Chapter 18: What Are You Afraid Of?
Romano
“Boss, we have a problem.”
Fuck, another fucking problem!
“What?” I asked
“Some of our men are found dead.” Kelvin, my adoptive brother informed me.
“What the fuck!” I cursed, my body shuddered with anger as I glared at Kelvin who stood at the doorway with his arms crossed against his chest. I just felt the burning desire to just kill someone right now because this was not how I planned all of it to go. If anything else happens, it will bring my mafia down which I feared most.
“Where? How?” I growled in frustration as I ran my fingers through my hair while I thought of an alternative. I can't have another set of the crew turning up dead at my front door.
He stepped into the room and closed the door behind him before he turned back around and approached me. I feel my anger just growing as I sense this calm demeanor from him and just glare at him. I wondered why the fúck he was so calm about all this? Once he reached me, he gave me a small smile and placed his hands on my shoulders and stared right through my eyes to calm me down.
“You need to calm down,” he said.
“Putting up with this tough act will not help you at all, it will only make things worse, Romano.”
“I really don't understand why a problem like this has highlighted your quietude when really you should be angry.” I growled.
“They killed our men, our fucking men!”
“I understand you but that is not a way to think before you retaliate. Calm down before you take drastic measures that could end up killing you or another of your own.”
I watched him as I soon began to feel my body just settled with composure, it was the least I could do. He is one of my brothers my father had adopted ever since he joined the family. He also joined the mafia because our name carried it all. In my eyes, he was no adoptive brother, he is my brother.
“Where has all this occured?” I asked.
“Just give me the damn location, Kelvin!”
“The attack happened at one of your clubs.” He replied.
“Okay, details, Kelvin. Which one?’ I clapped my hands as I urged him.
“This private one m, the one you often visit.” He replied as he rolled his eyes and walked away from me, from my failure to understand him.
I sensed his frustration right away and hated the feeling of just being guilt tripped but I have to fight back whether he or no one for a matter of fact dislikes it. I knew from the very beginning that this day would come, I suspected that some motherfucker would have the balls to challenge me and I was prepared for all the shit that was coming my way. His quiet growl knocked me out of my thoughts and I immediately looked at him. He rubbed his chin as the other hand rested on his hip while it seemed like he was thinking of something to help the situation.
“Before you do anything, I want you to think about the consequences of your actions. If you go down there now, you will end up dead.” He reasoned with me.
“Do you take me as a fucking fool, Kelvin? What are you exactly trying to point out, that I am weak?” I snapped at him which made him very angry as he walked over to me. He was so close, I was able to detect his anger with the furious convulsions his body was experiencing.
“I don't give a shit about what you would like if you don't retaliate.” He seethed before he gripped the back of my neck with one of his hands and pulled me even closer. His eyes pinned mine as they were filled with rage.
“The point is that they are here to kill you, Romano. Are you fucking dense? For the fuck sake, open your damn eyes!”
I pulled away from his hold and instead, gripped his neck back and I applied a little pressure on it. He inhaled a breath as he fought with me a little.
“I may be crazy but I am not stupid, Kelvin. Situations like this should be solved in a matter of ten minutes, so why the fuck do we need to negotiate when we all know that these motherfucker are actually the dense ones for entering one of my properties?” I growled as I glared at him who managed to push me away from him.
“They killed our men so that they can finish you up.” He said.
“And I get that you got it all under control with your weapons and…”
“Then what are you afraid of?” I cut him off.
“It is just…it is just that last time it happened, we lost her.” He said.
My body felt like it froze in its spot as my back immediately straightened. My stomach dropped when I was reminded of what he was speaking about. I teared my eyes away from him and looked at the window as I endeavored to control my nerves. I had so many years to learn how to deal with it, today wasn't going to be a day where I failed.
“I..I am sorry, Romano. I shouldn't have.” He sighed nonchalantly as he placed a hand on my shoulder and embraced me before pulling away.
“Just be careful with what you do, you are the last person to fuck this up. I really don't want to attend a funeral.” He gave me a stern look and I just gave him a firm nod before I smacked his shoulder.
“Get the car ready, will you?” I said as I walked away from him and gulped the huge knot formed in my throat.
“While you are at it, inform the boys about it, I will need my family to help with this one.” I said before I heard him chuckling.
“You got it, boss. Right on it.” He chuckled before he jogged out of the room.
I stared at the door as I watched him leave and just thought about what he said when his words just repeated in my head like an echo. I clenched my fists when I looked away before I walked to the window and look at the fucking sky. I fucking hated everything and all this began when I lost her that day, Sophie. The only woman who I fell in love with passed on and it kills me every time I heard the circumstances of her death because I couldn't do anything or be there to save her. It was all my fault and I was going to spend the rest of my life knowing that Sophie died all because of me.
I blinked a couple of times as I felt a tear escaping my eyes. I shook the thought off and wiped my face before I turned to the table to grab my guns I would be using to kill every one of those idiots who dared to step into my club. I shoved them into my pocket before I turned towards the door and left to obviously cause havoc.
We reached the club after some time and right now, I was standing in front of my private property with my men right behind me. All our guns were ready to shoot but the only problem was that we had no idea where in the club these men were. According to Kelvin, there was men flooding the place so it was difficult for him to track which one was ours. I instructed the boys that before we step in, we should hide our guns and spread out so nothing looks suspicious. Few of my men entered first before I did and as soon I was in, my nose was filled with the metallic smell is blood. I clenched my jaw as I roam my eyes around the place, nothing was touched. It was quiet here, only women roaming around the place with their boobs and exposed pussy to see who would be interested but no one in particular. I stood at the center with an eager eye before I caught someone waving their hands from the corner of my eyes just to get my attention. I turned my gaze towards it and see Kelvin gesturing for me to come upstairs and when I reached, he placed a hand against his hips before he proceeds to walk up the stairs.
I stopped him from going on further before I took over, walking in front of him. This is my fight, I brought this fight on so I couldn't let him be the first one to get hurt. In fact, I would be damned. My jaws clenched with anger when we reached the top to find the dead bodies of my men. They were scattered all around the hall and when my eyes bounces to each and every one of them, my eyes met with the culprit who stood at the end of the hall.
