Chapter 22: You Deserve Better Than This

Sophie

“Yes,” Nathan replied and kissed my lips but I immediately pulled away.

I wasn't used to this with him, in fact I hated it right now. I was in too much shock to even care that he just kissed me, I pulled away to watch him in shock but he just furrowed his eyebrows.

“What is the matter? I thought I told you to never refuse me?”

“No..no, Nathan. I..I am just trying to wrap my head around the fact that I can go shopping.” I defended myself.

“What are we going to do shopping for?” I asked.

“For our wedding.” He beamed with a smile and it only caused all my hopes to just shatter, I was reminded of something that would just ruin my life. Now I suddenly was uninterested in going shopping with him because I knew how bad it was going to affect me.

After Gabriel announced that the wedding was going to take place in two weeks, I had countless sleepless nights. I couldn't get it out of my head because ever since then, my head wrapped around the idea of just running away before the wedding day approaches. However, the only thing stopping me was that if I did, my mother would be the one to suffer the consequences and I was not giin to encourage that at all.

“W..when?” I asked, feeling how dry my throat was.

“Soon,” he muttered.

“In the meantime, we should sleep. Come on.” He stood up and took my hand in his before he began to walk back into the room and pushed me onto the bed.

I landed on my side with a soft thud as my heart began to race and I feared like any other day I would. He watched me with a very stern look before he turned around and then walked to his side of the bed. I let out a breath of relief when I tuck myself in only to have him harshly wrapped his arms around my waist before he pulled me closer to him.

“Goodnight, darling.” He muttered as he buried his face in my hair, I relaxed my muscles as I felt relieved that he was going to go to sleep and that means I could rest unlike any other night.

“Sophie?”

I turned around and glanced over my shoulder to see my mother standing at the door with a plate of food. I dropped the essentials that were in my hands on the bed and turned around to face her before my lips broke.

“Mother,” I croaked out.

Sorrow filled her face as she entered the room and placed the plate down, she closed the door behind her and walked over to me. She engulfed me in her embrace. My throat felt very heavy, like they were going to close up because of how long I kept it inside of me. I wrapped my arms around her and didn't realize that I had begun to sob as she provided me the comfort that I always seek for. She was my absolute rock and ever since Romano died, she was the only source that kept me going.

“Mother, I can't do this, I don't want to marry him.” I cried on her shoulder.

“I know, dear, I know.” She pulled me away from her and cupped my face as he wiped my tears away.

“You are not going to marry him, do you hear me?” Her eyes were bloodshot red as she glared at me. I licked my lips and blinked at her as I wondered what was on her mind.

“What.. what do you mean?” I sniffed as I gaze deeply into her eyes.

“Run away, Sophie.” He suggested it and my stomach dropped. I began to shake my head, refusing.

“No, Sophie, you have to listen to me. It is the best thing to do right now.”

“And leave you here? No, I..I can't leave you. That is not going to happen.” I refused, I can't leave her here, not in hell.

“Sweetheart,” she cooed as she cupped my cheeks with her soft delicate hands, her voice began to crack again and her eyes leaked with her tears.

“My sweet angel, listen, you have got to understand that there is no way out for you. If you don't run away, you will end up marrying him. I am going to help you escape before the wedding takes place.” She explained as she fiddled with the strands of my hair and used her pleading voice to try to get to reasoning. I shook my head again and refused to encourage this idea in any way.

“I will only do this if you join me.” I said and let go of my hand, signed in frustration.

“You can't handle this, you can't handle Gabriel anymore and the longer you stay, the more possibility of you staying alive.” I took her and clenched it, trying to convince her.

“Mother, you deserve better than this, you deserve a good life to live.”

She watched me with doting eyes as she cupped my cheeks and pulled in to place a tender kiss on my forehead. She let out a shaky breath as she hugged me and then squeezed me tight in her hold.

“What did I ever do to deserve a daughter like you, my love?” She chuckled

“I love you, sweetheart, you know that right?”

“I love you too, mother.” I chuckled.

Our embrace was cut short when a roar broke out from the other side of the door, she immediately pulled away from me and we just stared at each other with our eyes wide open. I gave her a very confused look before she let go of my arms and opened the door.

“What the hell?” Gabriel's roara was the loudest and it made my heart drop to my stomach. I reached the door with my mother by my side and gulped before we walked out of the room and reached the bottom of the stairs.

Everyone was present in the spacious living room and one thing horrified me was that from the top of the stairs, I noticed a casket. I turned my gaze to Nathan and saw that he was in pure anger as he was walking back and forth while my mother stood beside me with a mortified expression.

“M..mother, what is happening?” I whispered.

However, she didn't say anything but tremble as she glared at the casket. I looked away from her and glanced at the casket again. Right there in front of all our eyes laid a head, not just any dead body but it was Marco's dead body.

Marco Nunez was my half brother, a half brother I had no idea about until a few years ago. My mother knew about this secret son Gabriel has but couldn't really say anything and it actually broke  knowing that while he was married to her, he went behind her back and cheated. Marco was less of Nathan and Gabriel, in fact he was just like them, vile, cruel and cold hearted and there was nothing we could do about it. To be honest, I didn't even know who Marco was but all I knew is that he participated in Gabriel's dirty works. We never spoke to each other like siblings would because I never saw him, he was older than me which made it difficult between us because he always thought he was the better one. Even though I didn't know him, I still loathe him.

His body was completely atrocious, there was no chance of him living. Whoever has done this, was the most brutal and murderous a person could ever get. As I looked closer, his neck was sliced open as dry blood oozed out of the deep wound and he was handless. His chest was full of bullets as dry blood escaped from his mouth.

“We have to act fast, we can't have dead bodies of our own just turn up like this.” Nathan growled like a mad dog.

“Don't you think I know that?” My father retorted as he seemed shaken up. His eyes were red before he turned his gaze to his guard dog and his glare was viscous.

“You fuckers are useless, how could you let this happen?” He scolded his men who had their heads bowed down.

“Useless piece of shits!” He spat and stormed off upstairs.

“This was gruesome but it was something I come across everyday and everywhere I go. Nathan and Gabriel like to kill and so they killed the innocent just like that in front of our eyes. However, I didn't feel the slightest bit of remorse for Marco because he deserves it, he must be killed for a reason. He was an innocent person.

“Get upstairs right now!” I was startled when I heard a roar, specifically Nathan's. His dangerous glare left me frightened and suddenly, I could move my feet.

When I didn't make a move, he harshly grabbed my elbow and dragged me upstairs to the room, he pushed me in and locked the door behind him. My teeth clenched as I caressed the part he claws, it was sore and practically bruised.

“All this happened because of you, slut!” He seethed as he grabbed my jaw and penetrated his glare through me.

“Ever since that scoundrel boyfriend of yours died, things like this always occur!” He yelled, I continued to clench my jaw as I glared at him.
