached, I could see him clearly now. Thin, nervous, with shaking hands and bloodshot eyes. Definitely not a real doctor. Probably someone who'd lost their medical license or never had one.
"She's fully dilated," he said, examining me roughly. I tried to kick but the restraints held. "Baby is coming whether we're ready or not."
"Then deliver it," Sarah snapped. "And make sure it lives. I didn't go through all this trouble for a dead baby."
"Sarah, please." Tears streamed down my face. "This is my child. Please don't do this."
"Your child?" She laughed, the sound sharp and cruel. "You mean Alex's child. The baby conceived when he put you in your place. You should be thanking me for taking it, what kind of mother could you be anyway? Broken, traumatized, poor. I'm giving this baby a better life."
"You're giving it a life with murderers!"
Sarah slapped me hard across the face. "Watch your mouth. That baby will have everything, money, education, a two-parent household. What can you offer? A shelter room? A waitressing job? You're nothing, Lily. You've always been nothing."
Another contraction, stronger and longer. The pressure was unbearable. The baby was coming.
"I need to push," I gasped to the fake doctor.
"Then push," he said, positioning himself at the end of the gurney.
This wasn't how it was supposed to happen. I was supposed to be in a hospital with real doctors and clean equipment. I was supposed to have time to prepare, to decide if I was keeping the baby or giving it to that nice couple from the adoption agency.
I wasn't supposed to give birth in a warehouse while my psychotic ex-best friend stood over me planning to steal my child.
But the baby didn't care about my plans. The baby was coming.
I pushed, screaming with effort and pain and terror. Sarah watched with cold satisfaction. The scarred man and the linebacker stood guard by the door, occasionally glancing at their phones like this was just another job.
"Good, good," the fake doctor muttered. "I see head. Push again."
"I can't.."
"You can," Sarah said, her voice dripping with false sweetness. "Push, Lily. Bring my baby into the world."
Rage flooded through me. Not her baby. Mine. This was my baby, conceived in violence but grown inside my body, nourished by my blood, protected by my heartbeat for seven months.
No one was taking this baby from me.
I pushed with everything I had. The pain was beyond description, beyond anything I'd experienced, worse than Alex's beatings, worse than the mercury poisoning, worse than the assault.
"Head is out!" the fake doctor announced. "One more push."
Sarah moved closer, her hands outstretched like she was ready to catch the baby herself.
I gathered every ounce of strength left in my broken body and pushed.
The baby slid out with a gush of fluid and blood. For one terrible moment, there was silence.
Then a cry. Thin, weak, but definitely a cry.
"It's a girl," the fake doctor said, holding up a tiny, wrinkled, blood-covered infant.
My daughter.
I'd had a daughter.
"Give her to me," Sarah demanded, reaching out.
"Clean her first," the doctor said, moving to a table with supplies.
"Sarah, please," I begged, my voice hoarse from screaming. "Please don't do this. Let me hold her. Just once. Please."
For a moment, something flickered in Sarah's eyes. Something almost human. Then it was gone, replaced by that cold hatred.
"No. You don't deserve to hold her. You don't deserve anything."
The doctor wrapped my daughter in a dingy towel and handed her to Sarah. She took the baby awkwardly, staring down at the tiny face with a mixture of triumph and something else, possessiveness, maybe, or madness.
"She's perfect," Sarah whispered. "She'll be mine. Mine and Alex's."
"No!" I struggled against the restraints, ignoring the pain between my legs, ignoring the blood I could feel pooling beneath me. "Give her back! That's my baby!"
"Not anymore." Sarah turned to the scarred man. "We're leaving. Viktor will handle the cleanup."
"What about her?" The linebacker jerked his chin toward me.
Sarah looked at me with empty eyes. "Kill her. Make it look like she died in childbirth. Alone, desperate, no one to help her. A tragic ending for a tragic woman."
"Sarah, no!" I screamed. "Please! You can take the baby, just don't kill me! Please, I won't tell anyone, I'll disappear, just please.."
But she was already walking away, my daughter in her arms. I could hear the baby crying, that thin, desperate newborn cry, and it tore my heart apart.
"Mama's here," Sarah cooed to my child. "Mama's got you."
The door slammed shut behind her.
The scarred man pulled out a gun. "Viktor wants it quick. No suffering."
