Chapter 17: I Am Totally Defeated

Sophie

“I..I am sorry, Gab…father. I am fine.” I gulped before I pulled away from him and looked away.

“Sophie?” Gabriel called with a stern voice that nearly made me jump. I glanced up at him as I gulped again.

“Your mother has something to say to you, she is waiting for you in her room. Please visit her.” He muttered.

My body tense at his choice of words because deep down, I knew that whatever mother has got to say to me was not from herself but him. He made my mother tell me what will be happening to avoid any refusal.

“Is..is she okay?” I asked frantically and he nodded his head. He placed his hand on my shoulder.

“Of course, dear. Come along with me, I will take you to her. She is perfectly fine.” He said as he pulled me towards the door.

However, when he reached the door, he stopped and then turned around again to speak to me.

“Listen attentively to what your mother had to say and don't let me down because I will seriously hate to take what you have now?”

What do I have now? I have nothing to be quite frank, I really care what he threatens me with as long as it does not involve my mother. We walked down the main hallway that led straight into his room. As I walked through, I glanced at the other halls that would lead us to the other side of the house, each of them had Nathan's men guarding it as they kept cautious of everything. Ever since Nathan entered our house, his man had swarmed the place and I hated it because it was not like at all before. It was much better than this and it was like home, not like prison. Once we reached his room, my stomach turned. I was not ready to see the state my mother was in because it would break me that I couldn't do anything about it. I was terrified to see how she was when he opened the door and stepped in before I followed behind him. And once I was in, my eyes widened with relief when a small smile settled on my lips. The sight shocked me because for the first time in years, my mother looked well and healthy. I loved her so much and I couldn't live without her. I still believe that my mother is the most beautiful woman on earth and no one could beat it.

She sensed my presence was in the room, her head shop up before her gaze pinned me. For a second, it was soft and serene before it was clouded with sadness that I couldn't figure out. A warm smile spread across her beautiful face but soon faded when Gabriel spoke.

“Maria?” He said with a firm voice, I glanced over my shoulder to see him giving her a nod.

It was as if he was approving something for her to do. My mother hesitantly nodded her head at him before she returned her gaze back to me with that warming smile which was the only thing that got me through the days of enduring torture.

“Sit down, sweetie.” She said softly with a smile on her face.

She patted the seat that was next to her and gestured for me to sit down. I sat next to her as she was on the chair next to me, opposite Gabriel. He watched me eagerly as he switched his gaze between me and my mother. Like as if he was waiting very impatiently for something to happen.

“Would you please tell her, I don't have all day, Maria. He said in a curt manner, however a smile was painted on his lips.

“Have patience, Gabriel.” My mother replied with a gentle tone of voice unlike his.

I watched the two look at each other, Gabriel seemed like he was going to kill her while my mother watched him with sadness and hesitation. On a normal day, he would not take my mother's words into consideration, he would also treat her like crap but today, it was different.

“Sweetheart?” She called as she cupped my in her soft hand.

I looked down into her eyes as I searched for something. Her brows furrowed a little as a small frown ran past her lips, her eyes began to water with tears as she caressed her thump on my cheek. Right there and then, I knew whatever she was about to say wasn't her choice. She was foreshadowing something and I was trying to mentally prepare myself because I felt as though it would be something that stabbed me directly to the heart.

“Since it has been years, your father thinks it is best to move a step. T..take things forward.” She said as she nodded her head at me.

“W..what…what do you mean?” I asked as I watched her face before my gaze shifted into Gabriel's who just stared at me with a blank expression. I returned my gaze back to her as she began to shake.

“Your wedding with Nathan will be in two weeks.” She revealer and I could see the physical impact the words had on her.

She exhaled out a very shaky breath and closed her eyes before a tear ran down her eyes. Her breath snook as it felt like she was going to burst any moment now but I remained silent as I stared at her with wide eyes. My chest tightened as I realized that the day had finally come. Though I knew this day was to come, the news still seemed like a bombshell to me because I was not ready at all. I was going to get married to a vile man in two weeks and there was nothing I could do about it.

“F.. father?” I called with a shaky voice as I was pulled out of my reverie.

“F..father..I..you can't do that.” I faltered as I bounced my gaze between my mother and Gabriel.

“F..father please don't do this. Mother?” I pinned my eyes on her for response and finally broke down. Her hand was trembling as they held mine tightly and she watched me in sorrow before she shook her head in defeat.

“I can and I will do just that, Sophie.” He interrupted us with that same firm voice. I turned my gaze back at him to see him glaring at me.

“I have repeated myself many times over the years but you still seem to fall victim to such gullibility. If you remembered, Sophie, you have no choice in this. You will be marrying him in two and that is final.”

“Father, I beg you, please don't make this happen.” I pleaded with a defeated voice as I went down on my knees and begged him as if I was begging for my life. I looked up at him and just sobbed but all he ever did was pick me up and press my arms with his hands.

“You are going to marry Nathan in two weeks, darling and that is final.” He said.

“Don't make this harder than it already is, accept this alliance already because there is no way out of it.” I shook my head and continue to sob,

At this point I was shaking and he saw this as an opportunity to just manipulate me like he always does.

“Father, I will never accept this alliance or whatever you call this.” I said.

“He will never be the person to love me like how I would want. He is a monster and you know that.”

“Fuck, Sophie. It has been three years, when are you ever going to learn that Romano is dead?” He stressed out as he scratched his temple.

“You ought to move on or things will be bad for you.”

Isn't it bad already? My heart shattered into a million pieces as he reminded me again but the only reason why I felt more pain this time was because I saw no way out of this marriage. I am going to marry Nathan and there was no one to stop it.

Not even Romano because he was long gone and that crushed my heart over and over again. I am totally defeated.
