47|Is That Even Possible?

What hit me was a massive and strong wolf, it dragged me down, rolling us on the forest floor. The ground was rough and cold. Dirt, dried leaves, and dew soiled my clothes. I sank my fingers on the ground when I had the chance, kicking the wolf on its side, and suspended myself from rolling down. Hands and feet scraping the ground, I grunted as I glared at the wolf that attacked me, ready to shift and fight back.

I squinted when my vision became clear, the moonlight allowing me to see my attacker. The wolf was midnight black, bigger than a regular one because of its alpha bloodline, and I knew this wolf very well.

“Spade!” My voice was caught between surprised and annoyed, my heart still racing because I thought an enemy had attacked me.

‘Heard you were in the mood,’ he murmured through the mindlink, his eyes going round as he tilted his head.

I dusted the dried leaves off of my dress, the scratches on my elbows and legs already healing. Then I run my fingers through my hair and answer Spade. “Who said that?”

‘Alpha Seth,’ he said, his paws silently pounding on the ground as he neared me. He nudges my cheek with his nose. It was cold and wet.

“Ew!” I shoved his face, my face pruning. “When did you and Alpha Seth become best buddies?”

‘Since Declan called me to come and take care of you,’ he said, hunching down beside me.

“He called you?” I pried as Spade crouched down on his legs, allowing me to sit on his back.

‘He did,’ Spade murmured. ‘And we have a lot to talk about, but I need to be out of my fur. I’ve been running since this morning.’

“Fine,” I threw my legs over his back and held on tight as he snaked his way through the forest at hyper speed.

Riding on Spade’s back was something I hadn’t done in a while. This was his way of calming my weary mind, just like what Declan used to do before. Being fast in my wolf form was nice, but being able to ride the wind, watch as Spade evaded knocking down trees after trees, made me feel free, elated.

I sat there on his Spade’s back, wishing the wind would sweep away my worries, confusion, and problems. But all good things come to an end. Spade reached the Hawkins mansion in a heartbeat, ending the calm he brought with him.

Alpha Seth was waiting for us outside the mansion. A woman in her late teens was standing beside him, holding a neatly folded set of clothes.

When Spade paused in front of Alpha Seth, I slid down from his back, my skin gliding down his smooth and soft fur. Then I turned my back on Spade as he shifted in his human form. The cheeks of the girl holding the clothes turned beet-red as Spade reached for the clothes she was holding. Spade winked at her. The girl turned redder, and even her hands were red.

I rolled my eyes as Spade got dressed in a shirt and jeans, Alpha Seth dismissing the girl before she exploded into a putty of blood, flesh, and bones.

“It's nice to have you back, Spade,” Alpha Seth murmured.

“It’s nice to be back, Alpha Seth. I missed this little rascal, too.” He reached for the top of my head, ruffling my hair. I glared at him, nudging his side with my elbow. He made an umph sound, but ignored me completely. “I hope she didn’t make such a mess while I was away.”

Alpha Seth slides his green eyes at me, his gaze thoughtful. “She actually helped the case a lot, but that’s not why you are here.”

Spade hummed. “Alpha Declan asked me to come.”

“Maybe we should talk over a drink?” Alpha Seth offered, motioning for us to follow him.

Spade and I trailed behind the alpha of Fallenmist pack, and he led us to the back of the mansion. There was a patio there overlooking the vast green forest inside the pack's territory. Fairy lights crawled up the pergola, and lantern lights illuminated the ground while the moon and stars were bright above us. This would’ve been a perfect place for a late-night drink, if only I could forget about my mate lying inside the infirmary.

I can feel his heartbeat. It was faint and weak, and our bond was getting quieter.

The girl who held Spade’s clothes was also the one who brought the drinks to us. A bottle of Glenfiddich and three glasses. She had her eyes pinned on the ground, cheeks still as red as a beetroot.

Spade was enjoying how he made the girl uncomfortable. He kept his gaze pinned on her while she poured us drinks. I had to stab Spade with my elbow, warning her to stop intimidating the girl.

Spade merely chuckled at me, winking at the girls as she thanked him.

“We got it,” Alpha Seth said. “You can have the night off, Stella.”

Spade watched Stella walk away. “Stella. That’s a nice name.”

“Her father is the commander of my guards, Spade,” Alpha Seth warned.

‘Even better,’ Spade said through the mindlink.

I glowered at him and said. ‘You want to start a war?’

‘Not a war if she’ll want me, Heart.’

I narrowed my eyes at him. ‘You’re impossible.’

Alpha Seth cleared his throat, grabbing our attention back onto the world outside our mindlink. “So, what did Declan want?”

Spade took a mouthful of his whiskey. “His instructions were vague. He just asked me to be here before this day ends because he said Heart would need me on her side. What happened to him, anyway?”

I had to grab my drink and take a sip as Alpha Seth explained Declan’s current state to Spade. “We don’t know how the hunters caught him, but Heart and Jared saved him. But something is not right with him. His wounds aren’t healing. Our pack doctor tried everything, even magic.”

“Hmm,” Spade hummed, looking not a bit surprised by what he heard. “Before that, did something happen?”

“Heart, she’s experiencing the heat,” Alpha Seth explained, reminding me of why I came here at the Hawkin’s estate in the first place.

Come to think of it. I haven’t felt the heat, and not a single wolf has come my way since we’ve been searching for Declan.

“I guess you know the answer now,” Spade directed his statement at me.

Alpha Seth anxiously waited for me to answer Spade. “You mean he’s purposely allowing himself to die?”

“I think so,” Spade mumbled. “What did he say to you?”

“‘I would give up my life so you’d be free,’ that’s what he said to me in the car.” I slumped back in my seat, feeling my bones turning to jelly as my blood ran cold. “Is that even possible? Can a wolf really allow himself to die?”

“He’s an Alpha, Heart, and he’s a strong one, too. If his wolf agreed with him, they could suppress their ability to heal if they wanted,” answered Spade.

“If you’re right, how are we going to cure him?” Alpha Seth pried, a pinch of worry flickering in his eyes.

“I have no idea,” Spade murmured.