"Wait," the fake doctor said nervously. "I didn't sign up for murder. I was just supposed to deliver the baby."
"Then leave."
The doctor grabbed his bag and fled. I stared at the gun, my mind racing. This couldn't be how it ended. After everything I'd survived, I couldn't die here, strapped to a gurney in a warehouse, having just watched my baby being stolen.
My phone. Was it still in my pocket?
The scarred man checked his own phone. "Viktor says to wait. He wants to see the body. Make sure it's done right."
"How long?"
"Ten minutes."
Ten minutes. I had ten minutes to live.
Unless Tony had heard everything. Unless he was already on his way.
But even if he was, how would he find me? I didn't know where this warehouse was. I'd been half-conscious during the drive.
Another man entered, Viktor, I assumed. Older, with gray hair and dead eyes. He looked at me like I was a piece of meat.
"This is the woman causing all the problems?" he asked in heavily accented English.
"Yes, sir."
"And the baby?"
"Sarah took it. Left five minutes ago."
Viktor nodded. "Good. Now we finish this." He pulled out his own gun and walked toward me.
This was it. This was really it.
I closed my eyes, thinking of my daughter. Hoping against hope that somehow, someday, she'd know I loved her. That I'd tried to protect her. That I'd wanted to be her mother.
I heard the safety click off.
Then, sirens. Distant but getting closer. Viktor swore in Russian. "Police?"
"Don't know. FBI, maybe." The scarred man moved to the window. "Multiple vehicles. Coming fast."
"Sarah must have been followed." Viktor turned to his men. "We leave. Now. Forget the woman, we need to go."
"But.."
"Now!"
They ran. I heard car engines starting, tires squealing.
Then silence. I lay on the gurney, bleeding, exhausted, barely conscious. The sirens were getting closer.
Please, I thought. Please let Tony be with them. Please let him save my baby.
The warehouse door crashed open. Footsteps running.
"FBI! Anyone here?"
"Here!" I tried to shout, but it came out as a whisper. "Help... baby..."
More footsteps. Voices calling out. Then one voice, panicked and desperate.
"Lily!"
Tony.
He appeared above me, his face pale with shock as he took in the blood, the medical equipment, the restraints.
"Oh God. Lily." His hands shook as he worked to unbuckle the straps. "You're alive. Thank God, you're alive."
"The baby," I gasped. "Sarah took... my baby... girl... she took my daughter..."
"We'll find her." Tony freed my hands and I grabbed his shirt, pulling him close.
"Find her. Please. Sarah has her. She's going to... raise her... tell her lies... please, Tony..."
"Shhh. We'll find her. I promise." He looked up at someone I couldn't see. "I need paramedics! Now!"
Darkness was pulling at me. Blood loss, exhaustion, trauma, it was all too much.
"Tony..."
"Stay with me, Lily. Stay awake."
But I couldn't. I was sinking, drowning in darkness.
My last thought before unconsciousness took me was a prayer for my daughter.
Please keep her safe.
Please bring her home to me.
Please...
TONY POV - Brief Scene
I stood in the warehouse surrounded by FBI agents and paramedics working on Lily, my hands covered in her blood.
We tracked her phone signal. We'd raced here expecting to find her being held hostage, not having given birth alone in these horrific conditions.
"Mr. Stark." Agent Morrison, no relation to Alex, thank God, approached. "We found something."
He led me to a corner of the warehouse. There, on the concrete floor, was a pool of blood and something else.
A baby's cry.
I spun around, searching for the source. An FBI agent was opening a supply closet.
Inside, wrapped in a filthy towel and left on the floor, was a tiny infant. Crying weakly. Abandoned.
"They left the baby," the agent said in disbelief.
They hadn't. Sarah had taken Lily's baby. Which meant this was—
"That's Sarah's baby," I realized. "She went into labor early. She left her own child and took Lily's."
The agent picked up the infant carefully. "We need an ambulance for this one too."
I looked back at Lily, unconscious on the gurney. Her daughter was gone, stolen by a madwoman. And Sarah had left her own baby behind like garbage.
The warehouse was empty except for us, bloodstains, and the cry of a child abandoned by her mother. Somewhere out there, Sarah was running with a newborn she'd stolen. And I had no idea how to find them..
