Chapter 21: I Miss Him Everyday
Romano.
“I am fucking working on it and you know that! What we need right now is a fuckton of men so we can find whew the fucking bastard is. Those men can attack him.” I grunted through my frustrations as I stood up from my seat and walked to the window.
“What if I told you that we can do something about it?” Caleb said.
“Now is not the time to fuck around, Caleb.” I turned my attention away from the window and walked over to him with demanding glare.
“What is it?” Spill it out!”
His lips curved into a smirk when he walked away from me and sat himself on one of the chairs in front of my desk. My eyes traveled to him, following his footsteps as I was impatient on the inside. He really likes to test my patience.
I returned to my desk and leaned on the table as I glared at him for information.
“You know, it would be very helpful if you inform me about what we can do about this situation?” I retorted as I rested my arms across my chest.
“Oh, you want to know? You could have just asked.” He said, which made me clench my jaws and swear at him.
“I know that Gabriel would be visiting Mali to seal some business deals there. I still don't know when but I am working on it.” He said and I indicated for him to carry on.
“My point is that if he leaves Dubai, our assassination on him would be much easier, especially if it is in Mali. We can get it there and then clean, cut and run.” I nodded my head as realization settled upon me that he was right indeed.
Caleb in fact thought of a great idea so I stopped glaring at him and sat back on my chair comfortably.
“Wow, that is brilliant. Is not a bad idea.” I commented.
“Find out when he leaves for Mali, until then stay put and cautious. We just killed his bitch so the fucker will definitely look for us.”
Waiting for Gabriel to go to Mali was a great idea because Caleb was correct, killing him will only make matters worse. Also if we do it in Mali, it would catch him off guard which I prefer the most because he caught me off guard. He decided to fuck my life up at a time where I thought things were beginning to settle. Mali should be a trip that I am looking forward to now because I have been wauti for three years to do this. I put my sweat and tears into this just to make it go accordingly to plan only for Sophie.
“One more thing, Romano.” He interrupted my thoughts and I looked up at him, nodded my head.
“When we were disposing of Marco's body, we went through his phone and found a text message between him and Gabriel.” He informed me.
“Those text messages were not normal, they were in codes and we were able to detect in one of them, they were talking about Benjamin.”
My brows snapped in a furrow as I tried to comprehend what he was saying, this is impossible. I felt my ears burn up and the bloody rage just filled my body. Benjamin was the previous Don before me and my father, however, his work was all shit because he was a fucking fraud.
“Are you thinking what I am thinking?” He said while knocking me out of my thoughts again. I immediately shook my head as I tried to avoid the suspicion, I really had enough to deal with. I didn't need another on my plate.
“Benjamin?” I shook my head in refusal.
“I don't think he is involved with him in that way, he wouldn't be a traitor to us.”
“Well, you never know, Romano, people change behind our backs. Look what Marco did and look where he is now.”
As much as I didn't want our suspicions to be right, I had this strong feeling that it would be.
Sophie pov
My headache as I was sitting on the cold floor of the bathroom with my knees close to my chest while my arms curled around them. I winced when I felt every part of my body just twitch in pain due to all the torture Nathan set for r last night, all the nightmares came rushing down to me and it made my stomach drop because I knew at the top of my head that it was a daily occurrence and was never going to end. Even thinking about it made me feel very sick so I quickly ran to the sink and threw up.
I walked back to the room where Nathan was sleeping, I turned to bed and decided that I didn't want to go back to bed, I needed fresh air so I turned around and opened the door to the balcony. I knew where the keys were as I witnessed him hiding them. Even though I knew where the keys were and it was my only way to escape, I decided not to do anything yet because I couldn't leave without my mother. If I am leaving this place, my mother is coming with me. I stepped into the balcony and watched the dark sky as I began to count the stars that twinkle in it before my hands dug deep in my pocket and pulled out a piece of paper. I unfolded the paper with a heavy heart and gulped, every time I opened up that piece of paper, a drop of my tear landed on it because it was a picture of Romano. My heart reached all the way up to my throat as I choked back a sob. If only he was here, I wouldn't be where I am today.
“Why are you awake so early?” His voice broke through my peace and it made me clutch onto the picture and quickly shoved it back in my pocket. I gasped as the sleepy voice interrupted and when I turned around to see him, he stood there rubbing his eyes. I shook my head and gulped again before I trembled under his gaze.
“I needed fresh air…I am sorry, I shouldn't have.” I replied hesitantly and instantly expected a slap across my cheek or a yell but surprisingly enough, he did nothing except join me.
“Come here,” he said softly when he sat on the chair that swung.
He patted the seat right next to him as he encouraged me to join him. I was actually quite intimidated at the fact that he was behaving differently so I listened to him because I didn't want to anger him even more.
“Sophie?” He called, the tone of his voice suddenly appeared to me firm and threatening.
I walked towards the seat and sat next to him, trying to keep a distance as I tense my shoulders. He took my hand in his and began to stroke it before he placed a kiss on it.
“You are beautiful,” he said as he caressed my hand.
He complimented me all the time but I didn't really feel the palpitations I did when Romano used to compliment me. I didn't feel the butterflies at the bottom of my stomach like how I used to feel when Romano used to call me beautiful. Instead, it emotionally affects me even more because I feel very lonely. The only person I see every second of the day is Nathan and to be honest, I have grown sick and tired of him already.
“What are you thinking, darling?” He asked as he broke me out of my thoughts.
“Are you okay?” He stopped stroking my hand and watched me.
“Y..yes, I am fine.” I replied as he watched me again but this time, his brows lifted.
Silence filled us, I liked it because there was never silence with him, he either yelled, lays his hands on me or demands that I talk. I watched the sky again as I counted the stars, calming my nerves down because I was very nervous at how quickly his mood can change. One minute he will be caressing me, the next, he will he clawing at my skin.
“Sophie, I have been thinking that since our wedding is coming soon, how about we go shopping?” He suggested.
My heart dropped and my eyes popped out of their sockets. This was unbelievable, he never suggested an idea like this and for him to do that now made everything sound and feel so surreal. My blood pumped to my face as I felt it burn with excitement and a smile spread across my lips. Honestly, this was after years that he managed to make me smile and I was terrified because I knew it wasn't going to last long.
“I.. Nathan.. are you sure?” I asked, I was gobsmacked when my gaze pinned him as I began to look for the reason why he was being so generous.
I couldn't help but smile as I questioned him and dug deep through his expression. It was filled with kindness, something I haven't seen since three years ago
