Loyalty or Love

Loyalty or Love

The chamber was dimly lit, the air reeking faintly of iron and old blood. Alfonso leaned against the tall-backed chair like a king surveying his court, his red eyes gleaming with cold amusement. Across from him, Henry stood stiffly, his wolf aura dampened by the oppressive weight of the vampire’s domain.

“You came,” Alfonso drawled, swirling the crimson wine in his glass. “I almost doubted you had the stomach for true betrayal.”

Henry’s jaw flexed, but he kept his voice steady. “Don’t mistake me for weak. I’m not doing this for you. I’m doing it for Erin.”

Alfonso chuckled, sharp and low. “Ah yes… Erin. The hybrid, the storm-child, the girl you cannot have.” His smirk widened. “How noble of you to cloak jealousy in the guise of protection.”

Henry’s fists clenched, but he didn’t rise to the bait. “Just tell me the plan.”

Alfonso’s gaze flicked like a blade. “Simple. We trap the Alpha. Nick has become… inconvenient. Too strong, too inspiring. His wolves rally around him, his bond with the girl deepens, and worse still—he’s dangerous enough to be a thorn in my empire. So we pluck him from his throne.”

He unfurled a map on the table between them, marked with red ink and strange glyphs. “My forces will ambush his patrol route near the northern forest. But he won’t die there—no, not yet. You’ll be the lure, Henry. The one he trusts enough to follow.”

Henry’s throat tightened. “And once he’s trapped?”

Alfonso’s grin revealed the sharpness of his fangs. “We break him. Humiliation before death. Imagine Erin’s despair when her beloved Alpha is dragged before the Council in chains.”

Henry hesitated, guilt warring with envy in his chest. A voice inside screamed that this was too far. But then came the image—Erin choosing Nick, laughing with him, kissing him under the moonlight. It burned.

He forced himself to nod. “I’ll do it. I’ll get him there.”

Alfonso leaned closer, his hand heavy on Henry’s shoulder. “Good wolf. Play your part well, and you may yet rewrite your destiny.”

Inwardly, Henry felt the last shreds of his loyalty to his pack tearing apart, but he smothered it. If betraying Nick meant Erin might be his one day, then he would walk through fire itself.

The underground chamber smelled of smoke and damp stone, candles flickering against walls etched with old vampire sigils. Alfonso stood at the far end, cloaked in shadow, calmly pouring himself a glass of bloodwine. Henry stormed in, the growl already rising in his throat.

“You stay away from Erin,” Henry spat, his fists trembling at his sides. “She’s not yours to use. Not for your schemes, not for your hunger.”

Alfonso’s head tilted, amused rather than threatened. “Ah. Finally, the wolf bares his teeth.” He sipped the wine slowly, savoring it, then placed the goblet down with deliberate grace. “You think you can dictate terms to me? To me, boy?”

Henry snarled, stepping closer. “You made me spy, you made me lie to my own pack, but Erin—she’s not a pawn in your game. If you even touch her—”

Alfonso’s laughter cut him off, sharp as breaking glass. He moved in a blur, faster than Henry could react, his hand clamping around Henry’s jaw, forcing him to look into his burning red eyes.

“You forget yourself,” Alfonso whispered, his voice laced with cruel power. “Who found you, broken and starving, after your own kind abandoned you? Who fed you, sheltered you, gave you purpose when the wolves cast you aside?” His grip tightened, nails piercing Henry’s skin. “I did.”

Henry’s breath came ragged, memories flooding back—dark nights, hunger gnawing at his belly, the bitter taste of shame when his pack had turned their backs. Alfonso’s hand offering him food, his voice promising survival.

“I could’ve let you die like the dog you were,” Alfonso hissed. “But I didn’t. I raised you. I made you strong. And this—” his eyes gleamed with dark triumph—“this is how you repay me? By snarling at the hand that kept you alive?”

Henry’s eyes flickered, shame and rage twisting inside him. He wrenched his jaw free, growling low. “I owe you my life, yes. But Erin… she’s different. She deserves more than your chains.”

Alfonso leaned back, smile razor-sharp. “You think you can save her from me? Foolish pup. You’ll come to see the truth—she belongs to power. And power always wins.”

Henry’s heart pounded. For the first time, he realized Alfonso wasn’t just his savior. He was his jailer. And now, Erin was caught in the middle of their tangled web.

The chamber echoed with the scrape of Alfonso’s boots as he turned, eyes glowing with sinister delight.

“Let’s settle this then, little wolf,” Alfonso purred, his voice silky with malice. “You want to keep Erin safe? You think she’s yours to protect? Then fight me. If you win, I’ll leave her untouched. But if you lose…” His fangs gleamed as he smiled. “She’s mine.”

Henry’s blood roared in his ears. His body shook—not from fear, but from rage. He stripped off his torn shirt and shifted, bones cracking as fur rippled across his skin, his wolf form towering in the dim light. His golden eyes burned with defiance.

“Deal,” Henry snarled.

Alfonso didn’t shift, didn’t even posture. He merely spread his arms, letting the vampire power radiate from him like a storm. “Come, then. Show me your loyalty.”

Henry lunged, claws outstretched, aiming for Alfonso’s throat. For a heartbeat, he thought he might land the strike—but Alfonso vanished in a blur. Pain exploded across Henry’s back as Alfonso’s claws raked him open, sending him crashing to the stone floor.

“Too slow,” Alfonso mocked.

Henry roared and spun, slashing wildly, forcing Alfonso back. He landed a strike across Alfonso’s chest, tearing cloth and skin. For the first time, Alfonso hissed in annoyance. Henry felt a surge of hope—maybe he could win.

Then Alfonso’s eyes burned crimson.

In a blink, Alfonso was on him, moving faster than Henry’s eyes could follow. A fist like iron smashed into Henry’s jaw, sending him flying into the wall. Before he could recover, Alfonso pinned him by the throat, lifting him off the ground as though he weighed nothing.

“You thought love would make you strong?” Alfonso sneered. “It only makes you weak.”

Henry thrashed, claws gouging at Alfonso’s arms, but the vampire king’s grip was unyielding. His lungs screamed for air. His vision blurred. With a final savage twist, Alfonso hurled Henry across the chamber. He hit the floor with a sickening crack, unable to rise.

Alfonso stood over him, immaculate once more despite the shallow wound across his chest. His grin was cruel, victorious.

“Pathetic,” he whispered, crouching down to brush blood from Henry’s muzzle. “Did you truly think you could claim her? Erin belongs to me now. And you…” Alfonso’s voice lowered to a venomous hiss, “you will live with the shame of your failure.”

Henry’s eyes burned with tears of rage as darkness closed in.
